Thanks for the run in groove sound samples! I ordered a Degritter MkII a few days ago. I’ve been using two Spin Clean tanks and a cheap vacuum unit up until now. I’ve been buying a lot of expensive vinyl this past year and decided to buy the Degritter by paying over 6 months no interest. I plan on setting it up in my music room like you. It’s a nice looking device. Does it cost too much? Hell yeah.

This seams like a great albeit expensive machine. I have the Humminguru and I'm quite happy with it. Yes, you have to fill the tank yourself but it's not too much trouble (one guy did make a mod for it to refill the tank automatically, search it up on google, but I found it quite cumbersome and complex to do). I only use distilled water in my Humminguru and so far I don't see the need to add anything. I didn't experience the water issues you were mentioning (x2 cycle dry works like a charm for me) Humminguru also sells a solution to add to the tank but I find it surprising that they don't include the solution with the machine. And in the literature that comes with it, if memory serves well, they mention to use only distilled water. Maybe I'll try one day but I might want to do a rinse afterwards if I do (good thing I ordered an extra tank from HG) I did notice though, that with some records, it has an issue where the record doesn't rotate. Main example: Animals 2018 remix box set. Which is not a great pressing I found. 3 copies, none of the records would spin in the machine unless I would gently push the edge on one side. Had the same issue with another record that had a little protrusion on the edge.. every time it would go down it will stay stuck. Again a gentle push on the side would fix it until it went down again. So far, I cleaned close to 80 records and only had those 2 problems. I do make sure now that the record is spinning before I leave the machine unattended, just in case Even if you have a Degritter or (the holy grail) a KL Audio ($7k++), do not put dirty records in there. Ultrasonic cleaning will not take care of oils, fingerprints etc. If you have a dirty record, prewash it by hand first then run it in the ultrasonic cleaner. Little off topic or side note: anyone has/uses the Humminguru S-DUO ultrasonic stylus cleaner? I got one at the same time I ordered my machines spares from Hong Kong since it was reasonable and no extra shipping costs. I have no complaints so far apart the battery life. But I'm curious to know if anyone else is using it as there are no reviews (to my knowledge at this time) available. Thank you for another great review.

Thanks so much for the detailed comment here. The price will undoubtedly be a deal breaker for many, I completely get that. And I suppose I am talking from a privileged position where I am sent these things (HumminGuru included) for review. That said, I have been sent products that I just wholeheartedly could not recommend, and I often get emails from suppliers in China offering to send me things that I would never be able to recommend on this channel. I think the HumminGuru does a superb job for the price that it is. (Interesting mod, by the way, I will look that up!) I definitely won't be getting rid of the Pro-Ject VCM either, for the very reason you state about very stubborn fingerprints, oils etc. I had that exact issue when reviewing the HimminGuru. I'd love to check out the S-DUO by the way. All in good time - glad to hear you found it works well, albeit with limited battery life. Thanks again for your time commenting. Enjoy the music!

That's really weird. I also had a rotation issue with Pink Floyd Animals, but it was my original copy that wouldn't spin in the HummingGuru. The 2018 box set and the standalone worked fine. But now you have me doubting my memory, so I will give them a try later.

Very important. AI audio intelligent has released a concentrated enzyme formula for ultrasonic machines that doesn’t foam up. It’s a one of a kind formula with enzymes that work to lift dirt, grime, grease etc but doesn’t foam and never needs a rinse after the machine runs. Huge game changer. I have been using it and tossed out my surfactants as a result since they all created foam.

Good review and video. However, I've had nothing but AMAZING results with the HumminGuru + G Sonic. I personally haven't had issues with water temperature―the HumminGuru's reduced ultrasonic power might be the reason why the water doesn't get too hot with subsequent cleanings and why the Degritter requires a cooling mechanism. Worth pointing out that even if you need a second clean cycle, you're still pressing buttons and letting the machine do the thing (apart from having to manually dump the water back into the reservoir). No doubt the Degritter is a beast, but justifying an extra $3,000 is going to be very, very, very difficult. Having the machine automatically deal with the water instead of manually dumping the water into the reservoir isn't really worth an extra $3K IMO, and that seems to be the biggest quality of life feature the Degritter truly gets you. Everything else, like the cooling mechanism, seem like features that were put in place as a way to remedy potential issues caused by the higher ultrasonic power. Just my two cents!

