Sunshine changes its levels between shines more than any other mainline game. Leaving the level after getting a shine was a technical limitation caused by the need completely reload the map with changes. The haunted hotel in the beach, the fire goop in pianta village. Could not have been done without leaving after the shine.

That’s what I said lol. It’s a shame they didn’t mention that especially in a video titled defending Super Mario Sunshine.

Sure this game has its flaws, but in my opinion, the controls are better than 64’s simply for having so many more movement options. (Outside of not having the F.L.U.D.D.) I wouldn’t say it’s as good as 64, but it’s near neck and neck 3:59 Also you can see the blue coin totals within the levels by pressing the Z button

Sunshine is WONDERFUL! Never knew it needed to be defended in the first place. It's also a godsend for mental health because of how bright and luscious the levels are along with the happy go lucky music. If people spent more time playing and being immersed in these environments rather than hating on something cause it's not traditional Mario, i'm sure they'd find more happiness in their own lives. Sunshine was my favorite game in the series for the longest time UNTIL Odyssey.

Gamecubegalaxy complains about the controls, but really was just complaining about the physics. Never once did he mention being unable to maneuver Mario due to controls or missing because of them. They just don't like the funky physics, which is true for some levels but I feel is overblown.

There's nothing wrong with Super Mario Sunshine. Just because it plays differently than Super Mario 64 doesn't mean that SMS has to follow with very similar controls. Certain familiar enemies that look different (Boo's for example) because that's what they look like on Isle Delphino, not in the Mushroom Kingdom.

@michaels49172 ай бұрын
I like Sunshine a lot it and I think the "it's not good" discourse comes from the fact that it's sandwiched between 64 and Galaxy two titans of the series. Sunshine needed some more time in the oven however seeing where Nintendo was at the time I get why parts of development were rushed. Now, as someone who grew up on 64, I loved in that game, I could, for the most part, grab any star I wanted, and the game would let me no matter the mission. In Sunshine, though, I see what Nintendo was doing and why it wouldn't work. Each level had its own standalone story, and if you could Shine Sprite 8 before doing 1, you'll miss the story. Fluddless levels, I thought Mario controlled fine enough, but that's just me. I actually like being forced to get through the obstacle courses without Fludd. What I'm not a fan of is the 100 coin Shine Sprit kicking you out of the level after collecting it, while in 64, you could grab the coin star and a mission star. I'll add my voice to the blue coins being way to cryptic for their own good and having no in-game way of tracking what you got or which coins are exclusive to certain episodes just screams "buy the players guide" to me.

Sunshine makes an excellent summer game. It's that tropical atmosphere that immerses you into that summer vacation that you never had. That's some of the greatness of some of these titles during this period. Sunshine, Wind Waker, Pokemon Emerald. They give you that summer-esque atmosphere that makes you want to mainly reserve playing (and re-playing) those games over the season!

Good video! I don't hate Sunshine at all, but it is probably one of my least favorite Mario games. Yes, it is a good game overall, but it felt like it was rushed and could have used more polish. I've 100% completed it once back when it released and that was plenty. There just seem to be more tedious and frustrating aspects of this game than many other 3D platformers I've played. Though, I will give kudos to Nintendo since the GameCube era really had them experiment with lots of ideas. The GameCube has a lot of weird and wonderful games that grew into proper franchises like Luigi's Mansion and Pikmin. Heck, even Double Dash!! is like the black sheep in the Mario Kart series!

I hated this game... For me, everything good about the gameplay in SM64 was terrible in Sunshine. Glad you enjoyed it though.
@MintyFries2 ай бұрын
I have an immensely difficult time deciding which I like better, 64 or Sunshine. Ultimately I lean toward 64, I think because its primitive nature gives it a mystique that makes it more memorable, its replay value is slightly higher as it's a more straightforward experience, and it has the BLJ. Sunshine comes so close with its crisp controls, beautifully rendered locales that transcend the era it's from, and memorable characters and levels. Where 64 has some levels I don't care too much to return to, Sunshine knocks it out of the park with every level from Gelato Beach to Bianca Hills to Pinna Park, etc. And its soundtrack is like 1000 times better than 64's. On top of that, I don't mind its flaws nearly as much as others seem to. But still I would say I overall like 64 better.

