'I hate the pity': An Afghan refugee in Delhi thinks of home

In 1990, two-year-old Mohammad Farid Jalil fled #Afghanistan during the civil war. Along with his father, then pregnant mother, and brother, he came to Delhi, where he's lived for over 30 years.
Farid, now 33, is a filmmaker in Delhi. A few years ago, his brother, who works with the Afghan government, moved back to #Kabul with his family. Now, with the country falling into the hands of the #Taliban, Farid and his family in India are worried about his brother's safety. As their helplessness grew, Farid decided for the first time to pick up his camera and document the stories of Afghans in India.
Newslaundry met Farid at the Delhi office of the #UnitedNations High Commission for Refugees, where Afghans have been staging a protest, asking for refugee status. Farid sat down with Newslaundry to explain what home means to him, why he's tired, what it means to be a refugee, and why he now feels the need to record this act of rage and pain from his community.

Just curious, after spending close to 30 years how is he still not eligible for applying citizenship in India through naturalization process. The law says you ought to stay 12 years at a go for this. Can anyone put some inputs on it? I mean Mexico, South korea recently took up well to do Afgans by giving them long term residency permits and these Afgans include the national robotics team and a handful of other intellectuals as well. The result is going just benefit the existing pool of intelligence in the nation.

It's very convenient for us to sit at the comfort of our homes and type out "Afghanistan should stand together and fend for itself rather than being so dependent!" But imagine a situation in which your entire govt is corrupt while a terrorist group is constantly trying to occupy your land, simultaneously being told how to run your system by superpower countries coming in armed into your land. Seeing five headlines of rape, communal hatred and God knows what crimes shatters me to the core realizing how much is to be worked upon in my country and makes me calculate the minor changes I can bring upon myself and on the people around me. Imagine being stolen off that option where your voice is practically insignificant and all you've been doing is crying for help for the past so many years....in all honesty we do not have even a glimpse of their experiences to comment upon their situation. All we can do is respect and realise the stories of the few voices that actually reach us rather than forming opinions based on a few hashtags and shares.

And it is also happening to most muslims in Afghanistan living in cities but does that mean we ought to do the same to our minorities? We have democracy and rule of law. Same here, I am also an afghan refugee residing in New Delhi in India, when I came to India back in 2015 I was 14 years old as of now I'm 20. Just as you have the tag refugee is not so welcoming. And they moment someone sees you as a refugee words that crosses their minds might be, pity, war, danger, alien, outsider, and etc.. Not having valid documents also limits you to extends be it education, travel, legal right or others. The fact that UNHCR is holding a blind eye to the status refugee whiteout providing the humanitarian support is something that we must protest and bring the attention. It's been years they have neglected our rights and were laid back and it will be more more years ahead if we don't raise voice and make them realise that our protest has a valid root and its factual.
