This is SO true. I never really understood anything about how my bike worked, and last weekend I installed a tail tidy. Granted, it was a simple process, but it was my first time and I get such a huge sense of pride every time I see my bike. I'm hooked and can't wait to keep working on my beloved Bonnie!

FYI, long term the ignition switch in that position catches water . Either thrown up by the tire or sitting on the sidestand in the rain . Had the owners bike of the shop i worked in, a Thruxton with this kit and in time the bike would die going down the road , not start after being parked , yes , replaced the Hall sensor ended up taking the back off the ign switch it was as green as grass with corrosion . This was a California bike, not too much rain. Replaced switch but applied silicon sealer to black cover sealed up and a wipe of silicon to the seam as well .

Silicone also around the point the wiring goes in to the switch block.

On another subject, thanks, as I was watching your video, I was pondering a problem I had with a bold that the head was too short to get a spammer on. I remembered a video you did and enlarger the flat sides by grinding them. I got my trusty dreamed out with a cutoff wheel and proceeded to cut the lip off to make the bolt a bit easier to grip.. It worked just like you showed us. I wouldn't have thought about that hadn't I been watching you on the KZbin. Thanks buddy, it worked great and saved me cash... Rsmf

Been thinking about this for my bike this morning funnily enough then this everything this video of yours popped up Delboy. Just received my top notch 60cm speedo yesterday which will eliminate the factory clocks and idiot lights. The relocation of the ignition switch will give it that nice clean look to my GS 500E scrambler 😀 Pity there isn't a purpose made bracket out there so will have to fashion something up, hopfuly it will look the biz. Great video Del x

@Delboy's Garage another great video. Thanks for all the info and walk us through. For anyone wanting to save a bit of $$$. A copy can be found on Ebay. Just do a search for: Triumph Ignition. The copy is near identical to the name brand, and as you may have guessed, about half the price. Be sure to message seller if you want a left or right bracket. I kept mine on the left. Also all the hardware is provided as well. No need to cut the bolts down for the back of the bracket. I was also able to find a LSL headlight bracket for under $60.

Yes I moved all the cables and the plug is hard against the headlight inside. I'm guessing the earlier bikes just had a shorter cable span here. I will look at rewinding the loom back and moving this plug and socket from inside the headlight to under the tank as someone mentioned earlier on here or I'll get a bracket to move it up 2 inches or so there's plenty of room above the current position. Anyway thanks for speedy reply!

I’ve just bought one of these and makes a world of difference, being predominantly right handed I dropped my keys several times trying to put them in the ignition ! Also rather than having an ugly grommet in the hole fit a waterproof 12v socket, you can then use it for accessories usb etc or it makes a handy battery trickle charger point.

I have made some video of simple maintenance, such as replacing brake pads and such. I would love to post them to show people you don't have to be a rocket scientist to work on these bikes. You do a great job of editing, and that's where I have a problem. When I figure out how to edit, I'll post. You and Lunmad explain things very well, and I thank you. BTW, I'm in the states, and your quid, pounds, etc. with the exchange rate......I have to do math. :-) Thanks again, keep them coming.

Great mod and a lovely bit of kit too, well thought through as the wiring sits perfectly. Three keys on the Enfield. Ignition, steering lock and toolbox lock. So now if I want to get the bike out and access the toolbox I have a total of 8 locks to undo! Tool shopping is imminent, making lists and pricing up. Machine Mart ought to be rubbing their hands in anticipation. Any personal suggestions/recommendations for reliable 'house of sticks' tools would be gratefully received! All the best you two! :-)

Hi Peter, meant to chat with you at some point reference security after talking with a buddy of mine at work who has used a mini container as a shed... and disguised it with shiplap... but maybe we'll chat on the phone on that one??? Souljacker is right on tools, Halfords Professional are great and for the high use stuff that you reach for every day then the American equipment is brilliant, not Snap-On, but makes like BluePoint & ViceGrips, I've been beating on my BluePoint stuff for years and can't break them for trying... not only that, they cost half of Snap-On.... it's important cos things like 10mm open-enders invariably stretch wider with time and then you're rounding stuff off. Sealy as well are very good, but it's all about the budget my friend, better to have a cheap tool and improve it later, than not to have it at all.... so comprehensiveness rules! All the best, Del & Pennyx

