I learned of this song Monday 9/25/23 at a Funeral where I eulogized one of our church members, Doris Ann Arrington Wadley. In 1972 she sent a letter to the Federal Communications Commission and several members of Congress demanding they lift the ban on this song during the Vietnam War. And they shall rise up and call Sister Wadley’s name Blessed. Well mannered women rarely make history. Rest In Paradise Doris Ann Arrington Wadley. Immanuel Baptist Church, New Haven, CT.

I remember this song from my youth and it seemed no one in my circle remembered it. In finally getting it redeemed my own sanity.

My husband Jerry Lawson of The Persuasions performed at the Apollo Theatre for a week and that is where he first met Delia Gartrell and her husband James Shaw ( The Mighty Hannibal ) Jerry was so moved by this song that he recorded it on his album titled "Spread The Word"- Hannibal & Delia never got the credit on the Persuasions album which was on Capitol Records. Someone accidentally credited someone named Bettencourt.. and 30 years later we tracked down Hannibal to tell him we had just moved to Phoenix and actually ran into Mr. Bettencourt here who explained the mix up. From then on Hannibal & Jerry enjoyed a very regular phone friendship. Hannibal had big plans to record with Jerry. Sadly it never happened and at some point the phone contact diminished and then stopped. It's only today that we discovered Hannibal passed nearly one year ago. Hannibal was quite a character and we loved him.Miss Gartrell if you ever read this we would love to hear from you. Our sincerest condolences. mail@jerrylawson.biz Here is Jerry's version of your deeply moving song. soundcloud.com/jel1234/hymn-9

rosieone: A girl in my junior high school sang this song in a talent show in 1972. Everyone just went wild when she sang it, it was so powerful. She sang it at a faster pace. I've never forgotten it. I looked up the song to see who the original artist was. I actually like the way the student in the talent show sang it better.

This song and the lyrics have been in my head since the time I used to hear it on radio when I lived in Atlanta. Thanks for posting the song and the story behind it. For years I had the artist mixed up with someone else. I had thought the singer was also a guitarist. Now I know Delia Gartrell.
