Tissue culture is so cool. One of my friends partners works in a lab performing tissue culture propagation. Its taking a piece of plant and using an initial hormone to create 'undifferentiated cells'. (Think leafy vegetive growth without roots) This first stage only pushes top growth without roots as the chemicals and hormones used 'tell' the plant to divide and multiply without making roots. Once a sample has multiplied in size to a reasonable sample size. The cluster of growth (undifferentiated cells) are then cut up into smaller pieces and placed back onto agar but with rooting hormones. The plants will grow roots and once a good size can be acclimatised. Check out kitchen culture, you can have a go at home!

I bought a package of 5 variegated Frydek. They all died. I also bought variegated Bambino. I had like 14 plantlets. I’m down to 2. Unfortunately, this process is definitely not for me. Doing everything “right” and watching them die is heartbreaking.
@plantsbymelissa11 ай бұрын
Oh no 🥹 I’m so sorry!! Do you mind sharing what you think happened? When I lost 3 of the first plants I think it was staying too moist inside so they rotted. I’m thinking variegated ones might be more tricky. The 3 new ones I bought 2 are variegated so I am very curious to see how they do 😊

I just bought a tc variegated black velvet from Orange Lake Nursery and knew nothing of what to do with it, but it looks like the only thing I did wrong was not thoroughly scrub the jelly stuff off, but I guess I could pull it out it's cloch and still do it and change out the medium in case there's any jelly in it. I'm so glad you made this video!

Congratulations on the BMF! Love that Monstera. I can verify 100% it’s SLOW. Fun to watch, but Thai Cons lap it. We know slow growth rate can be good and bad. 😂 Since you like semi hydro, maybe Leca or Pon would boost the growth rate. I’m still a chunky soil mix guy. Look forward to watching the journey!

Perfect timing on the post as I’ve been meaning to explore and experiment with TCs! Thank you!! One question I have: often times, you’ll see growers/sellers with descriptions such as Burle Marx Flame (TC). What’s the reason behind the distinction on whether the plant is TC or non-TC?
@plantsbymelissa11 ай бұрын
I think the main thing I read was most TC tends to be sterile. So if you’re one that wants to cross your own plants and produce hybrids then you couldn't do that.

This is so helpful! Thank you . I have my eye on getting a pink variegated Bambino and I found a TC or a corm for close to the same price. I really can't decide what to try. Corm might be easier (if it sprouts🤦🏼♀️)
@plantsbymelissa11 ай бұрын
I would be cautious with buying corms because there’s a chance it’ll grow reverted. I saw the variegated bambinos and I almost bought one so it might be on my next order!

Do you mind me asking how much this way costs compared to a plant?
@plantsbymelissa11 ай бұрын
It depends I guess on the maturity/type of plant and whether it's a cutting or a full plant. Prices will vary between sellers too. This was around $130 on their site but I've seen them selling for hundreds and higher online. I think either way can have risks but if there's a plant you really want and don't want to pay as much this is definitely a great option!
