In May of 1990, Ed Painter made a trip to see his parents in Worthington, Ohio. While on the way there and again on his return trip, he stopped at some of his favorite railfanning locations on Conrail, CSX, and Norfolk Southern lines. Southern Railway 152 is the train that was carrying propane and derailed in Laurel Mississippi in the late 60's, burning that town to the ground.

55:50 That's at C.P. Kinney on the N&W where the connection to the southern is and that building to the east was the old Amtrak station and it's still there as a MOW office. That station is what replaced Union Station and that was demolished in 1967

A bit confused by the comment during the beginning of the video. Those locomotives aren't running long hood forward and it was interesting to hear 2 of the locomotives blowing their horns. I don't think I have ever seen that before. Probably because I don't recall seeing some of the crew in a trailing loco. Great video!

1:03:45 That's the exact spot where 65 freight cars ran away from Montveiw yard and crashed into NS 155 that was tied down sparking a giant chemical fire and evacuation of the area in 1998

Two questions. 1.) Why is there always a crew in the second engine on these trains as well as the lead locomotive? Although possible, I doubt there were that many deadheads happening . 2.) Are the locomotives in the middle of the trains manned or were some of these locos DP capable? I highly doubt they would be.

1. Back then, most railroads had 3 or even 5 man crews. With that many people riding on the head end, the lead unit would often be crammed which is why most of the time, half of the crew would ride in the second unit. 2. The mid-train units, or “Slaves” as Southern/NS called them early on, were equipped with radio control so that they could be operated by the “Master” unit (lead locomotive) on the train. Back then, the radio equipment was too large to fit inside the nose of a locomotive or on top of a cab, so Southern built these special radio boxcars that housed all the gear inside. When the boxcar was MU’d to a mid-train unit, the engineer on the lead locomotive could simply “dial in” on whatever radio frequency the boxcar and mid-train unit were using and control them from the head end. Radio cars go waaaaay back on the Southern… The early 1960s, I believe. Most other railroads came up with creative ways to do DPUs without having to use a boxcar with all the gear inside. Instead, railroads like Santa Fe, Union Pacific, and Southern Pacific would order specific units with “Snoot” or extended noses to house all the radio gear. If you look at pictures of some those locomotives from the 70s-90s, you will see a lot of extra antennas on top of the cab. That’s because of the radio equipment inside the nose of the unit, likely an SD40-2. Also, side note, but back then, the mid-train units were not called DPUs on any railroad. Instead, they were called “Locotrol” Units, named after the type of radio equipment inside it. Hope this helps! Thanks for watching. -Drayton

I am new to rail fanning .why did southern run long hood forward. Was it a nod to the steam engine being so long out front. I grew up with SP being a huge part of my life .my father worked for them and they were part of the life blood of the coastal logging town in Oregon I grew up in
