deGrasse Tyson: Trump's 'Space Force' not a weird idea

Astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson says President Donald Trump's idea to create a "space force" is not a fundamentally flawed idea if the US Air Force, which currently manages all the US GPS and space capabilities, feels overwhelmed and can no longer handle the load as technology use in space evolves.

You'll never leave Earth. You might be laid in a suspension tank and hooked up to a simulation to make you believe you've blasted off and then you'll sleep forever, unless you choose to 'return' to Earth, in which case you will experience a simulated return trip and you will awaken not realizing you never left Earth at all. Nobody on Earth will ever know that you're only communicating across the spacenet, through a digital avatar.. and that your physical body is actually laying in stasis.. and nobody in stasis will be able to distinguish between their simulated existence and 'the real Mars' etc.. outer space as we know it is a hoax.

I see a Space Force as something like the Coast Guard. The Coast Guard does have a military mission, but most of what they do isn't military. They do law enforcement, immigration & customs, and rescue operations most of the time. A Space Force could combine all of what NASA does with all the space operations done by the US Military, mostly the Air Force. Space Force missions would be research, exploration, asteroid defense, satellite management, and yes, defense from hostile entities.

Nah, the most logical name is Star Fleet. We would then actually have a Starfleet Command at the pentagon. Now it is only science fiction because we have not funded it properly. Therefore we have to merge NASA with the space force and fund all of NASA's missions and research through DARPA.

But the Army and Navy also have their own space capabilities. That's because they know what they need and they can't depend on outsiders. So a Space Force would need to understand and take care of three separate military branches, meaning these branches would be competing against each other for money and hardware. Look at how the F-35 turned out, designed for Air Force, Navy, and Marines but in the end it doesn't work well for anyone. A single Space Force would be a similar compromise that works well for no one.

eh, personally I think we have more dire things to worry about down here on Earth that need our attention/funding more than space travel does. I mean, going to Mars would be cool and all, but we've seen Mars and know more about it than we really need to. Given that we're trillion of dollars in debt, I think Space Travel is something that ought to be put on the waiting list for the time being. Sending stuff to space is often more about boosting a nation's ego than anything else anyway. That's basically why we put people on the moon. I think our priorities as a nation are not in check, like, at all.

Matt Ward in the last couple of months, you people complained that Trump was not funding Space Related activities and called him anti-progress over it. Now you are suddenly concerned about the nation and deem it inappropriate to fund space related activities? Why not establish a border to ensure we have a stable amount of legal citizenry that pays up payroll and income taxes and does not use public institutions and facilities for free? Oh you don't want to have a secured border and immigration policy even when it's existence is vital to any program administered by any government that wishes to have any real and significant effects to the country. Oh sorry I forgot, the party line of "anti-trump" makes no logical sense whatsoever and that you get your cues from online comedians.

@ohroonoko
@ohroonoko 6 жыл бұрын
DocAlpha1 Oh I know there is, my point is that of course Air Force does not want to give up the space domain. Just like Army did not want to give up the air domain. And if you ask the Navy, they wouldn’t want to lose their control over the Marines, either. Nobody wants to give control. Therefore, when you ask Air Force if we need a space force, you should take their predictable answer with a grain of salt.
@benjaminbarrera5942
@benjaminbarrera5942 6 жыл бұрын
The Navy and Army also have a space capability which is something he ignores in the video. You would have to ask all three branches to give up control over their own space capability and give that control over to the new branch. The three branches would be competing for attention from the new Space Force and that's not going to turn out well. The current system has its problems but forcing these three branches to give up a capability they have had for decades isn't going to happen.
@ohroonoko
@ohroonoko 6 жыл бұрын
Benjamin Barrera well the Army and Navy and Marines all have aircraft but they don’t dominate that domain so it seems similar that the other branches might still touch on space to a far lesser extent than a full-fledged Space Force.

