I'm one of the Pontus players, we saw that they were slow on the reaction and thought the sally out would do enough damage to finish the match. I wouldn't do it against more skilled players but i was a fun battle to play.

The sally out is definitely a good idea. But what I would do would be just standing there and avoid engagement, which can delay the attackers. Because you stand no chance against those noble fighters and Macedonians

Sorry to say but you mustve been damn stupid or crazy to try that. You are playing literally one of the weakest factions and you give up your biggest advantage, the walls, to try and best a superior infantry force with more reinforcements nearby and more cav support in a battle over open ground? I understand that the goal was to kill enemies before they even got to the walls but you also pushed out pikemen, which are only truly effective in checkpoints, and exposed them to withering arrow fire where they got absolutely mowed down. That is NOT, what we here call a pro gamer move. From a tactical standpoint, it was hands down one of the stupidest moves Ive seen in this game. But it looks like it worked in your guys favor, which I DEFINITELY was not expecting. As a viewer, I havent seen anything quite that entertaining in awhile! Good game!

@@daviddowney1933 I agree that pushing out the pikes in the open was a mistake but the idea of a sally out was not. At that moment we had lots of reserves left. Based on how the battle was playing out, a sally out was not a bad idea. Pontic swords are a real cost-effective unit and i had archer fire from the walls. Even though the sally out got wrapped up, the enemy team didn't had the troops or ammo left to win. Pontus is IMO not a weak faction (great cav, celtic units, cheap but good infantry). Again, i would't do it against good players but even then Pontus can take on strong factions with good players (as a defender).

Would have taken a lot of attacking troops out of the seige. When they pushed up, that was when it became ill advised.

"It has come to triarii" - an ancient saying meaning basically "It all went to sh#t" since the triarii were in the 3rd (and last) line and barely used. So, of course, send them first!

That's not negative though. Triarii were the most wealthy and experienced soldiers in the early Roman Armies. So of course, you would only use them when needed. That saying means that the Triarii now need to clean up the shit the Hastati created.

The young inexperienced guys go first, so they can get stuck in with gusto, tire themselves out, then hand over to the Principes, who were more experienced and better soldiers. They were generally expected to carry the day after the Hastati weakened them up... The Triarii stood in a line at that back, and, as Lindbeige has said, any Roman in front of them who might think about running, would turn to see a line of older, experienced men, standing in a line holding spears pointing in their direction.

P.S. Little trick that works a lot, when your units glitch on a tortoise like Macedon did, try having them drop the siege equipment and pick it back up, I have had that work many times for me.

The attackers started out really good with the initial assault, Rome and Carthage hitting at the same time, but Macedonia taking to long and Carthage pulling back caused them to drop the initiative and left Rome to dry. Really liked the defenders aggression, where able pick up the ball and moved on the attackers, as soon as the fumbled the defenders dictated the tempo of the battle, while the Pontic Sally failed, it diverted troops and attention from the main push and allowed the defenders to really dig in and hold that ground, even doing cheeky encirclements.