@Phillylove1002 ай бұрын
8:14-8:54 Yeah but there’s a purpose behind it. They change up the levels and the objectives to justify having a set order to doing things. Pianta village is the prime example of this. There are tons of unique and interesting missions that couldn’t all be present at once and function right.

Good video mate!!🏆 I like Super Mario Sunshine and Super Mario 64 more than Super Mario Galaxy!! Super Mario Galaxy for whatever reason, I don't find as interesting, don't know why. Maybe it's because I don't find outer space interesting in general, maybe that's why? I enjoy Super Mario Galaxy as well, definitely, just not as much as SM64 or SMS. I have 100% completed SM64 multiple times, 100% completed SMS two times including all blue coins two times and 100% completed SMG as Mario and Luigi back in 2008. For me, the blue coins would be okay IF you didn't basically need a strategy guide to find some of the most random blue coins ever that players just have no clue how to get. That's my issue with blue coins, not that there's too many of them. Also, I discovered a problem where you can mess up your save file making it impossible to 100% complete acquiring 120 Shine Sprites without needing to erase your save file if you return fruit to the Piantas in Delfino Plaza, be awarded a blue coin, save without picking up the blue coin awarded by the Piantas and NOT acquiring it and turning off the game! Not sure if this definitely messes up getting 100% blue coins as I saw someone do this years ago and never tested it myself. Might have assumed it messes up getting 100% after seeing the action performed by someone else, didn't test it myself but applied logic to this 100% shine get killer. Also, in Bianco Hills you can skip Episode one and complete Episode two in Episode one when doing any% completion which I think I thought of myself and tried out successfully for fun years ago as a any% completion. You CAN skip the first episode of Bianco Hills for any% completion, kinda neat, the game ONLY cares about episode 7 in each level/area! Cool video mate!! So awesome to watch your content dedicated to some of the very best games in existence while you make the videos great and high quality like the games themselves too, great work!!🏆😎👍🏻

Well the way I format these videos is a little different. First a brief history, then I do a community poll across my socials and kind of pull likes and dislikes and highlight the top gripes about the game, and then splash in a little of my opinions either good or bad with those complaints. These tend to be the longer part of the video because I go through a lot of comments and people tend to highlight the negative more. Then I put the positives of the game. I could make the videos longer, but personally 10-20 minutes is all I would want to watch. I try to condense them down. I think too many people on KZbin make super long videos. I just summarize what I like quickly.

Lmao I paused the video at 0:39 to respond to a text and when I unpaused the vid I was like “wth happened to jiggylookback’s voice?!” I was so confused 😹😹 Ya I know this is an unpopular opinion but Sunshine is my favourite 3D Mario game! It really became so when I replayed them in the 3D All Stars pack some years back.. and it’s almost entirely for the controls and how expressive Mario feels to move around the levels. The controls are so tight and it feels like you can always reach areas that seem out of reach with some smart chaining of his moves. When I was replaying the games through the 3D All Stars pack I was doing them in order and going to Galaxy right after Sunshine just felt so terrible with how stiff the controls felt. I had to literally take a break and play something else Kuz I really didn’t enjoy jumping into Galaxy with how it felt to control right after playing Sunshine. I know the game is severely unfinished, as a lot of first party games were during the GameCube years, Wind Waker being another clearly unfinished game (and I have my theory as to why… Rare filling in so much of the release schedule during the N64 years with at minimum 2 games per year weren’t there anymore so my theory is that’s why they were having to rush games out more for the GameCube) but even tho it’s unfinished I just love the way the game plays for what we got. Not to mention the coherent unified game world and themes, the music, GOD DANG YOSHI!!! (Probably a reason my fave 2D Mario is also Super Mario World it’s one of the only Mario games to share those qualities of having a coherent unified thematic world, etc).. I even love the blue coins! As someone who’s always loved exploration as my fave thing in video games, the blue coins adds a fun smaller dopamine burst reward for exploration between the shines. Tho I will say the game not having a proper level by level check list for which blue coins are still uncollected in which level episodes does make them a bit of a pain in the arse to 100%. But ya… I can go on for ages… but Sunshine manifesto aside, lol, I just love the game so much! ☀️💧🔫🐬🖤 Great vid as always, Jiggy!