Thought of another subject while watching this (good fix by the way)...L.E.D, replacement bulbs! are they any good as a headlamp? or even legal? I have fitted a pair in the aux lights on the Harley, they only draw a few hundred mA's so no need for a relay but I have kept the Halogen headlamp for now until I know that the led's are o.k.
@Moonfleet41

Hi mate, an LED for your headlight is called a 'HID Kit'... they need no relays or extra wiring as they plug straight into your existing H4 plug... loads brighter and burn no more current.. !

You're right mate, not only is it the easiest way to batter the paint so having to carry two keys separately, but also it's quite a long reach forward... and if you've got zips on your jacket a small person like Penny, ends up almost laying on the tank to get to it! You don't need a HID light, just a regular halogen bulb in a standard headlight, like the Bonnie one you asked about... if you live in the pitch black countryside, and need more light, you are better off sticking a couple of cree lights low down on the front of the bike connected to the main beam feed for the country lanes...

Del, I ask you this as I have come to have great respect for your opinion in these matters...I bought my 2006 Harley XL1200C Sportster 5 months ago when it had 1600 original miles. I am quite convinced that the woman who sold it to my was completely honest in dealing with me, she had done the 1000 mile service at the dealer and had the paperwork . Anyway after putting another 1600 miles on it, the clutch burned out. No kidding...3200 miles and the clutch crapped out. Turns out, after I towed it to the dealer, the clutch cable was way too tight. The dealer is putting in Screaming Eagle clutch which is supposedly slightly better and cheaper. Still the bill is over $800. Presumably, the clutch adjustment was correct at the 1000 mile service. Any idea how it could have come so far out of adjustment in 2200 miles? Would a too tight clutch cable burn out the clutch plates? By the way, I am a pretty darn conservative rider, if that matters. Any suggestions you make would be greatly appreciated. David Lehrer
@Moonfleet41
@Moonfleet41 8 жыл бұрын
+David Lehrer Hi David, so sorry to hear that mate, what a ball ache... and what a horrible financial kick in the nuts too ! Sadly, I have to tell you that it is entirely possible to burn out a clutch pack if your cable is too tight... it goes a little like this: You have two things to adjust on a clutch... The free play in the clutch pack itself, set by the centre nut at each service and then the Cable that actuates it... And it's completely possible for the clutch pack to be perfectly well adjusted, but if the cable is pulling on it too tight, and you don't have that all important 3mm of free play in the lever, then it's like you are riding down the road with the lever pulled in slightly... This means the clutch plates are not fully pressed together and there's less friction to make them grip each other, and with the huge and legendary torque in a Harley motor, the clutch plates will slip over each other on extreme load.... you may not feel, or detect, this when riding, but it will be a constant slight slipp-age and then it's all downhill from there.... slipping plates then overheat, that causes them to buckle and then they are only touches at various points, not all over... those points become 'hot spots' and it gets even hotter, which will start to break lumps of the soft material .. those lumps become debris, that eventually grinds away between the plates and just destroys the lot...! What does surprise me is the bill - a set of plates, even some upgraded barnett plates, are only about £200 (UK) with a full gasket set, so those guys must have some serious labour charge...! Sorry this has happened for you my friend, all you can do is grit your teeth , get past it, and make sure you ALWAYS have freeplay in the lever... and don't beat yourself up either mate, as it's entirely possible that she could have ridden the clutch whilst using the bike and done ALL the damage before you got the bike... Little used bikes 'one lady owner' lol --- can be more trouble than a heavily used daily commuter sometimes... good luck with it buddy, let us know how you get on, all the best, Del

+Moonfleet41 Del, Thank you so much for your input. I just got the bike back from the dealer. The clutch is as smooth as silk.
