@@DefinitelyNotDefinitiveGames I think a hybrid approach is probably most popular. Open combat can be unforgiving and it doesn't take much to get overwhelmed. The game rewards exploration, often there are several different paths to your objective, a lot of hidden pathways. Also not showcased is the "persuasion" mechanic. Upgrades that allow you to read physiological responses to a conversation you have with an NPC. This is important as choices you make will have a direct impact on the outcome of the conversation. Sometimes deadly impact. While the frenetic action oriented combat is a highlight, you can also take a non-lethal approach to taking out npcs (excepting bosses of course). There are achievements for getting through levels or the game without killing anyone except objectives where you're not given a choice. All of which influences the kind of end you are presented with. Few games approach the questions presented to the player, philosophical as well as the practical considerations involved. This isn't your typical telling of the well worn trope of Frankenstein's monster, questions of control and decision-making on a societal scale, but also asks about the dangers of an irrational overreaction. The game doesn't give you an answer to any of those things but asks the player what their answers to those questions would be. I found the ending pretty emotionally impactful.

To set the scene: Humans have developed a method for curing illness and disability in the form of mechanical augmentation. The "augs" require a drug, Neuropozyne, to disable the body's immune response and stop rejection. Some job, from construction to prostitution, even demand their employees get augs to be better workers. That means more then your livelihood, but your very life is at the behest of corporations. The protagonist, Adam Jenson, the end result of genetic engineering, posses a gene which negates rejection. He starts the game after being fired from Detroit SWAT, and is hired, without knowledge of this gene, as the head of security for Sarif Industries. Over the course of the game, something happens which causes everyone augmented individual on Earth to go insane and kill everyone around them. The Icarus imagery, the Latin naming scheme, are all deliberate. The entire game is wrapped in the idea of Humanity reaching beyond its' grasp. There are factions in the middle. One, which seeks the destruction of the augs, as they are seen as less than human, the Illuminati, several pro-aug groups, and you. Caught in the middle trying to figure it all out. HR and MD are good games. Without a doubt. But if you want what is very likely the best game ever made, you need to play the original Deus Ex.

While Human Revolution and Mankind Divided focus more on the societal impact of body-modification and it's repercussions, the first Deus Ex, the oldest which isn't shown here is actually a sequel. In that game you play as JC Denton, an bio-engineered agent working for the UN with nanomachine augmentation in his bloodstream which is less invasive while giving him even greater benefits. The game focuses more on secret societies controlling governments, a decay of society, artificial intelligence and a deadly plague called the Gray Plague, which is killing the world population while the poor fight for "vaccines" that only halt the viruses progression for 24 hours, while those "deemed vital to societal order" suspiciously gain them quicker and easier. Throughout the game you have to figure out what's going on while traveling the world and fighting (or joining) these secret societies in a bid to create a New World Order through various means.

I love you commented on "The Hunger Games" fashion from the first trailer. Basically it's the fashion of that times based on Renaissance styling to signify a new human revolution. The fashion was stripped down in the sequel to show the renasissance is over and humans are in a place lower than they were before. The game is basically revolves about a conspiracy plot to control augmentations and it's usage since it is a powerful tool. The main character unknowingly held the secret to make it more acessible to the public.

In the first few seconds, you probably got the Icarus symbolism but the guys looking over Jensen scene was a recreation of _The Anatomy Lesson of Dr. Nicolaes Tulp_ painting by Rembrandt. This series is supposed to make you think. Even the bad guys kind of have understandable motivations even if how they go about them is really messed up. It has a lot of sections where they convincingly do some really cool twist that you can figure out if your paying attention and put in a little extra leg work which is good writing and rewards the player for going the extra mile. Always nice when a game makes you think your a big brain having person. Gameplay wise Human Revolution is more of an RPG where for the most part you get a mission and can deal with it however you want. Then you can upgrade Jensen however you want to play. Like be a non-lethal stealth guy or shooty shooty Rambo guy. You actually don't get all the toys and those toys really just give you options. Like the lighting thingy all it really does is let you jump off of ledges. Even the punch through wall thing has it's downsides. Just narratively it's very wordy and has that whole Matrix thing going for it. The original 2000 Deus Ex was kind of like that as well just much more open and more unforgiving to the player. And Invisible War (the sequel).......was short.

