As for Shane McKay, his parents likely didn't allow him to get involved as his Father is an Anglican Minister, and also had strict Conservative views against fathering a child before wedlock. If Rev. Stephen McKay's congregation found out that his teen son, Shane, fathered a child before marriage, he could easily lose his job.

My Junior High/High School experience was NOTHING like Degrassi. The upper grades never tormented or even "hated" the lower grades. When we were in 7th grade we knew all the 8th and 9th graders from years earlier when we had been in elementary school with them and they liked us and we liked them. The kids at Degrassi act like they don't even KNOW the underclassmen! When I was in 8th grade we welcomed the 7th graders because we were friends with all of them. They were only one year younger! Same with high school. When we entered high school most of the Juniors and Seniors were excited to have us since we hadn't been in the same school for a while. There was never any "Don't talk to me you 9th grader!" You could be friends with anyone regardless of what grade they were in.

Arthur Kobalewscuy truly doesn't learn from his life experiences as Joey Jeremiah hazed him on his first day of Grade 7, and now he does the same thing to Bartholomew Bond. Since Arthur was a victim of hazing on his first day of Grade 7, he should know better than that. Derek Wheeler also doesn't learn from his experiences as a drunk driver kills his parents, and then he gets drunk behind the wheel which kills a child and injures Lucy Fernandez during School's Out.