Mr. V Thinking From a military perspective, dominance and proactiveness first, then worry about the space junk. That a really not a ethical solution, but military victories generally emphasize winning first and social issues second (this is why collateral damage to civilians, structure property and environment exists). Space is just a new aspect for potential collateral damage. Also. For example, if China or Russia were thinking "well space superiority is essential for dominance", they will take this pragmatic stance. Also with space junk, it could go the way that space junk will be included into military tactics. Primitive militaries would do scorched earth practices such as burning everything or poisoning water for retreat, defensive and offensive tactics. Space may be just a new arena for these highly destructive, unethical and risky tactics to play out. This is what I believe the people with the guns think. Pretty scary but it is what it is. But in end, how do you change this reality? How do you make dominant, focused yet paranoid and untrusting of each other nations (US, China, Russia, etc) say "ok, let's disregard a potential war theater for the betterment of the world?" Probably the same as nukes. A few countries gain superiority then put their boots on the necks of weaker countries into not having nukes or giving them up/regulating them and maintain somewhat relative peace and order through the fear of mutual destruction.

Of fcking course he'll like the idea of anything that further advances space and provides funding towards innovation in space. Don't mistake Tyson's backing of the "space force" uttered by the brain dead racoontard as a sign of anything other than simple amusement by the *small loan of a million dollars* billionaire spoiled orange. What Tyson imagines when he says "space force" is a trillion times different than what the drumpftard imagines... trust me.

If only more people had the ability to separate the support of specific ideas from the idea that such support equates to the submissive worshiping of the guy for having it. It seems utterly impossible for most Trump supporters to understand that there are in fact those who can get behind certain a policy and/or ideas stemming from the Trump administration and yet not be completely submissive to his every whim and word no matter how often those whims ate self-serving and those words being nothing other than lies and pandering bullshit. Adam Hurst ahh, and here's the bit where the commenter assumes that the OP worships the president. Don't mistaken my "I love this presidency", for me suggesting that I love everything Trump does, it's actually far from that. One thing Trump has done is shaken up the political sphere so much that people can't tell heads or tails on anything, and it's created an amusing situation where the democratic party is imploding, and even the republican party is struggling to some degree, and at least I hope, in the end we'll end up seeing third parties such as libertarians or centrist parties finally rise to some degree of prominence.

Abraham Lopez, We humans (terrestrial beings) canot travel at light speed or in and out of sub-space. . not ever. A type 1 civilization like in Star Trek is not possible. Particle accelerators, experiments to reach absolute zero, anti-gravity and gravity wave technology are fruitless self-destructive pursuits that only temporarily benefit the military industrial complex. Nuclear fallout has a half-life of 250 million years.. Producing a gravity wave or transitioning plasma out of subspace, means a resulting black hole and there's no way to reverse a black hole like they show in sci-fi thrillers like the Flash. God gave us dominion over the Earth and a responsibility to take care of it. The Earth is our province.

You didn't get the point of the video then, you were just a politically motivated and biased person that liked a video because it made a seemingly absurd idea, that your party's President came up with, more palatable and reasonable. His point was that it's important to assess whether the Air Force's bureaucratic structure is capable or not of protecting American assets in space (mostly satellites). There was no answer given to that question in the video so we shouldn't be jumping to any conclusion. We should also consider that: a. We have no idea of what the intent and mission of this new Air Force would be (well, at least not the details). It could be something completely unrelated to what Neil was talking about. b. We don't know the reasoning behind the Trump administration that led them to take this decision. For all we know, this could've started out of a petulant whim. c. The US military has been recently aiming to reduce bureaucracy. A brand new branch will add another dimension of bureaucratic problems that seem counterproductive to the original goal.

