To think this was only 17-20 years ago. People complain about lgbt representation being too “in your face” and celebrated these days but it wasn’t too long ago that kids would be relentlessly bullied for being gay or sent to conversion therapy and it would be looked at as a “reasonable response” to homosexuality. In 2024 this might seem exaggerated, but it's not. When I was a freshman, I remember a popular guy in my class saying the same exact line "Why don't we just put all gay people on an island or something?" and the teacher didn't reprimand him at all. This was 2005 but I will never forget that and I remember feeling so disgusted but I didn't feel brave enough to say anything. It was so prevalent back then.
