To add to the joke about the Toad at the beginning being the only Toad you see in the game: My personal headcannon is that that Toad wasn’t a Toad at all. I believe that it was Mimi disguised as a Toad, and that she told the Mario Bros. about Peach having been kidnapped in order to lure them to Bowser’s castle. The story still makes sense if that isn’t the case, but I think it’s a pretty funny headcannon anyway, since it being true implies there were no Toads in the game at all.
@ninjaydes7 ай бұрын
Had the same thought on my second playthrough. SPM is a lore heavy game, so Mimi disguising as the Toad wouldn't have been too big of a stretch. Even better, Dimentio wanted to create new worlds and got his wish with Sticker Star. The new Paper Mario games are an alternate reality in which Dimentio won.

Honestly, I wouldn't be mad about the more action adventure-oriented direction modern Paper Mario has been taking if turn-based battles were gone entirely, because in those games their only purpose is to slow you down. The devs even said as much, stating that battles function more like hurdles than the central mechanic (paraphrasing).

I got this game, and proceeded to go through the intro to Flipside. I then was asked with if I'll accept the quest. Surely they'd have a 'but thou must' loop, right? Let's see what the clever--- wait, it accepted it? More pleading? Well, ok, select no, let's see what--- another new thing? How many times can I say no before it loops? No, no... "Then surely all worlds are doomed..." GAME OVER. From that point on the game hooked me with the writing. Any game that put an obvious choice like that, and wasn't afraid to stick to it MUST have great writing. It did. I'm glad I stuck with it... it might not be the best in terms of gameplay to me, but in writing and characterization it beats all, even the first two, hands down.

It’s amazing how many little details people miss about this game, my favorite one is that returning to older chapters after starting a new world will have the NPCs say different things. Another cool detail is that you can measure each world’s proximity to the others by how big the void is in the sky. IIRC the Bitlands doesn’t even have the void visible until like the last chapter of the game and even then, it looks super small.

For anyone who sees this and wants to play a slightly more difficult/balanced Super Paper Mario. Put these AR codes into the original version of the game (Not Rev1 or Rev2). This will lock your Max HP to 20 and Attack to 4 for the entire game and makes it just a bit more fun to play considering you don't kill everything in 2 hits anymore and have to actually try to dodge bosses like King Croacous and Bonechill. It isn't much of a hard mode but it's easy to get working and has sparked my enjoyment for the game once again because it feels somewhat better not having most boss fights end in like 4 hits from Bowser. 044cea40 00000000 044cea2c 00000005 044cea30 00000004 044cea38 00000014 Edit: Just a fair warning: The Endgame Bosses (Mainly Chapter 7) become INCREDIBLY difficult due to them dealing 4-6 damage per hit (You only have 20 max health). Make sure to pack lots of defense increasing + Healing items rather than attack increasing ones!

Very well detailed video! I rarely see people cover every single aspect of the game. There are only a few things I don’t fully agree with. Items, specifically healing items, feel more valuable than previous games. Super Paper Mario only gives you one-time use mushrooms, mainly just before bosses. If you run low on HP, you have to use items since the only Inn in the game is located in Flipside. In older games, there are Inns and recovery blocks all over the place that give you infinite healing. If you do run low on HP, you can simply use a Star instead of items. I only used healing items on a few bosses because it was my first time playing and I had bad luck. I didn’t use any attack items either, I just sold them to buy better stuff. I think it’s pretty easy to beat both games with no items if you know what’s coming up. The next aspect was difficulty. While some enemies/bosses could have higher stats, you can’t really expect this game to be as difficult as any of the other Paper Mario games. The combat in those games is turn based; You always deal damage but you’re also required to take damage every turn. Super Paper Mario is real time, so the damage you deal/take is dependent a lot more on skill. Still, I was able to beat almost all enemies/bosses in the first two games with basic attacks. As long as you don’t constantly skip battles, you will have enough health to tank the hits without using items/FP moves. I think people overemphasize the difficulty because they’re Mario games. When compared to most other turn based RPGs, they’re pretty basic/easy. Overall, I find it hard to say if the gameplay is better or worse than other Paper Mario games due to the big changes. Most of the issues are less with the game and more with the genre in my opinion. Still, I would like to see a port of this game to the Switch, maybe even with some bonus content!

After finishing this video I decided to replay the original Paper Mario and you're completely right there are a lot of free heals and Inns in this game. A lot more than I remembered. Thank you so much for commenting and giving some genuinely very solid points I really appreciate it.

