Bihar Mahaparv Chhath Puja, Day 1 - नहाय खाय - Satvik Bhojan कद्दू-भात I Litti Chokha with Mukhiya

Chhath Puja is Bihar's major festival where devotees pay homage to the Sun God, engaging in prayers and fasting rituals that span over four days. The significance of this festival is marked by various customs, including sacred dips in holy rivers and offerings made to the rising and setting sun known as 'arghya.' The fasting and most of the rituals are done by womenfolk. The first day of Chhat Puja is called Nahay Khay.
On reaching Savita Ji’s home in Parsauna Village to witness the puja, we were graciously welcomed by her family, where we experienced the rituals associated with Nahay Khay. This ritual involves the preparation of rice and bottle gourd sabzi that is cooked without onions, garlic or tomatoes in a pristine environment. We had the privilege of observing the entire cooking process of this simple meal. Other accompaniments included dal, cauliflower-potato curry, fritters and yogurt.
Once the food was reverently offered to the Almighty, Savita Ji herself partook in it, signifying its sanctity. We then joined the rest of the family for the meal. Everyone were soaked in the festive spirit and eagerly awaiting the upcoming rituals.
As the evening approached, we ventured to the riverbank where the Chhath Puja set to unfold. The preparations were in full swing, with the village chef overseeing the arrangements.
An elaborate Litti Chokha meal was organized for the community serving there. We were graciously invited to partake in this feast. Witnessing the collective efforts of the community in preparing this traditional dish in large quantities was heartwarming.

The word Chhathi comes from the word Shashti, the sixth day after Diwali. Chhath is the oldest festival known to mankind, mentioned in Rigveda, during Treta and Dwapar yug as well, when Arjuna did it in Munger, after confluence of Bhagirath, Ganga, Yamuna, Saraswati etc carrying minerals, Sone carrying dried herbs, and Gandak etc carrying fresh herbs. It is also known as Hatthh Yog, when a person during a particular constellation(exactly co-inciding with Chhath) practices this. Part of it eating Lauki, also known as Kshirashay, anti acidity... Chana dal, protein rich, in essence preparing you to fast while keeping you energy rich. Wearing Turmeric dipped cloth, made of a single cotton yarn, without any stitch, while immersing him/herself in Ganga till navel... I guess, we create a folklore to engage more people, with scientific aspects.

Bejodd.. I can watch this over n again... what comes to my memories, is tht homes would be cleaned n sometimes whitewashed specially for the festival, n there are strict disciplines to be followed... the path to the ghat is well lit n the puja ghat decorated... Our festivals, do bind families n friends together, n helps nuture faith in that 'something' beyond all ! Sure, the setting sun brings rest... but it's hope that awaits dawn, the next morning :) Grateful.

Chhath: parv hai shuddhata ka, parv hai sare samaaj ko jodne ka, naa koi uncha naa neecha, koi alag niyam nahi sabke liye niyam ek samaan. One thing I would like to mention, usually there is a pandit ji in every puja, people need a Brahmin to make puja complete. But it is the only festival in the entire world which doesn't need any pandit yet all the rituals, all the rules are followed with utmost precautions and purity. Sad, but reality is that, caste based discrimination still prevail in our society, Chhath is the festival which removes this discrimination too. Chaahe Chhota ho yaa Raja sabke lie niyam ek sabki puja ek sabka bhaav ek sabki aastha ek. Islie hi toh isko kehte hain.. AASTHA KA MAHAPARVA.......!
