So weird you say that, Deftones forever make me reminiscent of the days when I was a teenager and would drive all across the city at night with nearly no one on the roads. It's such a memory that it's become synonymous in my mind with the music of Deftones. Especially the ambience of the orange glow from the street lamps. I used to just spend so much time in my car listening to White Pony and Around the Fur.

@@eltigre9171 SNW is my favorite for sure but I think it’s often a case of when whichever album came out and our connection to it. SNW is definitely one of their more creative and atmospheric releases I think also. And that’s what I see in Gore as well, it’s different and fresh for them, despite the complaints there are about it. I also prefer Gore to Ohms and Diamond Eyes to Koi No Yokan and from what I’ve seen others generally have that switched around.

It’s an acquired taste and not as much of a grower as White Pony, Saturday Night Wrist, and Koi No Yokan. Though, I liked Gore when it came out and supported the band by purchasing the CD and the vinyl (which looks nice in white btw). I did complain about the production of the album and felt that it could’ve been handled much better. Maybe it’s how they wanted the album to sound like. As far as the song writing goes, I get reminded of Hum when listening to it.

I love how Chino and Stephen have such different styles....but work together so well. Stephen brings the heavy riffs, chromatic weirdness, odd time signatures, and wall-of-sound shoegaze. His guitar approach is obviously a huge part of what makes this band such transcendent songwriters. But then Chino's style of single-note melodic lines is SO evocative and inspired. They have this red-lit urban noir liminal vibe to them. Chris Isaak's "Wicked Game" is a perfect example of that kind of guitar line...the lead line specifically. Man, imagine Deftones covering that?? Now I want to hear that...! Lastly....for anyone who's into that whole vibe, specifically the vibe of Hearts/Wires....you gotta check out Ethel Cain's song Gibson Girl. Within the first few seconds you'll immediately see what I mean. It's so good.....

The outro vocals “cut through, (away) this razor wire, (away) writhe till the end, break through (away) collect the wire, (away) died on your heart, writhe till the end”… it’s so void of hope in my eyes.
