My view: if you’re buying designer goods, they should be of high quality. Many brands charge high prices but use low quality materials or sweatshop labor (see Dior). Another pet peeve of mine is the brand name/logo being all over the bag. I’m not a billboard!!!
@davidpachecogarcia
@davidpachecogarcia Ай бұрын
Designer items are more about giving you something that is unique or straying away from the more regular items. This doesn’t equate to high quality…unless the designer has focused on that aspect to design around. The LV canvas they use in a lot of their bags was created to withstand the elements better than leather. However, today, I’m pretty sure they’ve cheapened on the cotton quality which is why it feels so flimsy now. This is a bother conversation on how the owner of LV is trying to make even more profits off of the many brands they own.

"the brand name/logo being all over the bag" One thing i noticed long ago the 'cheaper' the item, the more branding that is on the item. The most expensive items have practically no branding on them. The items with brand name/logo all over them are for insecure people.

Funny enough, selling my entire bank and buying an expensive cosmetic item on RuneScape when I was a middle schooler de-influenced me from status symbols. I bought it, I wore it, but I couldn’t do anything with it. It didn’t make me better at fighting or skilling, which is the whole point of the game. With that lesson learned, I sold it and never bought any overpriced vanity item in-game or irl.

I do enjoy designer, but it is something I save for and treat myself to on special occasions. When it comes to designer I only consider if it is good quality and functional for my life. I have an all leather Marc Jacob’s tote, and it’s so durable and the leather is great quality but I understand people not liking it because of the print. But they are truly good quality bags and actually not a bad price for full leather.

It’s totally okay to reward yourself! I used to do the same, and grew up for years wanting a luxury bag. No-one in my family or immediate circle has them and I rarely use ig or tik tok so it was purely for my own interest. If you are still saving, investing and handling bills it’s fine to treat yourself!

I'd be interested to hear what expensive purchases you DO think are worthwhile. The only thing I'll buy that's really expensive are coats, because having an actually wool, well structured coat to me is a worthwhile investment - the raw materials to be good quality cost a lot, it lasts a lifetime if you look after it, and in autumn/winter I will wear it literally every day. But if buying first hand now it is hard to get a good quality 100% wool coat that (not even accounting for cashmere etc) is also lined for anything less than 500 pounds (uk) and up to 1000 is standard. Of course, there are second hand options, but people tend to hang on to their good quality coats and they can be hard to find. Other good quality clothing such as structured suits can have this issue. Is it better to invest that much upfront for something that keeps you healthy, and also that you enjoy, or better to buy cheaper coats every few years? Of luxury fashion brands coats are one of the few things that do seem to be actually better quality, I'm thinking for example Max Mara.

Well it’s defo true that in some of luxury is just a cash grab. Especially small leather goods. But for the best craftsmanship you can find… it makes sense to me. I’m an embroidery artist and get the time and skill that goes into making certain luxurie items. That’s basically how those houses started in the first place. By artisans who were really good at their craft wanting to the best job they could. But you know today it’s a bit different. Some items are worth it, but some…. are absolutely not. Just use common sense I say.

I saw him struggling to pick between 2 luxury watch brands that are basically worth a large rent payment. He claimed that his dad could afford tons of Ferraris, so he wanted to get him something that would be special. A few things I'll add as a watch collector who has been into the hobby for most of my life: it's a common misconception that watch collecting is a rich man's hobby. Sure, there are those seven-or-eight-figure watches you’ll see on the wrists of celebrities or members of the Saudi Arabian royal family, but the reality is that 90% of collectors are in it for reasons beyond just brand names or impressing others. To say that watches are purely for flexing is a bit of a near sighted judgement because honestly, in any room you walk into, maybe 1 in 100 people will ever notice your watch. Most other collectors like myself I know are desk jockeys who work 9-5, and we always put a lot of thought into each purchase because these things cost a lot of money! Really, there's different reasons for everyone, but for me, watches are the perfect blend of mechanical engineering and art. It feels like wearing a piece of art and history on my wrist rather than just jewelry. Plus, there's the added bonus that these can be liquidated anytime and anywhere in the world if you need to.

