We have the 2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee L in the studio this week - a three-row version of the brand new "WL" generation SUV. It's a major overhaul, but does it still have the off-road chops Grand Cherokee is known for? Andre finds out by taking it off-road against Tommy in the Land Rover Defender.

My experience I agree with the previous comment, only use the extended height if you need to. The cool thing about the Defenders air suspension is that even ground out in extended height, press the button to lower the suspension and it will go into super extended height, then if you put your foot on the brake and press the raise button for 3 seconds it will beep and go even higher, granted it will be stiff but it can get you out of trouble. As for HDC I tend to put it into manual and use the gears to slow down or speed up going down steep slopes it also saves your brakes. And to smooth out your progress and reduce jerky throttle use ATPC and use the cruise control button to adjust your speed, it really is a capable off roader.

Yes, but even in just the normal off road height mode rather than fully extended, it is surprisingly how less comfortable the ride is compared to live axles over slow technical terrain. At higher speeds on unpaved roads and normal road height it is comfy. But too much lifting of wheels for a good ride when the going gets tough.
@jerrymyahzcat

Yes I’ve said that again and again. I do believe however that the vehicle puts itself in off-road height when put into low range. They could change it back to normal height but then again they don’t need to be using low range anyway.

The Defender is very nice but a potential HUGE money pit as the miles rack up. With the Jeep, a super nice and capable vehicle for a little less money with a aftermarket option list that's second to none. The Defender, no matter how capable it is, when you need parts you better be able to wait and get your checkbook ready because you're going to pay through the nose for service and parts. Gotta go with the Jeep, hands down!

On road the Defender has better road holding and steering at least for European fast contry roads, but I definitively would like to have diff locks. I do not like the poor wheel travel in the GC. Yes, the Defender is more expensive but has an incredible choice of useful extras. Defender reliability will improve with time. already owning 2 grand Cherokees (HIS 95 HERS 06), our main need would be the larger 3rd row, the L is for sure an amazing machine for sure, me however i love the 110 my only hang up is the front end, for me i can see me smashing that shinny front on snow and rocks wheeling in the winter.....my vote is for a "cant go wrong with either". heres to one day meeting you on the trails..

So question for the TFL team! I am in the market for a new off road vehicle. I have a reservation for the new Ford Bronco First Edition 4door and awaiting a build date any day. My question is, for around the $63k mark am I better off staying with the Bronco FE or would you buy a Defender spec’d up exactly like yours or the new Jeep Grand Cherokee L.. I have three kids but have a Honda Odyssey to move them around normally. I want something to use the trails here in SoCal and some overlanding adventures. Feel free to reach out to me, I’d be happy to help out with any videos/comparisons with the Bronco in the future as well !

I like the defender better but living in Salida Co where the nearest dealer is two hours away is a challenge. The Jeep is too nice. I do like that I can get it serviced five minutes from home and I like the v8. Considering my brand new Power Wagon’s transmission went out at 30,000 miles and my wife’s grand Cherokee’s transmission had a very odd surging sensation that the dealer could not fix at 28,000 miles…. I would buy the defender.

It will drive like something from the 1980's but with more power and hopefully a bit more refinement. They have just launched a video showing the interior which suits utility companies and farmers very well. Their claim about reducing electronics is laughable though with their only example being the lack of electric seats and keyless entry. Its not as if all that switchgear on the roof and down the centre console was connected to their components by levers and Bowden cables. They are all obviously connected by electronics and cables, hopefully using a modern Bus system rather than miles and miles of individual wires prone to chaffing and being eaten by rodents.
