I'm so glad you both take extreme notice of how Ruby has slowly been breaking down. A small detail people tend to forget that V1 established was that She. Internalizes. Everything. From the moment she could process that her mom was missing/gone/dead as a child, she has just been soaking all of this trauma in and has only let herself reflect or share her grievances a grand total of O N E time. That was the short talk with Oscar back in Volume 5 and I can't really count the talk with Yang near the end of V8 because that was fresh off of realizing that the hound had been a Silver-eyed person. And even then it immediately switched back over to Penny and the virus. She didn't even get the chance to start crying with her sister at that moment.

Yeah, she's just locked on the idea that the hero just has to carry everything. Fairytale thinking. The badge and the burden. It's not entirely wrong, but wrong enough.

They didn't expect Jaune to have a helmet for one thing. And they didn't know Jaune had fallen after them. He calls his jackalope Juniper (as in team JNPR).

A neat thing is that Jaune's hairband is a strip of cloth that is a reminder of Pyrrha, the same one from the "Upgrades" scene in volume seven.

There are actually 4 of the "F" trauma responses, fight, flight, freeze and fawn, and fun fact, each member of the Schnee family reacted with a different one to Jacques' abusive behaviour, the mother froze and began drinking to cope, Winter ran away and joined the military, Weiss rebelled and demanded to train as a Huntress, and Whitley fell in line and convinced himself to like and obey his father.

Ruby giving away her emblem always gives me a sense of dread. I love your breakdown of Ruby at the end and how she has consistently been on the go and not had time to process her own baggage and it coming back to bite her. Be prepared for more of it!

Jaune's is one of the most tragic stories in this. Imagine that you had a friend ask you to take their life as an act of mercy. You have to sit there as they bleed out, and then you're left alone to relive that moment year after year with no one else to talk to. That's literal hell.

Just to let you know Jaune was the other set of footprints in the end of the intro 2:00 (to the left side). He's has been trapped in the EverAfter for 20 or more years. Poor Jaune he must have been so broken until he reunited with team RWBY.

worth noting that Jaune is in the same trauma boat as Ruby, he too has not really stopped since the events of Vol 3. Sure Ren and Nora were going through it with him, but they had their own baggage and have dealt with it in their turn, he hasn't, not properly, the closest he came would've been at Pyrrha's statue in Argus back in vol 6. His desire to be a hero has never changed, but he adopted his approach to leadership from Ruby after her "you're a leader now, you're not allowed to fail" pep talk to him in Vol 1.

Even though for us the volumes have spanned years, we have to remember that for them it's been a very short time. Volume 6 happened over 2-3 days. Volume 7 could be a month or so depending on how long RWBY trained in Atlas. Volume 8 was just 2 days. Everything keeps happening and Ruby has had no time to grieve or even process what's going on.

I remember that just before I first watched this episode thinking something along the lines of "This is the halfway point of the season if they don't have Jaune in this episode I am going to be quite upset. Half a volume without my favorite character and he's even in the intro, what's going on?" I did not expect this.

I absolutely love how you guys have a very critical eye for important details in this show, as opposed to just sort of watching it and glazing over. As others have said, you're some of the very few who picked up on how emotionally fragile Ruby is becoming, and how she really hasn't given herself time to process anything. And yeah, it's finally starting to show as it catches up with her. Really excited for you guys to see what comes next. :)

Both Ruby and Jaune’s idea of leadership is inherently poisonous cause it leaves no room for failure and is self destructive for the sake of others. The philosophy crumbles the moment you rack up failures and losses. That being said, it also inspired them to always do right by their friends. “You’re a leader now; you’re not allowed to fail.” has high highs and low lows.

Yeah, you’re right: Ruby hasn’t given herself time to process what’s going on because she feels she’s the one that has to encourage the others, but she’s doubting herself and what really gets me is that none of her friends realize how she’s dealing with everything. And now Jaune has appeared, I'm glad to know that I wasn't the only one who immediately noticed it was him, although I don't think it was that hard to notice either, the fact that Team RWBY didn't notice makes sense since they didn't know he was there too. I would have liked to see more explanation about Ruby's locket and the mother's promise, I feel like that was left up in the air and was never explained or developed.

It seems surreal to witness Jaune being a grown Knight in this volume that shock the internet by a storm out there. 😯 but it does make some wonders on what or how did he get older. So I like to share that the Opening seems to shine his faith with imagery if look closely at the scenes when he appears on the opening. It might give is context on what happen. Also the scene with the “BlackSmith” brings some interesting elements out there by the weapons they are showing on the wall. Than asking Little the question as it sounds like a Purpose.

Yeah, even Jaune had the sopport of his team when he was griefing and in his lowest moment, but Ruby, never had that. Because she is the strong leader that anyone can lean over, the only time Ruby was vulnerable was that time in kuroyuri when she apologize to Jaune of everything.
