About including this scene on the film: I disagree. The story line does not justify this scene. It is very good, as to provide details surrounding the character of Santino. To justify some rivals siding with John Wick (in the third chapter) against Santino pathway of aggressive expansion. But this line of thought was not clearly exploited in Chapter 2. I guess it is still possible to use this one scene in Chapter 3. To have a flashback of the past, of Santino's actions. To justify some shadow characters siding with John Wick, to assist, to help. As a political move to weaken the crime syndicate lead by Santino. As part of a strategy to gain ground, using John Wick as a mere puppet. To get rid of multiple enemies before he is no longer available. Because it is known, he eventually dies, and the story ends. I sense there is too much John Wick and not enough underground background story. For instance I do remember a character known as: Akoni (by Chukwudi Iwuji, www.imdb.com/title/tt4425200/characters/nm1030244?ref_=ttfc_fc_cl_t28 ). See at: kzbin.info/www/bejne/lZPdaWBnppeZY5Y . I remember seen this character with Santino's sister. Leaving a conversation a little bit angry, feeling offended by the deal imposed by Santino's family. The same character is seen again, presenting his respect to the new head of the family. This side character has seen with his own eyes, how a single man can get rid of the sister and the brother. Sure this small and valuable detail can be taken into account in the story line of Chapter 3. As this character bad feelings towards the Santino family, can be exploited as investment in: John Wick. The more time he is alive, the more bad press gets the Santino family. So it is weakened over time. Just my two cents on the subject.

It strikes me that, for an action movie, John Wick has an extremely odd take on the idea of rules and legacies. The vast majority of action movies--certainly American action movies--would be on Antonio's side. Screw the establishment, rules should be broken, change needs to be sudden and violent. But throughout John Wick, the "heroes" follow and take refuge in the rules and agreements of the past. They firmly hold to legacies and traditions. Winston's line, about how actually, tradition is the friend of progress, is a quietly remarkable line because of how unusual a statement it is to make.

The Organization encourages grace and courtesy in all things, even in assassination. Something Ms. Perkins forgot in the first movie, and Santino does here as well. Chris Weidner rules are rules dude, Winston knows, John knew it. If he made an exception with John then everyone would think they could break the rules every now and again.
@bnadit19496 жыл бұрын
That is a very interesting theory. They only made the contract international so they could purge the assassin world of those who don't follow the rules, and thus pose a threat to those at the High Table. It would make sense to since John is considered the best of the best, they can take out their enemies while also having the side effect of possibly killing off the one man who could kill them.
@Joshkoscho6 жыл бұрын
Bnadit terrible theory. Making his contract international just makes everyone go after him who is to say if they are rule breakers or not. Plus alot of ppl who work for the high table ppl will probably go after him for $7,000,000
@bnadit19496 жыл бұрын
Well anyone with common sense will know that it is pretty much suicide to attempt to kill him, and dirty assassins already have issues with common sense (Perkins) that would make them more likely to go after Wick. Plus if you kill him you'll get a large amount of prestige and those who work for the High Table already have prestige, so while they might get the title of Wick killer they shouldn't take the risk as it would be more dangerous for them than it would be rewarding.
@peoplez1295 жыл бұрын
The Continental has to enforce the rules, otherwise the rules mean nothing and no one will respect them. They can't make exceptions for anyone, otherwise the most powerful people would disregard the rules and make them pointless and destroy the organization. People go to the continental because of the guarantee's it provides. It guarantee's that if someone tries to harm you there, they will be killed....so at the very least your death is avenged. That's a far better deterrence than paying millions of dollars for armed security all the time that could fail to protect you anyways. Let's say Santino had killed Wick in the Continental instead. He would be marked just the same, no way to buy his way out of it no matter how powerful he is. It would mean war. The continental is actually one of the biggest criminal organizations, rivaling that of the people on the High Table, in fact it may even secretly be more powerful than the high table.....and it has way better connections because all of its patrons are criminals. The continental isn't just a hotel either, it's a bank for the criminal underworld. It basically holds a lot of criminal money. So in that regard, if you tried to go after the continental, they have your money and you will never see it again, and they can spend it all to send assassins after you. I mean they literally control a vast assassin network that can be activated at a moments notice. Even the High Table couldn't compete with that. The continental gets away with being soo powerful without fighting the High Table because it provides services they need, and does so without stepping on anyones toes or screwing anyone over.

