Imagine having coaches like this when you were young!

Right? I was in middle school and had coaches that would shoot the puck at your head if you were just standing around and didn't have two hands on your stick. Ya, we had helmets on, but in the 80s I swear if you didn't have natural talent, the system couldn't be bothered with making you better, they just send you to house league. I see all the tools that are out there now and it is nuts. Heck, i'm watching these videos for pointers at 47 just because my one team needs me to pay D and I have only had to cover it, not play it on the regular.

I grew up playing and never had any coaches. I've had my son playing in a coached program since he was 6 and he's already better than me. I wish this guy was closer, my son is a teenager now and gets irritated when I make him sit and watch videos, lol

Except you aren't allowed to coach now or teach breakouts etc at young age. Hockey Canada defines what can be "Coached", drives me nuts to see Peewee kids not knowing where to position etc because they weren't allowed to be taught that when younger.

So happy to see this. Learned this skill in the early 1980s as a young player learning the contact aspect of playing defence. It's ridiculous how many NHL defencemen don't do this basic skill today. Glad to see it being taught to the young players.

Im learning to skate , i have been skating for 14 months, its difficult. Taking the opportunity to watch these videos has made me progress a lot better. If i won lotto, i would invest in learning from this man . I can't afford lessons , so been self taught is not good, i guess i can only try and learn from others while skating and having free advice unfortunately

Playing left defense, in these situations I kept my stick across my body toward middle ice and used to put my right hand up to head level that way with all that noise it looks blocked to most forwards. Usually they would then take the outside letting me and my partner (the boards) pinched off that rush. To me as a defenseman the +/- stat was more important than my actual point totals. I loved playing defense. Great video, great coaching.

YOU MISS ALOT......THE IDEA OF KEEPING YOUR OPPONENT ON THE PERMITER.. Letting them shoot from outside . EXPLAIN THE IMPORTANCE AT ALL TIMES. ALSO ...... Stick on stick checking is PARAMOUNT. STICK ON THE ICE AT ALL TIMES , matching the opponents stick as closely as possible... COACHES STICK IS OFF THE ICE MOST OF THE TIME... POOR SKILLS... NOT A ENTIRE PACKAGE. Stick on stick checking is a VERY IMPORTANT SKILL MOST DONT UNDERSTAND... THIS is Ok for kids learning at a LOWER LEVEL, I guess, BUT WHY NOT TEACH THEM SOME SKILLS, not just the OBVIOUS PLAY of keeping your opponent WIDE..... LOW SKILL LEVEL BY THE COACH.
