⚡️Overhead lines carry 25k volts to power electric trains.
⚠️We know delays caused by OLE failures are frustrating and do all we can to minimise them.
🛤🚄 Here's how we get services moving as safely and as quickly as we can.

Wouldn't you just love to have seen those workbots tie the ends of the broken line in a big bow?

Nice explanations. Love the ECR operators. I'll think of them in a new light from now on. 😊

Having watched this, I'm inclined to think that the Third Rail sounds more robust. And yet there is talk of electrifying the Uckfield line with OLE, which just seems ludicrous when the line is in the middle of Third Rail territory.

But third rail is far worse in autumn and winter. And not just that, the energy losses in third rail are huge, and accidents are far more easy.

Network Rail has made a proposal to replace third rail with OHLE on Southern when the equipment is life expired. Most new third rail stock is dual voltage anyway.

Does anyone know why some of the older OLE systems have a third wire in between the top (catenary) and the bottom (contact) wire? What purpose does it serve?

The same thing happened recently on the Durham Coast line with a Class 60 Locomotive, 60047, striking the wires at Sunderland with it's antenna. This is because of the heat at sunderland causing the wires to sag. The wires are used by the Tyne and Wear Metro. You can see exactly what happened by watching this video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/d3aTiX6XgddrjtE The video includes emergency Replacement buses, road/rail equipment and power isolation at sunderland.

Don't have these issues with diesel /electrics as for being greener? That's debatable still need dirty power stations to supply the electricity

Depends on what you're using to generate the electricity really, nuclear and renewables are carbon-free at the point of generation. I do take your point, although I imagine the carbon savings with electrified railway services offset the use of any fossil fired power stations.

Which is why you are continuing on replacing overhead wires that are designed not to sag and can hope with hot temperatures. And yes new Bi-mode trains are the future.

With all the extreme heat we’re going to see more and more of, it’s critical to get battery electric trains into service. And even if the tech for full battery trains isn’t quite possible, a small battery just for getting to the next station to stop a train being stranded would be hugely beneficial. We’re seeing this in Japan already where they have Shinkansen trains that have small battery packs to move slowly and get out of harms way in a natural disaster for example.
