what a beautiful stone that turned out to be! i've cleaned a few using just water or water and dawn and a scotchbrite pad but if i saw one starting to look like that i'd def give it the full treatment!

So I've got an old stone I have been trying to clean up and I picked up some of that dawn degreaser today. I use simple green for a lot of tool cleaning and such already but this stuff looked great. I also noticed while at lowes that simple green does make a purple degreaser too but they didn't have any small bottles to try, only a $15+ jug of concentrate. So I took the dawn for just over $6

Nice video! I've been using soapy water for the last 6 months as a lubricant. Used Dawn dish soap to clean up my diamond plates when switching from oil. I am looking forward to picking up Arkansas stones like you use. Thanks again for the video. : )

That is pretty impressive stuff ! Unfortunately we can't get that product this side of the pond [UK]. I get great results with 'Elbow Grease all purpose degreaser' and just found out they do a heavy duty degreaser too, so have ordered a few bottles of that to give it a try. I have a really gummed up stone with a great chip out of one end and am tempted to hot dip with that, then cut the end off and see how deep the cleaning goes after a few days, not that it matters that much, provided it's cleaned deep enough to work well. Thanks for the videos, you've got me fired up to get some work done.

I still have a couple of gallons of purple power but may still need the dawn degreaser. I suggest you follow Chris's formulation closely. I made a mistake of using full strength Purple Power and the combination stone separated into two!!

I've used this stuff around the house a bit. And it's been doing great. Sprayed some on a stainless steel sink and scrubbed it, made it look new again.

Holy hell that was fast. Definitely gotta go and pick up a bottle of the dawn. I have a little translucent stone I got last year that could definitely use a cleaning. It works very well and gives a very good edge on my plane iron, but it won't hurt to give it a cleaning.

Super, Chris.....I always get high-speed back on the 18th....which is why I waited. That purple stuff was awesome (It did say "Dawn" on it, huh?). I'd been using Simple Green. This is a GREAT example of the empirical method of figuring things out. I'll try to quote Thomas Edison...very roughly and paraphrased.....who said, "I'm NOT a failure.....I have learned an immense amount from 10,000 mistakes!" And, if you recall, he invented a lot of shit that changed the world. There is ABSOLUTELY NOTHING wrong with saying, "Hey, Guys.....I found something better!" It should be applauded and respected! This video was Rough Rooster at his best......the TEACHER!

Good stuff man. Keep it going, you should do a flee market video. Where you get sharpening set. Then bring the stones back to working condition.

@ninjacow634 жыл бұрын
It would be like shopping, for stones on a budget. You could also teach us, what you look for when buying stones. That’s also a good idea. I didn’t think of that. I can also send you some of my flee market finds. I can’t really hand sharpen due to recent injury. No sense in letting the stones go to waste.

@bobclifton80214 жыл бұрын
Have you ever tried Greased Lightning? I use that on my table saw blades when they get covered with half burned resin build up. I spray this stuff on and you can see the resin lift up off the saw blade. It's that quick. No boiling water necessary either. With your extensive experience with degreasing solutions you may have already tried it but I thought I'd mention it just in case.

I just picked up a vintage Norton Arkansas stone and cleaned it up with the your method in your previous video with purple power. It cleaned that stone up really well and it looks like a weird mix between a black and a translucent. Whatever it is that some put a real nice finish on my Thiers Issard straight razor which is normally a pain to hone. When I run out of purple power maybe I'll try out the dawn next. Thanks for the videos on this stuff as I've got a real nice stone from it

I would bet ether would be one of the best solvents ! I would also think ! I soak and do a resurface job and your stone is as good as itr will ever be ! I am speaking of the stones made of silicon carbide stones that are called by the trade names crystolon and carborundum ! a A oil stone really ought to be used with oil and be put in a box after use ! A oil stone can become clogged up by dust ! Least this what the manufacturers say or have said in the past ! They would be carborundum pike norton Yes I love crystolon and carborundum oil stones ! Believe it or not our ancestors knew everything there is to know about sharpening steel We in modern times know too much, Most what we know is jumbled up and inaccurate!
