Deleting the solenoid on a Walbro carburetor

Most if not all tracts from the mid to late 90's on have a solenoid on the bottom of the carb that prevents a backfire when the engine is shut off. They usually work without issue but can go bad and cost a lot to replace if you don't have a good used spare. This shows how to get rid of it entirely using old parts off a push mower. This applies to Walbro carbs found on Kohler engines but may work on others as well.

this worked great for me. regardless of all the different washers i used, the solenoid was leaking fuel after the engine was started. the leaking fuel would break the circuit and kill the engine, not to mention being a HUGE safety issue. the Briggs bowl and bolt worked like a charm. thanks so much for posting.

Always reduce your engine speed before turning off the ignition. This is especially important if you bypass the carb. solenoid in some fashion. Reducing engine speed before shutting the engine down will help prevent engine backfire. Just repeating instructions from my user manual.

I carb cleanered the carb and selenoid valve and got it working. Thanks a bunch. I'll pick up an in line fuel shut off and neuter the SOB if it causes more grief in the future.

Great job another easy way is remove the rubber plug on the end of the solenoid and cut off or grind off stem,zip tie the wire out of the way and put in a cheap in line gas shut off so when your done mowing put it in neutral set your brake while tractor is idling lift hood turn off gas at in line valve and will burn up the fuel in the carburetor in a few seconds. 👍😎

That way NO FUEL will leak into your Engine during Storage / Winter. They make this Part (Carb Solenoid), to prevent Fuel leaking into Engine if-by Needle, Seal, Float failure or Shut-Off Valve forgotten during Storage or Not-In-Use. Hey.....good vid and I just subscribed but your was your ground from the carb to the chassis of your tractor clean and tight? I had a similar problem on my 20 y.o. john deere kohler and when I carefully took the bowl off, the ground wire just broke off.. and was barely hanging on. I replaced the strap and haven't had a problem with that solenoid since. Just sayin'..............

Inline fuel shutoffs are dirt cheap ( I buy 'em by the bag online) and are very good insurance against carb flooding after deleting the valve portion of the noid. I cut the pins off any engine I get with them.

No one mentioned this, so I will, you should put a fuel shut off valve on after removing the solenoid, and oh yeah idle down the engine first before shutting it off.

if the fuel tank is higher than the engine you must install a manual inline fuel shut off if you delete fuel solenoid and incidentally it is called an anti- afterfire switch which is designed to shut the fuel off and stop the engine from running long after the ignition is shut off . a serious problem especially down south or in high heat condition the engines just simply wont shut down as long as there is fuel still going to the engine even if the ignition is shut off

for those people who have leaking fuel after this just put a fuel shut off on the fuel line and shut the fuel off when not using it I will stop the gas from still flowing through the carb and into the cylinder

I replaced the stock carb on my kohler courage 22 because the original carb had a fuel solenoid problem and it was the same price for a new carb. I just took apart my aftermarket carb that is marked AE power because it was acting the same way. Would run if I put fuel in the carb and then quit. It has a new fuel pump which is working. When I took the solenoid off I found that the pin and magnet were a separate piece inside the solenoid body and slid right out. I'm just going to put it back together without the pin and leave the solenoid coil unplugged. It is almost like it was made to do this. Strange.

i got a 2000 sabre by johnny deere ridin mower with a briggstratton 17ho intek 1 cylinder . was havin fuel supply issues so bought achinese carb off ebay for less than 20 . put it on then on n offtinkerin with the stupid ass solenoid thing trying to get the thing runnin strong . so it startin but when blade engages it stallin out . find out that i dropped the little rubber gasket off the solenoid stem that screws into carb bowl , and soon as i replaced that little gasket started running right . so that little gasket sealin right mattered in my case . and before realizin there was no gasket on it i didnt see any gas leak so ide check just to make sure its there

You'll need to install an inline fuel shut off or gas will continue to fill the carburetor and valves causing hydro lock

Its because the fuel tank is higher than the carb. If you bypass it the fuel can over ride the float needle and flood your engine and cause it to lock up. This has absolutely nothing to do with back firing.

I have a Huskee riding mower from Tractor Supply. It has the chinese engine, not the Briggs. One year old. It dies after just mowing a few feet after it warms up and the blades are engaged. If I disengage the blades, it will start back up and keep running but as soon as I engage the blades, it dies again after going just a few feet. New air filter, new gas filter, new plug, new blades. The only other thing I can think of is the gas solenoid. If that's not it, I'm stuck with a thousand dollar piece of MTD junk.