As someone whose favorite Paper Mario changes between the first three depending entirely on what vibe I’m feeling, it’s so nice to see SPM get some in depth attention. Paper Mario is one of the games I have the earliest memories of, and I especially remember playing it with my elder brother so there’s fond nostalgia there galore (plus admittedly I love how it looks despite its age). Likewise, TTYD is so polished and has the cleanest style that blends the paper aesthetic in the best without looking super ugly and unfinished. Plus, the party members were so fun and added so much charm and replayability to me, and it’s the first game I beat with my best friend. SPM is so different than these two, in that the story and epic nature of it all engaged me in a way the stories of the previous two did not. I didn’t care for the gameplay, but it was easy enough for me to breeze through to get to the next intriguing story beat or funny character interaction, so it was fine. The baddies are some of the best in the entire franchise, and I Adore Tippi. I won’t be the type to say the other games in the series are objectively good or bad, as it’s all subjective despite my preferences. I abandoned Sticker Star early, didn’t play Color Splash, and left Origami King behind after the style was so blindingly white and ugly in the earlier levels and toad town that I couldn’t play it despite the other portions I enjoyed due to how much it hurt my head. Regardless, even if they’re not for me, each game in the series is someone’s favorite, despite any flaws, and I think that’s good no matter what.

Fantastic video! I love how you go over each level in detail, I enjoyed every single minute of it. I played this game originally back when it came out in 2007, and just like you it was my very first 2D mario game. I didn't understand English well enough and didn't get a lot of the puzzles or character writing nuances but it was easy enough for me to enjoy it to completion. It gave an unrealistic expectation of story and lore in Mario games lol. 14 years later the algorithm suddenly started suggesting video essays to me about how deep and dark this game is. So I replayed it and had so much more fun, I was able to fully appreciate the humorous writing, the character depth, the story and pretty much made sure to replay it every holiday season since. And with every playthrough I learn new lore, do a different route with optional quests, etc, and it's such a lovely experience. I learned a lot of interesting new things about this game from your video and can't wait to see them for myself in the next playthrough season.

Edit: I think the irony of the pit of 100 trials is that dashell makes you go faster, but you probably don't save enough time with it throughout the whole game to compensate for the amount of time you spent transitioning through 100 screens and fighting the boss. ESPECIALLY if you fail some attempts.

alright ive finished this video. major props to you btw for creating a 5 and a half hour video for a game that does not have a large fanbase lol. this was also the first 2d mario game i played (the only other impressions i had were super mario world and SNES mario kart/wii mario kart), so i immediately attached onto it as well. i feel like no one appreciates the characters and the story enough, especially since this is probably one of the most well thought out and in depth storylines in a nintendo game. i love the inclusion of the story between tippi and bleck and how the rest of bleck's crew fit in with his quest in destroying all the worlds. i also love how a lot of the enemies are not just the typical goomba/koopa variants, and all have their own unique places and worlds. it makes me very sad that this game is not respected as much as the other paper mario games (and sad that it won't ever be ported to switch and future consoles but that's a different story), but any piece of media i can find is like a hidden gem. so THANK YOU for making this video, i really enjoyed it and it gave me a nice long video to listen to while i play another game!!! :)

I liked this game even back then and never stopped. I do not get why some people dislike this game, because I consider the finale of the OG Paper Mario trilogy (if you pay attention in the beginning at Mario's house, pictures of Paper Mario and TTYD are there and numerous cards make reference to previous partners). -You have OG Paper Mario which introduces the concept and executes its basic plot of Mario in an rpg getting seven things to defeat a big bad and a story being told through that very well -You have TTYD which applies that basic concept of the first game to a world more fleshed out and lived in, deeper lore with the Crystal Stars and a ruined town, playing around with a lot of formula in fun and cool ways and of course better characters -finally you have Super Paper Mario which goes into other dimensions and examines how love in every part peoples lives, how it can be good, how it can be twisted to be something bad, there are numerous examples but the Pure Hearts and the Chaos Heart is the most obvious ones: the Chaos Heart is born of a twisted expression one-sided expression of love, while the Pure Hearts are refilled twice through expressions of actual love. And of course, the true villain of it all is Dimentio, someone who only loves himself, consistently creating illusory copies of himself and wanting to remake all worlds in his image while using everyone else as tools and discarding them. a game braver than most, showing with the Sammer Kingdom how terrifying the destruction of a world would really be-and what the aftermath looks like in chilling simplicity. and in general....it just handles an end of the world plot far better than most, most just throw it out like an afterthought, but this game emphasizes the fear and sheer immensity of it approaching, constantly reminding you of it approaching with the void in the sky being this ticking clock like the moon of termina. But also one showing love's power in a better form than most- despite the way it takes away the villains invincibility, love of the pure hearts never fires a big beam that just....destroys the enemy. it gives you a fighting chance but you still need to FIGHT, and its true use is to restore everything at the end showing that its real power is to heal. and yeah, nice hear you defend it, but I think more people like it than some think- I've seen other youtubers say good things about it. I think the people who vocally hate it are a bit too loud and its nice hear to see more people recognize SPM as good, it truly belongs in the same category as Paper Mario and TTYD in my opinion.

