In the original Flash Gordan story's Ming seem to only enjoy playing with Flash like , and Cat with a Mouse , knowing he could kill Flash at anytime . It was like a game of chess to Ming , something to keep him from being board .

Melting the Polar Caps was a good plan from Ming but there is a flaw. Shouldn't care a bit more for his own Ice Station Earth since the thing is build on one of the targeted areas?

He piloted a helicopter in this very episode. That's not something people are born doing: it's a delicate instrument, and much training required. The "quirk superpower" thing is a more recent fictional phenomenon. Mandrake is quite literally a magician to use such magic.
