Very helpful video. I made it into adept on Mahjong Soul by total luck apparently, because I've been on a rough patch of dealing in for about a week now.

It never crossed my mind that dora tiles counted toward the tile count, mostly because I play on clients

Hi thanks for the video there isnt enough content this good for mahjong. Where did you get the mat and the mahjong set?
@LightGrunty6 жыл бұрын
Thank you for the kind words. As for the mahjong set I used in these videos, it was a top-notch modern set from Japan, which my friend got for me. Apparently the one I use isn't sold anymore. It's really too bad, since it's such a high quality set and includes color tenbou. If you're looking for a mahjong set, you should be able to find some good ones online. You could probably find one similar to mine on amazon.co.jp, if you can somehow import it. If not, I know one of my friends got a nice Japanese-style set from Yellow Mountain Imports and a "Junk Mat" mahjong mat through Amazon.

Your mahjong mat is a junk mat?
@LightGrunty6 жыл бұрын
No, my mat is a Batmat. It's a hard mat that folds in half and is a little larger than a Junk Mat. They're pretty difficult to find outside of Japan, though. A Junk Mat is a soft mat with hard borders. The borders come apart so you can roll up the mat, and it takes up less space than a Batmat. I prefer a hard mat, so that the edges of the mat can hang off of the sides of a table if need be. However, Junk Mats are widely used and easier to find online.

One question I have is this temporary furiten rule you mentioned. If you discard that 8-Sou at around 2 minutes, but you are at let's say 10000 points left, but the other players each are at 20000 points I am at 30000, this means I am not allowed to wait on your 8-Sou in order to hit a wealthier player for the Ron-Cost in order to build up my lead? Whether or not that's strategically viable if there's a Riichi hand going around is questionable in the first place, but I did have one single instance recently where I considered doing it and didn't because I was unsure if I'm allowed to.
@LightGrunty9 ай бұрын
It would depend on where you are seated relative to me. For example, if you were seated across, then no, you cannot pass on that 8sou and then win on another discarded tile that turn. However, temporary furiten is cleared as soon as you take your turn, so you can wait for another round of discards if you want to try to target another player.

@@LightGrunty Thanks a lot for the reply! Then it works just as I assumed in that situation - waiting that long probably was too risky as the person I would've wanted to hit was to my left. On that note thank you a lot for this comprehensive channel, I've had a little bit of an obsession with Mahjong lately and have an actual urge to be just a little above decent at it. I love watching your videos off the side every now and then to take a few snippets of strategy to implement in my next games c:

Hello, Thanks for the content ! I have a question regarding your furiten explanation when you talk about suji. If I have a understood correctly you said that you cannot win with a sided wait with one of a tile you discarded (like the 5p in the vid) even if you ron on the other part of the wait (the 2p in the vid). Is this correct ? Because I thought furiten in this case is only applied to the tile itself and not the entire wait
@LightGrunty5 жыл бұрын
Furiten is a state applied to your hand, not any one tile. So, if any of your discarded tiles would complete the winning shape of your hand, regardless of yaku, then your hand is furiten and cannot be won by ron. Of course, a hand that is furiten could still be won by tsumo.

@@LightGrunty Specifically if you're in tenpai with a wait containing something you've discarded. You can discard a 9 pin and win with 7 8 9 pin in your hand just fine, so long as you completed your hand with a different meld or the pair. Might seem obvious, but this was something I couldn't quite get for the first few days of playing.

I am on several mahjong-related Discord servers, but I do not have one specifically for my videos. The most accessible one is here: discord.gg/n6aYrjx If you have questions for me, please feel free to ask them in the comments of my KZbin videos. You could also find me on Twitter.
