The story kabuliwala is very close to my heart. I first read it when I was around 10 and it has been my favourite short story since then. My nick name is Mini same as the name of the little girl in the story maybe that's why I could connect to the story a lot. I would love to visit Afganistan one day.

I am a Keralite whose parents' generation grew up reading translations of Russian and Bengali literary works. Kerala being a communist state had close ties with Bengal and Soviet Union. We too grew up reading translations of Russian fairytales and novels along with Bengali literature. When my father was a student the struggle for independence was in full swing and Tagore's works were a great inspiration esp after he won the Nobelfor literature. Particularly popular in Kerala was Tagore's short story "Kabuliwala" which speaks of the deep friendship between a little girl Mini and a vendor from Kabul. My father named me after her. I always feel a sense of nostalgia and belonging when I hear of Kabul, having learnt the whole story by heart.

When British left us after looting, we all got together and started to build our country. I wish that happened with Afghanistan, once foreign forces left them. It's heartbreaking to see Afghanistani suffering especially when our government worked so hard to build their infrastructure. This was a chance for them to progress and strive to succeed as a country.