And as you can hear, the HumminGuru did perform well with the G Sonic on the Rod Stewart record (love the guys at GrooveWasher). Absolutely they are both great products in their price brackets! Pros and cons to each. Happy spinning!

Whatever I use is the best in (my) world. I “wash” first in my SpinClean using a 50/50 mix of distilled water and Simple Green, spray rinse, and wipe with microfiber. Then a deep cycle on the HumminGuru Nova. (works great on the really dirty vintage). A new purchase gets the Nova clean only. “It sounds like bacon smells”, Bonnie Raitt described her vintage 1965 Stratocaster. ☮

Hi Mark, I agree with you that the Degritter is the best commercially available ultrasonic unit available at the present time. The reason that the Degritter works better than any other machine out there is because it is the only unit that is purposely designed for this purpose that uses 120khz as its frequency. All other purpose built units use 35 to 49khz frequency, the reason being the cost of the 120khz transducers. 90% of all ultrasonic units built for all industries use 35 to 40khz frequency therefore those frequencies have a much larger market than all other frequencies combined. 120khz results in finer, smaller cavitation bubbles that get deeper into the groove thus giving the record a deeper clean. My concern with the Humminguru is the same as Vinyl Attack's, thit is not a full power ultrasonic unit. The Degritter is absolutely ridiculous in price. I don't have one at all, a friend of mine does, we tested it against the Humminguru, yes it was much better. Here in Australia the Degritter Mk.11 with extra tank and size adaptors cost about $5,700aud about 3,000 pounds. Overpriced and my friends Mk.1 unit has not been reliable. I use a 10litre multi frequency tank unit (40/80/122khz) which i have tested against the degritter and its results are the same as the Degritter without the high price tag, but does not dry of course, but i can have three of my units for one Degritter here. Enjoy the music.

Excellent contribution Peter, much appreciated. Indeed it is expensive. Absolutely worth highlighting that about the 120KHz frequency. I should’ve mentioned the cavitation bubble size in the review really. It makes all the difference and the results are definitely better than the HunminGuru as you say, and I found also. 60w and much lower frequency. It does get some results, but nowhere near the Degritter. I’ve seen some of these adaptors over ultrasonic tanks. (A company called “cleaner vinyl” makes one if I recall? Nice to hear yours has a high frequency tank. Sounds like a great affordable alternative! Also, I think Cleaner Vinyl make a drying fan too? Thanks so much for your contribution and comment. Keep spinning! 🎶🎧

Hi Peter, could you tell me which tank unit you ended up buying ?
@peterrech2307
@peterrech2307 7 ай бұрын
@@FrenchMod initially bought a 40/80/122khz Chinese 10litre tank unit. Scrapped it though because of reliability problems. I am now in process of having my own 25litre tanks made which allow 15 LPs to be carried with a spacing of 2 inches allowing for better cavitation. I am using 40/80khz transducers on one tank then a second tank with 122khz/220khz transducers in it and timers to switch between frequencies. Using 6 multi frequency transducers per tank. will look at doing a video for it when done. I did look at using Elma tanks from Germany but also rather expensive and as typical of Germany companies they would not build the unit to my design.
@FrenchMod
@FrenchMod 7 ай бұрын
@@peterrech2307 Thanks for your answer. I'm looking myself to buy an ultrasonic cleaner, I do want to be able to switch between 40 and 80kHz (and ideally 120 also). I was looking at those chinese tanks + vinyl adapter (not gonna need to clean more than 1-3 7" or 12" at once). You don't recommend these ? Or are there any reliable options for less than $500 ?
@peterrech2307
@peterrech2307 7 ай бұрын
@@FrenchMod I have not seen a multi-frequency unit under $500. The reason is because multi frequency or higher frequency transducers are far more expensive than the 40khz ones because 40khz is the ultrasonic industry standard. My unit will cost almost what a Degritter does but it is a higher frequency and more records at once. I am building it for myself because I have around 15,000+ LPs to clean. In the around $500 range the Humminguru unit is not bad but it is only 40khz and to start modifying it to multi frequency could be problematic and difficult let alone destroying any warranty it has. I am going as high as 220khz because the cavitation bubbles at this frequency is 4 microns and the record grooves are 6 microns thus the 220khz frequency cavitation gets to the bottom of the groove giving a much better cleaning effect than the lower frequencies. The Chinese units become fragile if worked to hard, the unit I used was worked to death during testing of the frequency switching. The one i do not recommend is the Vevor unit, nearly electrocuted me then caught fire. I have no trust in the Chinese tank units if they are worked hard. 40lhz will do the job adequately. The KLaudio unit which is considered one of the best uses 40khz. I unfortunately am chasing the ultimate in cleaning and never settle for less than I want.