He knew that for Santino it wasn't about business, he was truly evil and would only bring misery to the world with his rise to the High Table. I mean the guy killed his own sister to gain power....he would kill anyone else too. He also knew that eventually, a rabid dog like Santino would threaten the Continental. I mean he already threatened Winston in the movie near the end when he wanted him to pull Wick's hotel privileges. Santino was trying to threaten the Continental into doing what he wanted. And based on his behavior, if Santino had lived long enough, eventually he would have went tried to have Winston killed just out of spite and take over the Continental. Winston always liked Wick like a son though, he respected Wick because Wick respected the rules, and he knew Wick was a badass. If you notice, when Wick meets with Winston a few times, Winston is never worried that the reason Wick is there is to kill him because he was hired by someone. Everyone else see's Wick, and they know they're marked for death. But not Winston. He trusts Wick. There's a part where Wick comes to the Hotel and tells the man at the desk that he wants to see management, and the guy at the desk asks him "Should I announce you?". What was going on in that scene, is he was asking that to see if Wick wanted to go unannounced because he was there to kill Winston as a hit job. Now of course they would have no reason to suspect that Wick would be hired to kill Winston.....but they deal with assassins all the time, so eventually it could happen where an assassin is hired to kill Winston by someone. The secret of that scene, is that it showed the guy at the desk basically knew that if Wick was there to kill Winston, there was no point in trying to stop him or to alert Winston, because it would just be a death sentence for anyone who got in his way. Of course, I don't think Wick would take a job of killing Winston, he would probably refuse it....but it's just one of those little secret nuggets in the movie that went over a lot of peoples heads.

It's easy to believe Winston was given at least one opportunity to gain a seat at the High Table. But his love is for the New York Continental, as he makes quite clear in 3. He even goes to the length of risking Wick's wrath to that end. Shooting Wick off the roof was a gamble on Winston's part, and we will hopefully see how that plays out. Having ambition doesn't always mean wanting the absolute most, but just having a set goal and wanting to attain that and keep it. The New York Continental was Winston's ambition, and he will do anything to keep it. Accepting a seat at the High Table would mean giving up the NY Continental.

@zenspeed4043 жыл бұрын
The opposite is "tradition is the ally of progress." Traditions aren't just about the rules, but why we create them in the first place: Winston considers the spirit of the rules while Santino takes advantage of the word of the rules. It's why he gave Wick a head start after the end of the movie: the spirit of the rules is that the Continental is, by its very nature, a temporary stay, a reprieve from the brutal life of the Organization, but Santino had no intention of leaving the Continental and was still going to conduct his own business there - like putting out contracts on Wick. Even Winston can see that's just bullshit. Properly considered, tradition slows down the rush to move full speed ahead; if you stick to tradition despite the obvious benefits of moving onto a better way, you stagnate and instead of moving with the times, you're actually moving backward, but if you keep jumping to what's most efficient without using tradition to keep you grounded, you're moving with the flow without any sense of direction.

Then John Wick shoots your dumbass on sacred ground after you ran like a bitch, after you forced him back into a life he gave his life to leave, blew up his house, forced to kill a friend/ your sister only to put you in power, then try to kill him for it to show force instead of just honoring the debt or un9derstanding hes retired not hired killer anymore. Dude...he's a sadistic psychopath. FUCK Satiago for that fucked up chess move. Fuck HIM!!!

And much like the people who say that, Santino didn't mean a damn word of it. He tried to advantage of those very traditions and rules to save his own skin. And he paid for it.

Any guess how much Charlie would've gotten paid for his 10 seconds worth of appearance??

If you refer to the actor, he did get paid, because he did the work. The scene not being a part of the final film does not matter.

Is this after a John Wick killing spree? Because I don’t remember this location

From the remarks about his sister and having to "blow some dust off" I'd say that was Santino purging folks. Possibly from his own organisation.