Did this game need defending? I played it when it came out, never played ANY previous Paper Mario... I loved it then and have been standing up for it and recommending it highly ever since!!!

I watch long form videos everyday. Just want to say your way of talking and editing is super entertaining. I've never played a Mario game, but I loved listening to your passion. I hope your channel is successful!

Everyone's always saying that they want a new Paper Mario like the original two. I would prefer a sequel to Super that's an upgrade to it like TTYD was to the original. Would absolutely not complain about a new one like the originals though

Had this video in a playlist for a very very long while and I've just finished watching it entirely And oh man I can't help but heavily agree with what you've said at the end. I also grew up with a wii and super paper mario was also one my first mario games, I also struggled with galaxy due to the gameplay, to the point my heart was literally racing when I beat the 1st boss, leading to my mom taking the game away from me, only leaving paper mario. I also do see the flaws super has compared to the 1st pm and ttyd. But I brush them off every time I play on a new save file. I've probably completed it over 20 times now lol. I have strong attachment to the characters, story and simple gameplay mechanics, and it's mostly due to nostalgia. I tear up every time Blumiere and Timpani gets reunited at the end. Even the credits ost makes me tear up man, I flicking love super paper mario. The other games are also great in their own ways but it'll never ever top spm for me.

Thanks for making this video dude. I thoroughly enjoyed watching it. It was one of the first mario games I’ve ever played too, still have the disc in the blockbuster case I got it in lol!

I got Super Paper Mario with my Wii for Christmas 2008. It was one of the first games that I truly fell in love with. I didn’t really understand the story the first time around, but it was such a charming and fun time. I replayed it a couple of years back and even though the gameplay leaves a lot to be desired, the story, writing, music, graphics, and overall presentation makes it one of my absolute favorites of all time.

5 hours?!? Yeah I’m definitely listening to this at work

Did I really just sit down and watch a 5+ hour video on a game that I've not only already fully completed, but love and defend to death? Of course I did! Why? Because I just love this game that much! But seriously though, Super Paper Mario is a very special game to me. It touched me on an emotional level in a way that very few games have, and I couldn't ask for a more beautiful and heartfelt conclusion to what is now my all-time favourite trilogy of games. And hey, I even learned a few new things about the game from this video, so thanks for making it! And yes, I do have the Whacka card. ;)

Super Paper Mario is by far one of the most memorable in terms of gameplay. I really hope Nintendo remasters/remakes this game but I highly doubt it since it’s by far the most different Mario game of all Mario games. Who knows thou, we live in a post Mario RPG trailer world. Fingers crossed 🤞🏾

Years and years ago, when I played this game for the first and only (as of yet) time, I could not for the life of me find the pedestal for the yellow pure heart

The gameplay may be simple but in that simplicity comes skill in execution. Many people don't know that you can do tricks after bouncing on enemies to get higher score meaning you level up faster, and chaining tricks gives more and more xp the longer the chain. This does slow things down so it isn't often used by speedrunners save for times when you want to pause in the air above a boss so you can get a free hit when they jump and you bounced at an odd angle. This trick system leads to some of the most fun I've had in gaming trying to see how long of a chain I can pull off while rushing through a level.

I've always felt that the only thing holding the game back was that it was called "Paper Mario". Being beholden to the expectations of the previous two games while not actually even having ANY paper in it was the only thing keeping it from being recognized as the amazing game it is.

Even without Paper Mario it still has combat flow issues, some story issues you might not notice till you look at the themes in the game and how oddly unexplored it is being relegated to the end of a copy of the previous bonus dungeon. It has just too many issues at base.

This game is really really good, and it's definitely my favorite paper mario game. Definitely the black sheep of the series, but it definitely stays true to the paper mario formula in my opinion. I do think that if the series returned to its usual status quo after Super, it definitely would be a good change of pace, but that's not what happened unfortunately. Great video, man. Congrats on 100%ing it too. It's definitely no cakewalk

SPM was the only PM game i played (before sticker star cause it was a gift) and memories of playing it with my mom stick with me. Especially the music. The song that plays when youre about to get a pure heart qnd the song that plays during the Timpani and Blumiere flashbacks always felt so solemn and emotional. The gameplay was really fun too, even as a dumb kid, i could still beat it and have lots of fun. But the story? Its rare to see a game for kids with such a mature story premise, and i feel they handled it so well. Its a shame there wont ever be another one like this.

Super Paper Mario was a game that really marked my childhood, so much, that a game im making for a couple of years is partially based on it. Even when it has some notable flaws on its gameplay is still an spectacular Mario entry everyone should try at least once.
