Loved the art nerd humor about knowing Impressionist painters today, lol. It's also funny how perceptions change over time. I wouldn't bat an eye at this painting today, but it apparently was a shock in its day.. I'm sure a lot of our shocks will eventually blow away, too.

Degas himself said, "There is nothing spontaneous about my art, every painting is like a well planned crime." He was a draughtsman first and foremost, every painting is the product of well observed dancer studies on pencil or chalk... Later, as his eyesight deteriorated, he used coloured pastel to render finished pieces for exhibition. The coloured pastel works are some of his most vibrant, most popular works, influencing contemporaries and later artists like Picasso.
