This does makes sense for the locomotives involved in this Derailment. There parts being put on F40PHR locomotives. We all know one of the SDP40F locomotives. Amtrak 644. Which still exist today.

This is wild to see! I was on that train with my parents headed to Thanksgiving at my grandparent’s house in Kansas. I’ve heard stories my whole life about it but it’s very different to see the photos and hear about what happened in hindsight. Can you tell me where I might be able to find copies of some of those photos for our family history? Thank you.

If you look up this wreck on Google, then type in “trainorders” right after, they should be the first two links (you do need an account to view the photos)

Superbaddy4 Can You Tell Me What Was The LIRR 503 Incident What Caused It To Happen?
@superbaddy44 жыл бұрын
An LIRR train headed by DM30AC #503, running within electrified territory, meaning the engine was running in electric mode, struck a shopping cart on the tracks (which no one knows how it got there), which got caught into the Third Rail, caused it to short out, and erupted a gigantic fire which engulfed 503. Fortunately, everyone got out safely. 503 was damaged beyond repair, and was put away to be used as a Part Donor for the rest of the fleet. It was finally scrapped in July 2018 after running out of usable parts.

Irv Hirsch Hello! "For what it's worth", I was a Train Attendant on that train, working the 411 coach, second Hi-Level on the train. I've got a few pictures I took that night...gotta find them. The 409 car(first Hi-Level car) whipped around to almost parallel to side of 411. That's where injuries were. It tore the upper right corner of 411 open and buckled the floor. The lady on that seat had just gotten up to smoke a cigarette a few minutes before! The lights went out in the 409 car, but rest of Hi-Levels stayed lit due to having separate Diesel generators each. The other cars, low level diner and sleepers depended on battery power. All the Hi-Levels derailed along with the low-level diner and lead truck of first sleeper. The bag-dorm transition car tumbled and the locos and dome-sleeper were basically lined up like matchsticks. The still photo of the wreck was taken after the RR had dragged the cars and locos around as they cleaned up the wreck. The RR built a shoefly track to get trains moving again, which the #3 I was riding used on our way back west a few days later. The "hospital" train was lined on the rebuilt main ready to head east. Locos, cars pretty bashed up but ok to roll. I hated to see the sleeper ruined, but if it hadn't been there to take some brunt the accident it would have been worse. Incidentally I think the reason no one knows about this mess was that the big news that day and a little after was Anwar Sadat's visit to Jerusalem! Thank you for posting this. I'm also a wig-wag fan. Worked on the SW Chief for years in different capacities and never noticed it! I had a great 40 year Amtrak career, retiring as a conductor on the Sunset in 2014.