You might have a safety switch problem. If the safety switch beneath your seat is not working properly the engine will turn off when you engage the blades. On my mower I have to be sitting on the seat for the engine to run with blades engaged.

He did say he can mow a few feet before it shuts off. Likely the solenoid. If you clip the plunger, just make sure you add a fuel shut-off valve so you don't risj flooding the crank case with fuel and take a chance on blowing the motor. (Then remember to get in the habit off shutting off the fuel valve when your not using the mower, even for just a few minutes. Gas in your oil will ruin the engine if you don't catch it before running the engine again. Of course changing the oil all the time if it keeps getting gas in it will soon cost more than just replacing the switch.)

I still lean toward a safety switch malfunction since it runs fine if the blades aren't engaged. I would trouble shoot electrical connections first before I mangled the solenoid not knowing if that is the problem. He should be able to hear the solenoid pulling in and dropping out by turning the ignition switch off and on. Might need a friend to operate the switch while he listens closely to the solenoid.

If you cut the tip of the solenoid won't that continue to leak into the cylinder? Same as a faulty solenoid.

@@TOM-vi5pk no your needle and seat in the carburetor are what does that. A faulty solenoid will not cause gas to leak into the cylinder. If your experiencing that its a defective needle/seat problem. The solenoid only stops fuel when shutting them off to prevent a backfire.

I have had mowers with the shutoff solenoid backfire more than the ones that didn't have it. Some of mine that didn't have it never backfired and ones of mine that did have it would on occasion backfire.

If it's this engine or similar, it's.most likely this fuel solenoid on the carburetor bowl. You should here it click when you turn the key on (not start, just to on position).. if you turn the key off and on repeatedly, you should here it click every time... If there is no click, there is no fuel getting into the carb.

That doesn't always work. I have a 12.5 Kohler command here, actually two of them from John Deere STX38's and it wont work, tried it. Theirs a little nozzle on the side in the threads in the center and if you try turning that briggs main jet nut it, it will crash into that nozzle and wreck it and the main jet wont even go up in all the way. So in that case better check first, because if you wreck that nozzle the carb is than garbage, in that case you have to keep the selonoid snd just clip the end or use it. It was for bench testing purposes, so I'm not cutting it. These tractors are 1993 and back, the earliest ones to have the anti backfire solenoid as far as I know. But ya'll better check before trying this or you will wreck an LMK walbro on a 12.5 Kohler command.

If you find that there is GAS leaking on your RED Wire, then check the Seal on the Solenoid. Or you can get an O-Ring and tighten it from there. It should STOP from leaking... Make yourself a Gasket and just STOP it from leaking. It's a simple fix really :)))

I would install a manual inline shutoff valve to prevent possible gas entering the cylinder and crankcase when disabling the solenoid shutoff. I have dealt with both. Judging from your parts collection, this isn't your first rodeo. You know hydraulic piston lock is not rare with this piss poor carb design. I have seen half a coffee cup of gas trapped in the cyl when the solenoid valve seal leaks and or the float valve in carb bowl leaks slowly. The risks far outweigh the cost of a plastic fuel shutoff [$3]. Some red electricians tape on the steering wheel by the key is a reminder to shut off the valve after use. Especially for most users who are used to the key working to shut off the solenoid valve after use. Some of these modern so called improvements are a step backwards IMHO.

Its not a nut its a short bolt !! 5/16 24 fine thread , they sell a short bolt to fit that . Or just grind the end off the solenoid...its a ain-ti back firing solenoid that you don't even need .

the solenoid is used to stop eng when switch is turned of by removing the 12v that holds the solenoid open a tiny plunger is spring loaded to close fuel flow now so the eng stops its best to set throtle to idel prior to turning switch off that stops any backfire---- the eng will not run unless you remove this tiny plunger from solenoid then it will keep on running this is not recomended

that F**king thing shouldnt cost over 15 buck at the most low end 10 bucks thats Bulls**t.i tried to order the solenoid itself for a Kohler courage 26hp on a Cub LGT 54 like 2yrs ago and was told i have to buy a new carb (that cost $135) cause they dont sell that part by itself i have a Craftsman GT 5000 Excellerator i just picked up i did and oil change, put fresh 91 octane and put a good used battery in it. it only had 117hrs on it (what it says atleast) now i have about 125hrs on it. it started giving me issues like the cub so i knew fuel solenoid and carb clean. it worked but i also replaced the plugs too.

You could just take a pair of wire dikes and nip the pintle off the end of the solenoid. Not as satisfying as your conversion, but no other parts needed.

No you cannot. The solenoid won't open up to let the gas flow into the carburetor and the engine won't run.