It didn't feel like you were defending Mario Sunshine very much... Games like Mario Galaxy are so easy and over simplified, and the worlds are all so small and bland. A small child could 100% Galaxy in a few days. The difficulty, the theme, and the size of Mario Sunshine was infinitely better than either Galaxy or it's DLC, I mean sequel. I loved the challenge of finding blue coins. I loved the massive worlds and searching through all their detail and secrets to find them. The controls of Mario Sunshine are infinitely better than Galaxy because I'm not waggling around a wii-mote while using a single joystick to move. There is no argument to be made. The ENTIRE challenge of platformers is meant to be platforming, not collecting. If we have an acrobatic device introduced to Mario to makes segments easier, you can become used to the training wheels. Just because there is occasionally more challenge in a game, we don't need to fall back to an orbit camera and make all the worlds spheres, so camera control isn't even an issue. That's a cop out and frankly, way too easy. Mario Sunshine was way better than Galaxy. You might not like mission structure in some levels of Sunshine, but at least every mission was in a thematic world. Contrast that to Galaxy where almost every mission was a different world, with no continuity or connecting theme. It's not a world that evolves based on the mission it's literally just disparate worlds loosely threaded together in a chain of quests. You could shuffle them around and mix "worlds" together than no one would have noticed. That is far worse level design. The fact you could "beat" Mario 64 without even seeing every level, meant many people missed out on interesting worlds entirely, some were well hidden and some required some interesting puzzle solving to even find. Mario Sunshine made sure that to beat the game you have to at least beat something in every level. That is excellent game design and the only way you can truly argue that you beat the game. Mario Galaxy and it's sequel that no one asked for was clearly the most divisive game in the series, with a complete departure from difficulty, large open and interesting worlds to explore, consistent world themes, and controls. It took Nintendo 10 YEARS to finally come back to the old (better) Mario formula and make Mario Odyssey.

As someone who has a strong dislike for this game and the idea that it’s some hidden gem, here are my points ahead of time. Having to do mission 7 in every world to reach Bowser makes for a butchered journey that strips all freedom from the experience and renders the more open design pointless. It also makes repeat playthroughs far less fun overall. The lack of a 100% incentive also contributes to this. On top of that, there’s less content than its predecessor, it’s less polished than a game released in 1996, the movement is too jittery and yet the game expects you to deal with extremely punishing “secret” missions at a really high rate, Yoshi can’t swim and has a timer, Bowser Junior is wasted in his first appearance because there’s so much that could’ve been done with Shadow Mario besides “Bowser did it!” And this last one’s more personal, I prefer a varying sense of surrealism over a more relaxed connected world in my Mario. I prefer 3 to World, for example. Then you have the little moments that add up, like being able to lose a life after getting the red coins in that Blooper surfing mission or random stuff in Noki Bay sending you flying into the poison water. Yoshi being able to get trapped in the yellow blockage on pipes, etc.

If you want a Mario 64 sequel on the GameCube, SpongeBob Battle for Bikini Bottom is legit a better entry in the 3D collectathon genre. Smoked by a third party, good job, Sunshine

@robertlauncher not even close, but good try. SpongeBob BfBB is still a decent platformer.

I feel like Nintendo dropped the ball on 3D platformers that gen, this and Wario World were it, others made them, but then the 7th gen comes around and it's almost a dead genre, which is why 7th gen isn't my favorite.

Why is this guest on your video. He clearly hates the game.

He’s a great GameCube focused channel. I wouldn’t say he hates the game. Sometimes having a critical look at something can come across as negative, but I mean it’s not a perfect game. We both say at the end it’s a good game.

As Jiggy said in his reply, I don’t “hate” this game. I have no problem pointing out its faults, as it has several as stated by both of us, but I also have fond memories playing it. 👍
