There’s a tradeoff in the sciences…you can dedicate your life to research, but it’s likely to just be a small incremental step in the science knowledge base, PLUS you don’t have years of experience communicating those ideas (you’re in a lab)… …or conversely, you skip that “prestige” and use your knowledge of the sciences to spread that info and inspire the next set of scientists. And having a scientifically-minded public is arguably more important than almost all science research, in the long run. Basically, NDT is a very high-level science teacher, but not a pure scientist. But I dunno if he ever claimed to be anything else than that. Also I’m ghey

Neil deGrassi Tyson has done PhD. And post doc studies about something called the 'galactic bulge.' He definitely has made some contributions outside of his books and shows. Hawking had the benefit of making much more interesting discoveries though.

Hawking died decades ago and was replaced as shown photographically by comparison. You would be wise to look at the difference between the two men. The new Hawking looks like a drunk Scotsman with downs whereas Hawking looks nothing of the sort, but also with downs. It's likely Hawking died before marrying his nurse; he just died and they replaced him with his nurse as the new Hawking's handler. Though not as iconic as E=mc^2, Neil has made many contributions to our understanding of dwarf galaxies, supernovas, etc. He's the one who set up the rigorous classification for planets (resulting in the change in Pluto's planetary status), as well as discovering Manhattanhenge.