IME picture discs are generally irredeemable. Nice to look at but noisy and all the cleaning in the world won't fix that. There's a guy on ebay who cleans records with a Degritter - for a fiver a pop - so you can try but I strongly suspect it won't make an appreciable difference.

I've just watched a comparison video with audio samples including sound wave charts using a Spin Clean VS the HumminGuru VS the Degritter and the differences were hardly impressive. The test records started on the Spin Clean and ended on the Degritter. You would think by the time the same test records where run through the Degritter there would be hardly no surface noise or clicks etc...nope, the records sounded basically the same. So for a Spin Clean at $80 VS a Degritter at $4500 (Canadian Dollars) I would say for most stick with the Spin Clean or the HumminGuru and save your thousands for more records.
@soundmatters

These before and after tests are always tricky. There are so many variables. Unless you are able to take the exact same record, with exactly the same kind of muck and dirt, and duplicate it, you'll never get a true A/B. The Spin Clean is a great affordable bulk cleaner BTW - I rate it for what it costs.

Glad to see an inexpensive Ultrasonic in the DeGritter. I have had a KLaudio CDP Ultrasonic since 2013. It has been an excellent machine and has done over 5.000 lps. The records come out perfectly dry. That Huming Guru wash basin looks a bit finicky . The KAudio continuously spins not the back and forth rotation like the Degritter . I also have a nice silencer option. Have you run a colored vinyl record through it multi times to look for residue?

I find the whole idea of having to pay £500 (or £3000!!) just to clean your records when this was never necessary back in the day, ridiculous. However, I am sick of loud clicks and crackles on so much new vinyl (I only buy new vinyl) and I feel like I've been bullied into finding the £500 to buy the HumminGuru, which I took delivery of yesterday. My worst albums for crackles and clicks, which make the albums virtually unlistenable, are ABBA's "Voyage", The Ruts "The Crack", Mike Oldfield's "Tubular Bells (2018 grey vinyl edition)" and Tom Odell's "Best Day of My Life". Commentators convinced me that cleaning these with an ultrasonic cleaner would make them sound much better, even though they were brand new and sealed when purchased. So I spent most of yesterday "deep" cleaning them with HumminGuru's own recommended cleaning fluid (not included with the original hardware) added to the water (2-3 drops as advised). The diffrence in audio quality is not really discernible. The loud clicks and crackles are still all there. This has turned out to be a terrible investment and waste of money. I also have a "listenable" Elton John "Tumbleweed Connection" vinyl reissue (green vinyl from 2020) that was mint and sounds great apart from three bursts of crackle on the last two tracks on Side 1. I put that through the cleaner too. No change whatsoever. It turns out a shitty modern pressing is just that - a shitty modern pressing, and no ultrasonic cleaner can fix that. I feel like I totally wasted my money on getting an expensive cleaner, especially when my local record store offers a "£2 a disc" cleaning service anyway. Nothing against the HumminGuru per se - it's an elegant design and seems to go through its processes quite well. But I've bought hardware that is clearly intended for people with dirty records, not those who buy new, use poly-lined sleeves on all their purchases and generally look after them.
@soundmatters
@soundmatters Жыл бұрын
Sadly, if it's the pressing and not dirt, then no amount of cleaning will fix that. Sometimes, though, new records do benefit from a clean to remove any contaminants from the manufacturing process, including paper sleeve flakes and release agent from the pressing process. I'm sure the HumminGuru will come in handy for some records, and if you ever feel like buying vintage records, you're all set now with a cleaning machine. In any case, happy listening!