Exactly, I think like everything if you aren’t buying it for yourself and yourself only the purchase is flawed. I always strike up conversations when I spot somebody with an interesting watch and it’s becoming increasingly a thing that they have no clue what they are wearing/go straight in with the price! Just yesterday I was in the pub and pointed out a guys seamaster, mentioned it to him and the first thing he said was how much it cost him.. why does that matter? I’m a designer and I love designer items because they offer something you can’t get anywhere else. I appreciate the detailing or use of higher quality materials. With that being said majority of the items that are labeled “designer” or “luxury” do not fall into this category. Especially at most malls you can drive to in the USA. The horror to see the quality and faulty stitching at Gucci or LV pieces and they’re charging several hundreds or thousands for subpar products that frankly have not been innovated in decades!!! ☠️☠️☠️ Robbery !I also do not follow any fashion influencer because they’re peddling mediocrity when it comes to buying products. They don’t criticize these bad business practices or products. Also, I never buy anything to try to impress someone. I’m the one trying to impress myself. Which sadly for my designer sensibilities but great for my wallet is def lacking with so much overpriced trash being put out at so many brands.

Oh, finally someone mentioned it. Those mini bags are so silly because the profit margins are way, way higher. I don't understand it. One time, I bought a wallet-I think it was in 2011, though I don't remember for sure. It was made of real leather, but it was brandless. I think I paid $20 for it. I only replaced that wallet because I got bored; I used it for almost seven or eight years, and it was still in pristine condition. It was still amazing. The leather had a pattern similar to Bottega Veneta, but it wasn't a fake-it just had a similar style without any branding. I'm also using for around 4 years a drawstring bag that I paid $7.99 for, and I basically wear it every day. The bag is fine-it's made of thick fabric from Timberland, which I bought at TK Maxx. It's so practical and convenient. I just don't understand how someone can justify spending $2,000 or $3,000 on a small piece of leather. It's insane how powerful marketing can be.

One more comment, rolexes in the 4k-10k range tend to hold their value. + Or -1-1.5k. Rolexes are one of the few watches that will last long enough to pass down and have the most recognizability additional when selling, you can usually recoop 80% of the cost depending on how popular that model is. Lol a 1990s datejust cost me 5500 and i sold it back for 5200...its not comparable to lux bag resellers imo.

For the watch thing: for starters, a solid gold Rolex has like $5k-ish worth of raw gold in it plus any gems (so there's that), but also a lot of these high end luxury watches (not Rolex but Patek Philippe) are hard to get a hold of there for they are expensive and appreciate often more annually than the stock market (roughly 20% annually since 2018). So for watches, they can be an investment tool if you can get a hold of the rarer ones. That being said, I agree the prices get insane when you're talking over $10k because you can get a mechanical Swiss chronograph (one of the more complicated standard mechanisms) for under $5k, Tissot makes one for under $2k.

Sure i can claim value retention on my watches, sure i can get back just about what i paid, but i have no idea if those mini bags have value retention... something with throwing stones in glass houses...

The thing with watches, particularly Rolex, is after eating cheesecake for 8 years you’d have nothing, but if you had the Rolex you’d be able to sell it, potentially for a profit. The other part of watches is some people like them even though we don’t need them for time or to be flashy. Some people wear $300 Seiko or $500 micro brands or a $6k Omega that was purchased grey market for $4k and gifted to them and nobody they interact with knows a thing about watches and they probably assume it’s not expensive.

Honestly, I dont think most normal people even buy this things. Most normal people are struggling nowadays, and even if not, like in my case, I still buy something much cheaper, because in today's economy I can't invest my money into a purse. Like I dont think most people will ever own a bag like this, if I look at where I live, it would be stupid of me to even wear it, because nobody has them - or just top tier celebrities. If you live in a small country, live a normal life, I don't think this video is even for you.