What they really get at are 1% that control all of the world and how they mold the world to what they want. Yes, yes, YES!!! Been hoping you'd get to this franchise for a while now, think I requested it once or twice. Both these games are freaking awesome! There's also I think 3 older games that actually take place later in this future timeline, where nano based augmentation has replaced cybernetic stuff. When Bethany said it was like Terminator meets Matrix, I chuckled and thought, "Sure, but to me the more obvious similarities are with Robocop and Blade Runner!"😁 Regardless, a cyberpunky dystopic future for sure!👍 Gameplay is mostly first person (switching to 3rd person in conversations and when you take cover behind a wall or whatever.) There are open world elements in the form of central hub areas you can explore and talk to NPCs in between story missions, side missions to do, etc. There's also multiple ways to accomplish just about every task/mission. You can go in guns blazing, be stealthy, find alternate routes, hack computers to get more info(either story related or just extra world building stuff), so on and so forth. In other words, I love these games! Watching you watch these trailers did bring to mind two other games made around the same general time period as these(late 2000s/early 2010s) that I think you'd enjoy. One is a more straightforward action/platformer type thing set in 2084 Paris called Remember Me where you play as a badass, sexy redhead memory hunter named Nilin. The other is an international spy thriller type story with RPG style presentation and gameplay called Alpha Protocol. Cheers!!! Also, your post watch discussion about the pros and cons of technological development made me certain you two would like, if you've never seen it, the show Black Mirror, which is another dark future thing exploring those very themes and ideas. Each episode is basically its own stand alone short film (all at different points back and forth along the same timeline), each focused on a different technology, some frighteningly plausible. For instance, when you were talking about those robot dogs being used by police/security/military personnel, one episode of Black Mirror, "Metalhead" explores that very thought, the possible misuse/danger of putting weapons on a robot guard/attack dog. Something to keep in mind for your other channel!

These two games are prequels to the original Deus Ex that came out in 2000. That one was much darker and did not show a “golden age.” That’s pretty much what the prequels are showing us, how the promise of a golden age of augmentation turned into a dystopia. In a sad moment of irony, the New York skyline of the original game is missing the WTC towers. The actual reason was because of graphics limitations, but when asked, the devs came up with an explanation that they towers were destroyed in a terrorist attack. That was before 9/11 actually happened (to be fair, terrorists had attempted to bring them down before). In the original game, mechanical augmentation is slowly on its way out, being gradually replaced by nanoaugmentation. Nanoaugs still look largely human

2027, of course, not so far by now, but you should take into consideration, that Deus Exe Hr and MD are prequels to original Deus Ex (made in 2000) and Deus Ex Invisible War (made in 2003), which setting were 2052 and 2072 respectively, so Eidos had very specific time period to choose from. So if you want to know the creepy thing about Deus Ex? The only thing that's off about its predictions by and large is the level of technology in its timeline. The original game legitimately kicked off in the aftermath of a 9/11-like terror attack, and the game was released in 2000. A global pandemic was a central point of its plot. While it's made its missteps, it's a series I love, because it's spy roleplaying, where most problems have multiple solutions. You can always just punch, stab or shoot the problem, but there's also smarter ways of dealing with things if violence doesn't feel right (or would cause more problems), like using diplomacy on the problem, sneaking around the problem with a cloaking device (or just squeezing through a hidden air duct), making the problem's ally violently betray the problem via hacking or subterfuge, or even blackmailing the problem into being your solution. You can be a dumb sledgehammer that unlocks doors with close-range shotgun blasts or hand grenades, as that's a gameplay style they let you do, but you can also be a smart scalpel, that gets in and gets out without being seen or even tipping off anyone that you were even there. Or you can just suckerpunch everyone from hiding into unconscious heaps like you're cyborg Batman, because that also works.

I had my doubts when I launched this game for the first time. the intro movie cleared all of them. fun easter egg hunting, if you're up for it: listen carefully to the ambient track for Tai Yong's offices and then watch HBO's Westworld. The main theme progression is almost identical. I don't know if that was intentional, but sure is one hell of a coincidence all around. also.... 1:26 FUCK YOU, YELENA! FUCK *YOU* in particular!