Yes probably in the pressing but the vinyl grooves are deep and not all cartridges play at the same depth. I've read 100's of cartridge reviews and its often mentioned how some cartridges ( really stylus shapes of which there are quite a few) seem to handle the grooves in the deeper area that do not have as much or any crackles and pops. My Sumiko blackbird is pretty forgiving in that regard but it's not very expensive and still has original stylus after 15 years. I'm calculating 2000 hrs. I had it repaired 5 years ago by VAS and Steve would not let me talk him into replacing the stylus. He tightened the suspension and tested it and it was higher than original spec in channel separation and sent me a photo of the test results. I wish I had of kept track of those cartridges in the reviews that were better at tracing the grooves when I eventually buy one in a higher price range.

The Degritter is undoubtedly nicer to use, less hard work, and much quieter. But then the price is much higher. Ultrasonic is great at cleaning in the groove but it's not always the best approach for removing finger prints. Overall, the Degritter is the best performer, but that's not to say you can't get very close with the Pro-Ject VC, you just might have to work a little harder and be OK with a noisier machine.

I have an Ortofon Blue, yet would not consider getting the Degritter for that price. BTW, manually cleaning records using the steps laid out by "Precision Aqueous Cleaning of Vinyl Records-3rd Edition" by Neil Antin. It is a free pdf and the results for me are amazing. No need for an ultrasonic if you are willing to do manual cleaning. Weird, I find it fun.

Degritter more audio elitism at 2500GBP.. Some ubers have said it is no better than spincleen.. Surface noise no better

As an owner of both a Mk1 and up until recently, a spin clean and Kirmuss machine, I’ll say the spin clean is a good value but isn’t anywhere near as convenient or effective. The Kirmuss is very good but it’s more of a hassle to use unless you’re dedicating time to clean a large number of records. The Kirmuss can do multiple records and has a much larger water volume than the Degritter, meaning the water temp heats up more slowly. The Kirmuss and machines like it are loud. It’s difficult to be in the same room unless you wear ear protection. The Degritter is straightforward. Drop in a record, start the machine and come back in 12 minutes or so. This makes cleaning newly acquired records a quick and easy process unless you’re going to use two water tanks and a surfactant/rinse process.

@@ChrisMag100 It's not a performative issue.. Degritter made no difference on pops and clicks... The records were tested bfor and after using computer softerware.. Not subjective salesmen telling us its better. No noise cancellation.. The video is on utbe

@@matthewtaylor7355in life anything can be biased. Get a damaged record and there's no way to make it better with cleaning, whatever cleaning that might be. The claim that absolutely any record would be better is obviously not true. On the other hand, get a dirty record and the improvement is quite obvious (even with software based comparison as sometimes these records get to be ripped to DSD). There's also a matter of procedure, but I won't get into it. I could show whatever I would want and make people believe any of the two. Because it's possible. Been seeing hundreds of records and rarely there's no improvement, but it is possible nonetheless. Also, unfortunately, even a quality industry standard machine would be about the same price if ultrasonic capabilities are around 80-120, not to mention the extra gear. So this method is very expensive business that would pay for itself over a very long period of time and, most importantly, many records later. It is what it is, options are available, people can pick whatever side and go with it. Bottom line, nothing beats this application even if it won't fix broken things (or not being as straightforward as it is believed to be as I've seen results often enough only after an initial cleaning with ~40kHz that Degritter can't actually do and the other way around with different products that won't go higher and all just adds to the final price, making it stupid expensive for a home user no matter how anyone would look at it).

Great commercial with little actual value to backup the claim it is the 'best' vynl record cleaner. however.. it is the most expensive marketing hyped product that is NO BETTER than an ebay or amazon no name ultrasonic cleaner for about 100$.

This is for wealthy audiophiles pervs. Totaly over priced. Of course the built quality is super good, but you can have good results hand cleaning and if you don’t have time for this cheaper machines as humming guru. If you can deal with minimum scratch and plocs go to streaming and flac files!
