So how screwed am I if I try to maintain my two new Kershaw skinning knives (in D2) with my Spyderco Sharpmaker?

@@MimeswithRhymes why not just sharpen it on the edge pro?
@MimeswithRhymes2 күн бұрын
@ I will, initially, to get an edge that will work well with the 40/30° angles of the Sharpmaker. It takes ages to profile an edge, but is real good at bringing an edge back. Hearing you describe D2 had me wondering if the ceramic spyderco rods could handle the job or if I’d just be chasing the bur around.
@roughroosterknifesharpenin55312 күн бұрын
@MimeswithRhymes okay so in my opinion ceramics aren't very good on D2 steel. Reason being is because D2 is a very old tool still I believe it was developed in the '70s and it has very large carbides in it. The large carbides do not like to be polished That's the reason D2 perform so well with a toothy edge. But if you know what you're doing you can polish it given time and patience.

What size are those 3 or 4 inch long?
@KyleEdwards-rl5xt8 күн бұрын
Good call with the soapy water. S110v and alot of other tool steels contain cobalt. Cobalt is obviously pretty toxic when in a fine dust particle. I've sharpened s110v once without soapy water and could tell I inhaled airborne particle. It made my skin have a minor noticeable effect. The moral of the story know the composition of your steels and take a safe approach. Cobalt is quite toxic and most toxic and harmful in a dust particle.

I like the coarse India stone. I also like the game of seeing how sharp I can get a knife, a chisel or a plane iron on a coarse stone. For most of what I do shaving sharp is enough, so the coarse india stone became my one stone setup for when I´m not in my workshop.

That rough spot on your stone is contamination caused by a larger piece of diamond than there should be. Those will scratch your knives. The pieces should all be of the same size and distributed evenly.

The steel is pretty soft in my experience and really not an edge holder but definitely takes an edge.

Glad to see a Crystolon video. I love my fancy resin bonded diamond stones, but I'm enjoying the idea of having a nice simple setup to mess around with. I'm thinking of challenging myself to stick with a 2x6 Crystolon and a strop for a month or so. See how good I can get by with a minimalist setup.

I appreciate the compliments, sir. It's taken years of practicing every day and watching lots of RRKS videos to get where I am. I'll have to see what I have in the way of supplies. I can probably throw a few strops together if there is any interest. 8-9oz tooling leather on an 1.5" aluminum backer. There's a lot of life in one of those strops.

Good to see you back! King brand waterstones are great stones at their price point. Sharp pebble that blue and white one are the chinese made amazon garbage. From what ive heard they work but are too expensive for their performance and they dish very quickly. So they're not good for beginners due to how fast they wear and they're not good for epxerienced people because theres so much better out there for only a little bit more money.
