It is a song about some kolvonts (Hindu dancing girls) who are supposed to dance at the wedding of a man named Damu and have to get across the river in time. There is no sociological or anthropological evidence for the claim that the lyrics of this song have anything to do with conversions or Portuguese brutality or the Inquisition that happened in Goa. On the contrary this song describes the plight of these exploited dancing girls who are willing to even give up their ornaments to the boatman to get across the river in time. Kolvonts were treated quite badly in the caste conscious society of the day.

Then why does the boatman refuse to take them across the river ? What will u explain about the *Hath kapro khamb* at old Goa ?
@mikedesi55134 ай бұрын
@@theaccidentalguitarist9688this song is an allegory experience of people wanting to to escape the Portuguese brutality of conversion it is absolutely sociological reflection of the times as part of Goan history

Why they are not showing any Catholics culture in Goa. Catholics also exist in Goa!!!
@rachel81165 жыл бұрын
Um but thus is also our culture though. It is goan culture, just as the carnival, a Catholic influence is also goan culture. Our culture is already divided enough without the both of you bringing more animosity into it.

Maybe because the original lyrics of this folk song are about a young Hindu girl trying to escape Goa fearing from violent forceful conversion to Christianity by the Portuguese and pleading a boatman for helping her cross the river, to which the boatman is saying No as he fears a brutal punishment from the Portuguese for helping someone escape the conversion. To convince the boatman, she is making an excuse that she wants to attend a wedding, then offers her jewelry as the boat fare, etc. But he is still not convinced (due to the fear). How would you show some Catholics culture in a song/script where the main story is about RUNNING AWAY from Catholics trying to forcefully convert others on gunpoint?
@ketansawant85673 жыл бұрын
@Anthony Menezes this is popular folk song .. exact writer, singer can't be determined of such folk songs but this is popular since many decades probably centuries since the time of portuguese goa, don't trust everything written on wikipedia.
@ketansawant85673 жыл бұрын
@Anthony Menezes even if we agree this was written by a catholic named Farreira, we can't deny the meanings which lies in between the lines. Maybe farreira wrote this in resistance of portuguese bcoz many other dekhni songs are written in resistance of portuguese. Can't argue you if you have any soft corner for portuguese. Peace🙌
