That's real railroading right there. Long hood forward, kicking cars, getting on and off moving equipment, all of it. Great camera and drone work too!

@@Buick_GSX It shows imperfections in the coat, but if you're not running obvious clearcoat, it's not really an issue. In a way, the gloss is what makes keeping a black car looking sweet. Literally everything shows. This is also why silver colored cars are usually the best at hiding imperfections and grime...especially gunmetal (dark) silver.

THANK YOU FOR THE MEMORIES ! Here are a few NS facts that may or may not be known: if you're in the cab, at the Control Stand, you're on the right side of the Locomotive looking at the back of the crossing bell, (so to speak). That's where the F is going to be plastered, as per FRA ruling, the FRONT of the engine has to have an F on each side of the unit by the steps, at Eye Level. So you can know ahead of time which side to be on to switch & flag, so you can be seen from the Engineer's seat. For example, if the crossing bell is mounted on the long hood end, the Engineer's seat is on the right side looking toward the long hood end. That will be where the F is plastered. If the crossing bell is mounted on the short hood end, (not the low nose type with a windshield) the engineer's seat will be on the right side looking toward the short hood end and the F be plastered on that end, at eye level by the right of the steps, just below the walkway end deck. Another fact is the Number Glasses, (located on the ends of the unit.) There are 2 standard sized 60 watt 74 vdc light bulbs behind each one of the Plastic "number glasses." If the background is BLACK, with White numbers, it is a regular unit, but if the background is WHITE with Black numbers, it has Radio Control set-up capabilities, which means it can be placed in as lead unit to control another unit back in the middle of the train. This helps keep from pulling a train into on steep mountains, like Saluda. On it, as soon as you get to the top, you start down the grade on the other side. There's terrible pressures on the knuckles at the crescent of that mountain. From the top view, if you're using a drone, on the long hood end of an EMD unit, if you have 3 cooling fans inline mounted in the top of the Locomotive, at the very end in the long hood end, its going to be an SD (Special Duty), which means each truck is going to have 3 traction motors in it. You can also tell if its an older SD, it it has the grids in the side flutes and there's 2 big fans mounted in the middle of them. There's tons of stuff I COULD put here, but this is enough right now. I don't want to write a book here. I wrote an entire library on everything our rewire shop worked on. It filled 2 big book cases...but that was years ago!

All of the Southern’s ‘38s were air conditioned. The Southern Railway specified in their GP38 orders that they wanted them with air conditioning, likely due to the variety of conditions that they were going to be working in.

The industrial switching sequence at 23:30 for Dawn Foods is excellent - I may just use Dawn as a prototype for a similar industry on my HO scale model railroad. Any idea what comes in those BNSF trough-hatch covered hoppers, versus the ACF Pressureaides and Trinity 5660s? I assume the latter are for bulk flour or sugar delivery, but am unsure about the BNSF grain LO's. Any info on inbound commodities would be great. Thanks!

Interesting video. Probably boring to some because it isn't glamorous, but making trains and kicking cars is a part of the work and those local road shifting jobs keep people employed. I couldn't tell whether the yard had any slope where they were kicking, but I realized that with a drone, and permission, you could get some great shots at a hump yard where getting to where you can see anything is nearly impossible. With the long lens and the drone, sometimes it was almost like standing beside them while they shifted.

So do railroads do this kind of car kicking, shown in the beginning of the video, only in yards that are slightly bowl shaped so the cars naturally will stay in the yard? Also, how do they kick the cars without the brakes automatically setting like in an emergency brake application? Are the car's air brake systems completely drained and only the locomotive break is used in yard switching?

CSX, NS, they all kick cars. Otherwise it would take forever to shift. Some cars, such as TIHC (Toxic Inhalation Hazard) cars or schnabel cars are actually labeled DO NOT KICK on the car & also listed in the equipment operating rules. But... you can do whatever you want as long as you don't get caught ;)

Those old GP38's have Southern written all over them. There would be no need for those nice Tier 4 road engines if it weren't for these guys.
