it's most likely to do with being able to differentiate the characters visually; Mario is already represented by the color red, so making a playable Toad in a multiplayer campaign also red might cause confusion or a lack of visual flair

Actually, the Toads *are* in NSMB DS but only in the cutscene where peach is stolen. They’re represented as clumps of pixels in the background running around frantically.

Those Toads technically use the Toadsworth model since they’re too small to actually see and there is no regular Toad model in the game. I think they still count though since they’re obviously meant to represent normal Toads. Toads also appear in various minigames, like the slingshot ones where they run back and forth, and the gambling ones where a waiter Toad is serving drinks.

Who are these people allegedly citing Gen 1 Legendary or Mythicals as story relevant? It’s only with the benefit of hindsight it’s even vaguely hinted Rocket wants Mewtwo, and even then Cerulean Cave is postgame. Mewtwo is my favorite legendary by miles and has an amazing story but that story was basically not there in Gen 1 other than “it exists”. The birbs don’t even have a story I don’t even know why they’re legendary to begin with.

in super Mario odyssey, the captain toad is pretty helpful giving moons but having a disadvantage of having to find him and the blue toad also gives you a hint for 50 coins so i think i would be in pretty helpful

Unlike most characters, the caveat is judging multiple individuals as one: "Toad", Blue Toad, Yellow Toad, Red Toad, Toadette, Toadsworth, Captain Toad, and many others. Of course, it still makes a lot of sense to group them together, as the specific ones listed only appear in some of the games.

Where do you rank the toads in Super Smash Bros Melee and the rest of the Smash Bros games? They're a useful shield for Peach, but they only pop up for a second and reflect projectiles by vomitting (I think it's vomit). It's a good shield, but only Peach and Kirby can use it.