A curious difference in Ghost in the Shell is that civilians in that series are mainly organic, but have their brain "cyberized" after puberty ends. So instead of cybernetic limbs it is their brain that's artificial. That never really jived with me, seeing how the human brain is the trickiest organ to understand and replicate. That aside, it was certainly an excellent inspiration for Deus Ex back then, ahead of its time, much like it was for the Matrix. When some tech billionaire invents NeuraLink I certainly won't be in a rush to get it. 2027 is right around the corner - it's not the end of the world, but you can see it from here :P kzbin.info/www/bejne/kJnGiHiei7inpbM

While both game have their flaws, it is still one of the best games I ever play. The story, the messages, and game mechanics is amazing. A lot better than newer games like AC Odyssey for example - in term of story and characters development. I'm still amazed by how much emotion you can see in Adam's mechanical eyes, which shouldn't be possible. Ps. your comment "it's like Terminator meet Metrix" is very close to how the game feel

The Deus ex franchise is a very interesting one. The first one came in 2000 and was a masterpiece. There is a meme if somebody mention Deus Ex you need to reinstall it and play it. They let Warren Spector to create a game of his dream and he did it. They took all conspiracy theories and make a world around it. It played in 2052 and the World was beliveable. When you mentioned "can you imagine that in 5 years?" i was remembered the first game because in there that 2052 was believable. They didn't add any tint around it but it was dark. All the missions took around night. I could go on and on with this game forever it still my favourite game today The second game was released in 2003 and it was a big failure. Around that time started the hate from PC gamers towards console gamers. They started to create games for both platforms and that meant they must to dumb down lots of parts of the PC games so the console gamers could enjoy it too. It was a big part of the market where everyone tried to get in. Deus ex 2 was a great example for this. The customizable inventory were gone and become some easy accessible slots on the right side. The augmentation system were not improved but dumbed down. Your background infos notes and pictures from the first game gone and some simple texts took its place. The gun system was changed. In the first game you got every weapon with different ammos. In the second every gun used the same ammo. You used the same ammo for a rocket launcher and a small pistol. The hacking/lockpicking system was also dumbed down. I could go with this forever too, terrible loading time, strange stuttering engine, worst story and world build etc. It took place in 2072, this game got a purple tint around it and was way more futuristic than the first one. Then these two new Deus Ex games came out from Square Enix in 2011 and 2016 Outside the Orange tint and too futuristic design it really try to live up to the first Deus ex. You get lots of references and explantions for the first game. They are great game and the developres really respected the source material but it feel they would liked to create a different game. These are great Cyberpunk games but didn't follow 100% the first game world building. This game in world building was between the first two games which is odd beacuse it took place in 2027 and 2029 What i reccomend is to listen the story of these games at least once. It will move your gray matter a little a bit

Human Revolution is a very... lopsided entry into the series, it was the first time the franchise was built by several different studios with very mixed results. As an example the bosses were outsourced to a completely different studio than the one that made the base game, and they were an absolute mess on launch. Mankind Divided is a lot more stable and well put together and focuses more on story and consequences. Both are excellent games, a little preachy and bipolar at times with Jensen having basically no actual choice other than black result or white result with no room in between. Nevertheless they're solid stealth/shooter games that asks very interesting questions and give some pretty interesting answers as well. One thing to bear in mind though is the final game for the series never came so you won't get any definitive wrap up to any of the ongoing themes or story.
@DefinitelyNotDefinitiveGames2 жыл бұрын
That’s so weird that they had two different studios working on different parts of the game. We heard the first Deus Ex circa 2000 is the best entry into the franchise even though technically it’s a sequel 🤔

@@DefinitelyNotDefinitiveGames The first Deus Ex is a literal sandbox, like literal literal. You can go the entire game without killing anyone, you can talk your way through a lot of the game's conflicts, you can skip entire chunks of the plotline, you can dismantle virtually every group in the game, or simply leave them completely intact and all the conspiracies in place. Very much a build your own adventure style game.

I see you haven't reacted to Cyberpunk 2077 trailers yet, the actual game's launch was a shitshow, but since it's from the makers of the Witcher 3 the hype was through the roof and I think half of the game's budget was blown on marketing based on the amount of trailers, featurettes and gameplay videos (like 15 in the channels playlist) it got over it's development, similar subject matter to Deus Ex, but with more grime and GTA-style satire. Deus Ex is more covert ops and global conspiracy while Cyberpunk's got the capitalist rat race, sensationalist mass media, dystopia on it's last legs feeling. It's a shame the game didn't turn out as good as the advertising even after the fixes.