While I agree with most of your points, the watch one is where it's just a case of "out of your tax bracket of understanding". Especially when talking about the Patek. And no, I'm not a dude trying to justify his spending habits. I'm a girl from a family/background where collecting such watches is pretty common. Nobody is buying those to 'signal wealth', because they're basically out of reach for anyone who isn't already good with / has a lot of money. I get a lot of comments when I wear a Rolex, because it's so well-known. I get zero comments when I wear a Patek, except by others who are wealthy and know how to spot them. At that level, it's silly to use a compounding interest calculator to justify it as a "silly expense". 30 years of 7%? My mum's Jaeger went from 90k to 170k in a year. A Patek a friend bought for 800k went to 2m in 2 years.

Luxury jewellery is just pointless. Take away the philanthropy argument, let's say you have $3000 set aside for jewellery, go to your local jeweler and you can have something custom made for less with better material not to mention value and sentimentality. You are also supporting an individual small business owner and sole trader as $3000 is literally a month's rent.

The reason why that shape looks familiar on the Van Cleef bracelet is because a lot of luxury brands use it in an effort to be luxuriously different yet similar to others at the same time. Cartier has one similar, and I believe Tory Burch and Tiffany sell something close. Amazon has tons of similarly styled bracelets for a fraction of the price.

Wasn't a fan when I saw it at first but it's one of my favorite work bags because I wanted a tote that was structured, had a zipper and a strap. That said, bags are my thing so I totally get why most people wouldn't purchase it. I also don't buy things based on trendiness and use my stuff even when they're out of style. I think these things are more of an issue when you buy things exclusively because for trends and not because you actually like them.

Watch guy checking in and I just wanna say my take: she’s not wrong. Watches aren’t necessary for life. But to be fair, there are a lot of cheaper options that are just as historical. G Shocks come to mind. Every watch guy loves a G Shock and they can be had for $50 more or less and they are tough as nails. Seiko is another brand that comes to mind. That’s the brand you go with to troll Rolex lovers and remind them of the cheap Japanese brand that nearly sank the wealthy Swiss brands with their cheaper and more accurate watches. If you want a swiss brand for one less zero, go with Tissot. I have a Tissot Le Locle that I got for sub $500 and it’s great. To summarize, all things are great options if you want a watch for cheap but like art, they aren’t necessary for living. You can go without them

Rolex watches are expensive but, if you think about it as a nice jewellery you kinda can justify (well not really but, you get what i mean). Its gonna retain or increase it's value, and it's something that will last your life, it can be passed on the family for many many generations. But it's really expensive and, you can do that with much cheaper watches. I Like mechanical watches because they detach me from the all eletronic world we live nowadays. Don't mix apple watches with mechanical watches 😅. Apple watch will die after 2 years, a mechanical watch will live forever.

Cheesecake huh? For me a bag is not a bag if it cannot hold a whole fried chicken! Definitely not worth it, however cute they are.Also most people addicted to their phones keep them in their hands, not in their bags, so a bag can be tiny. And may I add that I like it when you show what kind of houses you can buy for the price of one watch. I think it illustrates perfectly how ridiculous the luxury items are. One thing that must be mentioned also is the opportunities you lose when you spend your money that way: you can pursue a higher education, afford the living costs to do an unpaid/badly paid internship that will help your career, travel etc.Oh, and yes to part 2 of this video (and generally yes to video from you!)

