Very cool! Is the reaction between diethylenetriamine and the intermediate phthalimidenanalagous to the product made when hydrazine is used like in Gabriel amine synthesis?

It is in fact an alternative to the Gabriel reaction. Because heating with hydrazine or strong acid or base resulted in β-lactam fission and/or ester cleavage, the authors found that treatment with an excess of diethylenetriamine was effective for the dephthaloylation without harming these fragile functional groups.
