These guys WILL be denied further opportunity when their lives are led with bad behavior and not led with disciplined behavior. I understand how this professor feels and so do educators across the nation. This experience that this professor is having isn’t different from the experience of some first grade educators. I know. I have family who are in this line of professional. I hope the professor gives the guys the grade they earned and dismiss them from the class each day they are disruptive. And, if necessary refuse to accept the individuals back into class without them having a scheduled meeting with Coach Prime, their direct coach, the professor, the dean, and the student. I’d suggest each student walk through this fire individually. And, be penalized from both ends of the system if it’s decided to be the best course of action. There ought to be a recourse for threats and or acts of intimidation to anyone in the system including students reporting such acts. Privileges including NILS or starting roles on the team or any other qualifying penalty should the student not exhibit excellent behavior as an academic immediately. I would recommend everything is implemented immediately. This gives instantaneous shift in action for the student. If the student need a tutor to catch up it’s his responsibility to get one. The professor should not pass any athlete who hasn’t produced passing work.

Why is USA not like Europe. In Europe there are training academies where athletes become pro in their late teens. Nobody is forced to go to college when his only dream is to go pro. There is also amateur level and other opportunities to work in the sport you love. Stop selling kids a lie that they need college and learn from the European system.(FYI there is no excuse for failing or not going to class. But the system needs to change)

I whole heartedly agree with your post and that's why you see European and other foreign players take over the NBA and MLB. They don't have to play college they been mastering their craft as a pro since they were teenagers. College sports generate too much money and that will never happen in the US

I don't know as a fact, but I wouldn't be surprised (I taught in the NYC public schools) if athletically talented kids were pushed along in school throughout their education without learning fundamentals- appropriate reading and writing levels etc. Guessing at a college level they might not be able to follow along with what is being taught and cover it up with disrespectful, arrogant and distracting behavior. They should be given tutors to learn basics and break down the subject matter. They possibly feel entitled as they have been treated that way- encouraged to get through school only on athletics, academic ability not enforced...

Nothing new here. My best friend growing up went to Arkansas in the 1980’s. He talked about the “Special Tests” that were given to members of the football team. They would skip class on the days of the tests and would subsequently be given makeup tests that were much easier to pass. Once the other students found this out, they skipped the regular tests, and then had to take the same makeup tests as the football team, making obtaining a good grade much easier.

It isn’t just athletes. Disrespecting teachers is woven into the fabric of American life. I got my butt kicked thousands of times by students who entertained each other by saying “no” in ways that entertained their friends. That’s a big part of the reason for tracking students in high school. Regular classes are really inefficient. It comes down to trust. Kids are saying, “I don’t trust you.” If you hear it that way, you can come back the next day, day after day, and try again.

Simple if they fail any classes they don’t play and can’t even get on the practice field. I guarantee so many teachers pass players who are failing their classes and they shouldn’t have. Because they a star player or they winning games for the school they just turn a blind eye. The schools and colleges need to do what this professor did. Very proud because the school coulda easily just been like we paid all this money for prime just pass the players and if you don’t we might be forced to let you go... Mad respect for coach and the professor

On most D1 campuses the head football coach and head basketball coach are the most powerful people on the campus. Honest truth is the revenue those two programs are bringing in are paying a lot bills and salaries outside of their programs. The coach usually sets the tone in terms of how professors are going to handle their guys in class and most of those guys are going to be pushed to classes where the professor is a friend of the program.

One of Stephen A's best. Until the term student-athlete goes away from professional college sports, part of their job is to go to class and do something viable while going to class. NIL money might be nice...but it will not cover a person long term. Very few are going to make big money in the pros. Either get a degree or master a trade, because without one and/or the other, it will not take long to go from 21 and a bag of money to 25 and homeless.

Didn’t Colorado dumb down their education standards just so these players could attend there. They had to create a general education degree and things like event planning so the football players have something to major in. Deon does not deserve any special recognition for trying to keep his players eligible. No one should be surprised these kids don’t care about going to class and learning anything