Even if you want these luxury jewelry pieces and don't want to wear a dupe that is "fake." Find a jeweler who can replicate these items with the SAME materials for way cheaper. This is really common with South Asian families and something I learned after being in a relationship with a woman from there. Her family would go to India and have a jeweler replicate all of the popular bracelets (Just en Clou, Van Cleef bracelets, etc.) with REAL GOLD and they would be more than half of the price of the real thing. They would even bring old pieces they don't want anymore and have them melted down and made into new ones. I originally wanted replicas of my favorite "popular" jewelry when I visited with them, but I actually ended up getting jewelry that was custom made by the jeweler because it was truly unique. Now I have pieces that are HIGHER QUALITY because it's made with 22kt gold and not 14kt "American" gold that is significantly cheaper, still real material, and looks way better and more unique because it's made with almost pure gold.

It depends on the item, but in most cases once you cross the $1000 mark, the diminishing returns on quality, craftsmanship, and materials spike and anything more than that is buying exclusivity and/or the name brand. The exceptions are big ticket items like furniture and appliances. My favorite watch is $150, my most aesthetic/unique watch was $550. I like watches so I can justify the expense for myself here and there, but $10k for an ugly Rolex? Be serious.

I have been fortunate to have some designer clothes and “rich people” toys in my life. The status-driven clothes generally are not worth the money. If someone is being paid to wear that brand it means it is a mass market good (as it’s relying on sales to a wide market through a celebrities wide name recognition). It may not “feel” mass market as it’s “luxury” but the reality is many people can (although they shouldn’t) afford a $300 shirt. Luxury brands are profitable because they sell status symbols to a wide market and act as a gateway to an “exclusive” club/lifestyle. Neither the manufacturer nor the consumer care about the clothes, it is just the cheapest way to signal status (On the order of hundreds of dollars compared to hundreds of thousands with things like cars). It doesn’t really matter who makes the clothes as long as they’re using premium materials. If a brand advertises build quality and premium materials the clothes will fit you better and break in rather than break down. I advocate for buying used on Poshmark or eBay like I do. I have a collection of sweaters from high end brands (usually $800-$500 new) that I paid at most $50.

In my other comment I briefly mentioned cars. They are generally nicer as you pay more. I would rather spend $10,000 more on my car than get out of a $10,000 less-nice car with a Rolex watch on. Both of my parents had Rolex’s in the 90’s and both of them resold them and never bought luxury (or any really) watches since. Why? They’re not worth it and they’re not that functional. Just get a $100-200 watch for formal events and dinners from Seiko, Citizen, or Omega to wear with a suit and call it a day. If you like wearing watches the Apple Watch is fantastic and doubles as a fitness and heath tracker at 1/10-1/20th the cost of a Rolex.

When I visited Florence, we toured the Peruzzi leather goods company. They showed us how things were made, and our tour group got a discount on purchases. I bought a cute small fuchsia purse, very pretty, but I should have known how impractical it is. I’m so not an itty bitty purse person; I usually take the bus, so I need to bring with me whatever I need while I’m out like a water bottle, my phone, a crossword puzzle, some compact shopping bags, etc. The mini bag works for clubbing, but.. oh yeah, I don’t really club 😂 So it’s a bit of a regret, although I don’t think it was too expensive (wish I remembered just how much, but it wouldn’t have been much over $100 I hope). They did have some beautiful silk scarves sold by outdoor vendors, very reasonably priced, wonderful quality, great choice for gifts

Was with you until you said you could have 3,142 chocolate cheesecake slices for the price of one Rolex. Maybe you gotta understand that people have free will and different people want different things. You want cheesecake, some people want a watch (albeit an expensive one) on their wrists. I used to want to travel, and my best friend said she could buy years of chicken rice for the traveling cost. Well, have your chicken rice. Don't travel ever. As a watch collector, I hear others say all the time about how they don't understand why people still wear (conventional time-only) watches when there are smartphones and smartwatches with thousands of functions. Well, they're also the people who have to replace their Apple watches every few years because they don't last. Meanwhile, the vintage mechanical watches from the 60's and 70's that I bought from the flea market are still running. Yeah the cheapest Rolex isn't cheap, but you don't gotta replace it every damn few years lol. If there's any appeal to conventional watches, it's purely sentimental. There are essays upon essays about parents leaving their children heirloom watches and they're not all Rolexes, in fact a fair number are $20 Timex. Mechanical watches running forever makes them perfect heirlooms. You can't exactly leave behind cheesecake as an heirloom, or even an Apple watch for that matter. I know that people like you think you're just being practical whenever you compare food to accessories (the same way people who wear smartwatches think they're practical), but you're not sentimental. I'd hate to leave you a watch and you just pawn it off to buy cheesecake.

