Dejection: An Ode by S.T. Coleridge in Tamil / PG TRB / Bharath Ravindran / Bharath Academy. In this poem Coleridge expresses his philosophy of Nature. It is totally contradictory to his earlier philosophy. Previously he held a belief that Nature is a living whole. It is pervaded by a Divine spirit and man can have a spiritual relationship with it. Nature has a purifying and ennobling effect upon human beings. But now he holds the view that Nature does not have a life of its own. It is we who endow it with our own joy. If we are happy we find Nature in a joyous mood. If we are in a sorrowful state, we find Nature in a mood of melancholy.
