The Meaning of Africa by Abioseh Nicol in tamil / Bharath Ravindran / Bharath Academy. Abioseh Nicol was graaduated from Cambridge university in the Unitedd Kingdom. He earned his Ph.D. in biochemistry. Nicol mentions that for the lonely sons on distant shores, Africa was just a name for which they had shouted freedom. When most of the countries were under the colonial rule of England, Nicol was there. Then slowly the cold sky of Europe disappeared from his mind. Then African markers filled his heart. So he came back to Africa. He was fascinated by the braveness of the new cities. He was asked to go to the hinter lands of Africa to finds its soul. He was disappointed to see the under developed hinter lands. The people were uncaring of the noise of freedom. He was humbled by the poor people taking pride in their humbleness. Nicol ends the poem by calling Africa not a country but a concept. He says that Africa is the only continent made to be loved.