First, we usually spend the money we don´t have in things that we don´t need to pretend to be what we aren´t. When you are young you want to be accepted and when you are an adult you want to feel that you belong to a certain social group (Maslow). That´s ok as long as you don´t destroy the logical structure of expenditures. Second, of course we want to receive the much of what we are paying for, and luxury goods should at least have the higher quality if they have the higher price. Furthermore, the price is not only the object itself, but the buying experience, the brand recognition and the sense of exclusiveness. So you can´t evaluate a luxury good only by one of these factors. Third, from second and given a price high above the cost of a luxury good, my question is: There is a moral concern about paying that much for a useless luxury product? You Cara gave some examples comparing the price of a jewel with thousands of mosquito nets. Why? Are you assuming that the profit of the jewel has not any social value? The owner the company may invest that money in stocks or in an index fund (as you do) and with that money the best companies produce better products and create thousands of jobs. Or let's say that the owner of the jewelry company just buys a luxury yacht. Well, that yacht must be manufactured by somebody, the engines, the electronics, the furniture, the appliances, ...there are many companies with thousands of employees involved in the construction of a luxury yacht. And that yacht needs a crew, needs maintenance, insurance, a marina, coastal services, and pay taxes, and so forth. Money flows, and its driver is not the necessity but the added value that every person put in the economy. In fact, a Starbuck´s latte is far overpriced than a Rolex Submariner watch, and while thousands of Rolex watches are sold every year, millions of lattes are sold every year. The Starsbuck´s ROI is higher than Rolex´s ROI. So, where are we wasting money that could be used to fight starvation? Sorry if I sound harsh. When you act and live if like you are a luxury item, that is something that people notice. Many mediocre people seek in luxury objects the luxury that they are not as a person. Luxury is like the deodorant to cover the "stinkness". BUT in other people, luxury is the external expression of their inner luxury. Thats why there are very cheese luxury products with bigger logos as well as very discreet luxury products. The market satisfies everybody. I do my charity in the form and amount of I want without showing to anybody, and my luxury consume is the clothes that I buy in Hugo Boss which is the maximum luxury expenditure that I can afford under my means, however, I don´t feel that I am a good person giving money to charity and I don´t feel guilty spending 200 usd in a shirt. And I very happy with that. You deserve a Giambatista Valli dress, at least, because you are a luxury person that add value with your financial education.

Honestly with watches, good watches with a history behind them, hand craftsmanship, and a design you love, they are worth the money a lot of the time if you want to mark an important moment in your life, or buy a family heirloom. Depending on the watch they also hold their value really well and if you get a classic design it will be truly timeless (ha puns!) like the Cartier Santos or Tank as two examples. Don't make yourself broke over a watch like that but they are definitely more worth it then other luxury products a lot of the time (more watch puns ha!) But I'm also a watch guy and have been for years now so I'm biased. Personally though, I'd never buy a rolex, I don't like the design or the culture around them, and even though they hold their value, that's not what a watch is to me, it's a little piece of perfect machinery with a heart and soul!

I might disagree in the point of the good watch, but only if you are truly getting a good watch not a luxury status watch. For example a 1k Hamilton watch might last you your entire life for 1k. That´s not waste, considering most people use smartwatches that last 1-2 years and contaminates way more. But Rolex, OMG they only thing they do is raising prices for the same movements as in the 80s. Buying gold and silver is also a good investment overall, it values like 5-6 points above inflation rate, better than your savings account. But don´t buy design that´s dumb.
