Fun fact: In latin America one of the "of the" is deleted. The first movie is called "Planet of the apes: (R)evolution" with the parenthesis so it can be read as both "Revolution" and "Evolution". The second is "Planet of the Apes: Confrontation"; the third is "Planet of the Apes: The War"; and the fourth is "Planet of the Apes: New Kingdom". The titles from the original saga from the 60s and 70s were translated much more conventionally.
@Poliostasis7 ай бұрын
Those names are definitely more appropriate to the movies overall, revolution makes sense for Rise, confrontation is most certainly a big part of Dawn... Although I guess Rise of the Planet of the Apes and Dawn of the Planet of the Apes just sound cooler to me than revolution or confrontation. Mostly because they're single syllable words, and they still fit.

Regarding the Caesar trilogy titles I think they are titled correctly. Rise = Rise of intelligence. Dawn = Dawn of war. War = the internal war that's transpiring within Caesar, him dealing with killing Koba, loosing his family & seeking revenge & of course the literally war taking place around them.

Something modern audiences don’t understand is that this is how sequels were done back in the day. Movies didn’t have a “part 2” until Godfather II, or a colon with a subtitle. In the ‘60s, movie sequels either had completely unrelated titles (Shot in the Dark), or tacked another word like “Return” onto the front or end of the man character or last film (Revenge of the Pink Panther). So a Planet of the Apes sequel that wants to tell you it’s a sequel to that movie will include it. Jump ahead to the new ones, and they maintain that for IP recognition.

Kinda relates to the topic, I think “Attack on the Planet of the Apes” would be an awesome title for the sequel to Kingdom

All of the movie titles except one use a generic "catch word" that could be applied to many franchise titles: Escape, Conquest, Battle, Dawn, Rise, War, Kingdom.. y'know, like Escape of the Jedi, Rise of the Sith... the only truly unique title is BENEATH.... it's almost bizarre, and quite unexpected. Many of us may have contemplated a War or Eascape or a Dawn of the Planet Of The Apes, but BENEATH? Who ever thought, "Statue of Liberty, fine... but I wonder what's beneath this planet?" It was a truly original and intriguing title. As was the movie. Still my personal favorite of all the Apes films, despite the criticism it gets.

I think from an outsider or very casual Ape film fan's perspective, their criticisms of the titles being long aren't actually that they're long but just they don't roll off the tongue because "of the" is repeated twice. And it's where other franchises like Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, and Harry Potter do have long titles but they're formated differently with the franchise name first and then the subtitle. So like I have zero issue with the title Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes but for the people criticizing, they'd probably prefer something like, Planet of the Apes: Kingdom, or something like that. Theres a lot of people who havent even seen the films and dont take them seriously because "talking monkey = funny", so Id imagine they'd be nitpicky about the titles
@Ape-Nation7 ай бұрын
I guess it's hard for me to truly understand that perspective as such a diehard fan. It's all I've ever known from the movies, so it just has always felt right to me. That's a fair point though.
@RogerMcCoy7 ай бұрын
Maybe it's just me, but I think the "of the" flows better when speaking than the awkward implied pause of a colon. Not that I'd prefer "Endgame of the Avengers"; it has to fit the film.

I love the titles, but I think the reason why people complain about the Planet of the Apes and not Star Wars/LotR titles is because the subtitles of the PotA movies are too generic. Casual moviegoers probably wont understand that you are referring to a PotA movie when you say "Kingdom" or "War", where as "The Return of the King" or "Empire Strikes Back" are obviously LotR/Star Wars. Great video though and I hope they continue the title tradition for the coming movies.

Great video as usual for this channel! Agree with 90% of what you said… I still think Dawn and Rise should have been flipped. Dawn is a word for the beginning of something. I understand your point about Caesar and agree it’s about him, but don’t forget the rest of the title. It’s not Rise of Caesar, it’s Rise of the Planet of the Apes. regardless of whether or not the focus is on Cesar, I think Dawn would’ve been better overall because it’s about the beginnings of the planet of the apes. The second one is about the rise to prominence of ape society over human society. But, as you say, not all that important. keep making great videos, please!

I think the first sequel wanted to include the words “Planet of the Apes” in its title just to make it totally clear that it was a sequel, and since it chose “Beneath” for its key word instead of another noun, it couldn’t have swapped out the word “Planet” to make a different “__ of the Apes” title anyway. After that, it just felt consistent to keep giving each sequel a title that was built around a key word and the words “Planet of the Apes.”

I look at them as build ups until we get to the final movie, which could be the 6th or 9th if they really planning that, or whatever after if they might do more, and then THAT final movie will be simply Planet of the Apes. Showing this build up of the Rise of Caesar, the Dawn of what’s to come, the War and the toll it’s taken on the apes, the Kingdom that rose from the generations that follow and so forth until we finally get from point A to Z and get to the established PLANET of the Apes.

Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes was the first Planet of the Apes movie that I saw, and when I first heard about it, I legit thought "Didn't that movie come out a few years ago?" What I mean to say is: as someone who didn't pay attention to the franchise the names are so similar that when I heard about Kingdom I was thinking about when War came out. Also the difference between the LotR and SW and the PotA movie titles is that you can say "I watched Attack of the Clones last night" or "I'm going to watch Return of the King tomorrow" with no context and everyone knows what you are talking about, but you can't say "have you watched Kingdom yet?" without the Planet of the Apes context because the "Planet of the Apes" is the last bit of the title. You're right though, it is a different naming scheme and makes the franchise stand out by naming alone, I also don't get the complaining, by the time they got to Escape, it was tradition and they can't go back now. Hopefully I gave you a different perspective on a couple of the arguments. Also your points on Rise/Dawn/War are a total W take. I really only felt that Dawn was misnamed, but after hearing your explanation, I totally agree. Also, at the end of Dawn, Caesar said something along the lines of "now comes the war".

The only ones where I think there's some merit to saying the titles work better the other way are Rise and Dawn. I love both of these films, but I legitimately confuse the titles on an instinctive level. I even did it while typing this comment. (I was listing them in order and I nearly typed Dawn and Rise.) Ultimately any logic I use is just justifying an instinctive confusion, and I think the confusion itself is a stronger argument, but here's how I can try to reason it out: "Dawn" is defined in Merriam-Webster (and similarly in many other definitions) as "to begin to grow light as the sun rises." It's literally defined as "the thing that happens before a rise." While you're correct that Rise depicts the Rise of *Caesar*, it's not called Rise of the Leader of the Planet of the Apes. The "planet of the apes" doesn't really start to "rise up" to any real extent until the next film, or arguably the time between the two films. On the other hand Rise just shows the first glimmer of such a planet; in other words, a "dawn." That said, I don't view this as a substantial criticism either. I don't think the titles are a bad fit for either movie in isolation, and I definitely wouldn't want them to go back and switch them. But I do acknowledge that many of us instinctively know that a "dawn" comes before a "rise", and even if we like how the titles pair with the movies the order can instinctively feel a little against the grain. Nice video in any case. I hope they never abandon this title scheme. And you're right that War is definitely paired with the right film.

I don’t have a problem with them, especially because stupid not to change it now because it’s tradition at this point. The examples I think you listed don’t get the same criticism is because, the other part of the name is a subtitle. Where in Apes they put in front of “series name”.

The only problems I ever had with these titles is that Rise & Dawn sound too similar. Both sound like they could be the origin. Dawn probably should’ve had a different name. Sometimes I slip up and when talking about the first movie in the prequel series, I accidentally call it Dawn and the next movie Rise.
@taker687 ай бұрын
The studio would not want a sequel to not have "planet of the apes" in there. They could do a new film title with a tag saying "a sequel to POTA" or "continuing the POTA saga." Someone likes the old fashioned way of titling, old Hollywood would never do hyphens or colons. Had to be "Return of...." or "Son of...." War makes total sense but maybe Rise and Dawn could be switched. Had to use War as Battle was already taken. Your ideas make sense.
@JediHangout7 ай бұрын
I don’t understand why anyone would have any issues with the titles of the film. Having the name Planet of the Apes is important because it’s the name of the Franchise. It needs that name in there someplace in order to understand it’s that Franchise. Plus it’s an awesome title. What do they want in short hand “Monkey Planet”? LOL. I think that was the translation of the novel in England. I agree with you on the titles of the trilogy. Rise is fitting for the first one because Cesar is rising and the ape civilization is rising. Dawn is perfect for the second one because it’s just settling in as a society and human society going backwards. The final film in the trilogy is a total war. It’s defiantly a war, no other way to put it. It’s what I look at a 2.0 or larger version of Battle for the Planet of the Apes, which was a small battle at the end of the film. But here we get a huge war with military on both sides.

@NeoConnor17 ай бұрын
The problem is people don't look at the layers and context for why films have the titles they do anymore. Like I understand the surface level simplicity of their complaints. But if you pull back the layers of the titles, they do make sense. Like you said, Rise refers to the ape uprising. It makes sense. Dawn refers to a new beginning. However, it also refers to a shift, a progression, a descent into a new age, a darkness, if you will. What does the second act of a trilogy do? It goes darker, it shifts. Then War refers to the conflict within Caesar's soul. It's the conclusion of his arc, the war within his soul. They all have pefect titles. People just love to complain. The only title I am not fond of is Conquest. Not because it isn't appropriate. It's a bit of mouthful. Conquest just doesn't gel as well as the other titles do.

lol firstly I’m gonna say I love these films . Caesar’s trilogy is probably my favorite trilogy of all time . But from the point of view of making films and communicating to a wide audience what the movies are about through a title (which is what a title is generally supposed to do) they do a poor job . Sure we can jump through hoops to make them “work” as you have done here, but the fact that any explanation or defense is needed at all, already indicates that they’re less than ideal. Rise would have been better as Dawn. Dawn would have been better as Rise . War - well it’s fine - slightly misleading but I don’t find it problematic but I can see how audiences expected something else. Do these minor title issues detract from how amazing these films are? Not at all. Would I even care if the movies had no titles and it was just Caesars Tale Parts 1,2,and 3? Nope. Why? Because the movies are that incredibly good. They just have kinda funny titles that weren’t quite thought through entirely by the apes who work at the movie studio. It’s not that serious lol