A peaceful use of Earth treaty: Isn't that what we've got in Antarctica? How about the agreements between the sixteen governments on the ISS? "Human nature scares the hell out of me." Totally understandable, but human nature has been tamed incredibly over the past 10,000 years. Read "The Better Angels of our Nature" by Stephen Pinker. The 21st century is, by far, the most peaceful time in human history. This is a fact. Read the book, there's no way you can argue with this statement once you've read it. You want war? Look at WW2. Syria is nothing in comparison. So humanity's future in space _doesn't necessarily_ have to be like what happened in the first half of the 20th century.

Capitalism and technology has curbed large scale violence, human beings did not become more moral. At all. So if in space there's an unbalanced ratio of resources to humans, or if just one country is more ambitious than the others, yeah you will see some 20th century violence up there I love Stephen Pinker, he's totally right on his points. It's important to get the facts out, however it's also dangerous to be pollyannish about the reality of human nature. Underestimate our animal and selfish instincts at your own peril my friend

Throughout history, especially in America, war has been the largest driving force in the advancement in technology, as soon as its known that a certain technology will provide a tactical advantage, it immediately has millions of dollars sunk into it by the US government. So as a space enthusiast, this is exiting.

Commercial space flight is only 18 months away. It needs to be regulated, and like NGT says, the air force is handling it now, but clearly they are projecting commercial space flight will be too much for them to handle.

What's most important overall, is we would write the rules. A functional US space force could benefit from satellites, better missile coordination, solar panels that provide energy and more. We would write the rules of space.

wilz anz airforce already does that. I’m under the impression that as our extraterrestrial endeavors grow, they’ll take on responsibilities that will arise. The name fits now and into the future. I’m not wrong man, don’t know why you’re so hell bent on splitting hairs
@lesternygaard3286
@lesternygaard3286 6 жыл бұрын
blacklite911 it's a division of the army. Any wars in space will obviously be fought by them. They won't carry out endeavours as that's the space agencies' job , like Nasa. I'm not tryna split ends bruh but as you said space force is just the natural progression from air force. Extraterrestrial defense is not and probably won't be the chief concern in the coming years.

I think the arena does make a difference on whether peaceful interaction can be achieved. There aren't many people going to space.. and they aren't the average person. There is often a lot of international collaboration involved in space related endeavors. And a lot of money involved. Earth is crowded, chaotic and full of incredibly different scenarios.

First off, Pluto is _still_ a dwarf planet. Secondly, it's located in a belt, not on its own. This is referred to as "clearing the neighborhood". Until it breaks off on its own, it's considered to be just another celestial body in a cluster of other celestial bodies, just like the debris in the rings of Saturn.

Space, as a part of nature, is brutal. It will not hesitate to kill someone, and it is extremely unforgiving. However, it is also exceptionally beautiful. Beauty and brutality are not mutually exclusive, but are rather both a good guide to follow. I agree heavily with Tyson in that my confidence for peace in space is not great. Human nature is powerful and competitive, however it must be realized that our conditions for growing up on Earth are much different than our exploration of space. As it stands, we, humanity have an opportunity to explore together as one into the unforgiving but seductive void that is the cosmos. In our age of information, where contact across the world is instantaneous, allowing people normally separated in human history to explore each other’s differences. Right now in this age, we could voyage into space separately as countries and continue our long tradition of conflict, or we can go together as one and break that tradition with this new opportunity of discovery. An opportunity such as this comes once. Not just once in a lifetime, but once in the entire history of a self-aware species, a species that we don’t know is alone or not in the universe. I believe a space force is necessary to protect ourselves against the cold void that is space, a force to eliminate threats to Earth, such as near-Earth objects and space junk. A force that is unified across all nations, as one, for that sake of Earth’s survival. So, what will we do? Separate or together? We make this decision for our children, their children, and all the generations after us. While I do not know the dynamics of humanity and government if we explore space together, I can infer though that if we go separately, there will be conflict. There is no reason to believe there will not be, as we have our entire history as proof. Choose what you will, everyone is subject to an opinion, but before you decide, I urge you to know the magnitude of the decision and its impact. I expressed mine, what is yours?
