This was a 1994 remake of a song Cash recorded in the early-1960s. A music video was made for the song, and aired on MTV a handful of times. The young listeners called the radio stations, clamoring to hear this “new” Johnny Cash song on the radio. The radio station program directors did not know that he had changed record labels, from Mercury Records to Def American Recordings (which changed its name to American Recordings). Eventually, the radio stations got wise, and Johnny Cash had a major career comeback, appealing to a new generation of music listeners. The 1994 remake of “Delia’s Gone” earned Johnny Cash a Grammy Award for “Best Folk Music Recording”.

The song was inspired by the story of 14 y.o. Delia Green who was shot on Xmas day 1900, in Savannah, Georgia by Moses Houston her teenage boyfriend.

My Mommy had 4 babies, her first one at age 35. I was the last one. My parents were Missionaries, sorry. Anyway my Mom lived long enough to see all of her Babies come to the age of 50. I was the last one, my mom died at 92 yrs of age. She was The Strongest Woman I've ever seen! At 65,(my age) I can't ever remember seeing her sick, or depressed or down trodden, she raised 4 children, babysitting on the side, and never once complaining. There are literally 100s of people in Our City, who call my Mother as "Mamma Dorothy". 🤗🤗🤗🤔😎

This song is a great example of what was known as a “Murder Ballad” and they were quite popular back in the day. Colter Wall just made a wrote a new one called Kate McCannon and it’s definitely worth a listen. He said he caught some flack over it but hey that’s art for ya. On a happier note would you and your wonderful mom react to John Prine “That’s the way the world goes round “? Thanks and have a great day.

Johnny Cash was a story-teller. Don't confuse the characters in his songs with Johnny. He often wrote from real life, as is the case here.

I heard a super creepy ghost story a while back about a guy who stayed in his grandpa's basement for a few months..in a haunted house, and he would actually hear a mother and son talking. They'd have conversations, some about HIM. The boy would even sometimes whisper in his ear, incoherent sentences, like sentences that just didn't make sense. He had to stay there until he saved up enough money to get his own place. Anyway, I've heard a lot of ghost stories but that one is next level.

Johnny originally recorded this is 1962. Some of the lyrics are different from that version. I personally prefer the 62 version. Luther Perkins guitar sounded great in that one.

The particular song was based on a true story as mentioned. A couple of teens in love and bickering. Might be interesting to note that the actual story happened in Georgia. How about that?:) There are a couple of different versions. This one yall listened to is from the murderers point of view. There is another from the victims point of view. I think Johnny had a soft spot for the imprisoned since he did many songs in which the narator was the prisoner. In Folsom Prison he also tells the story as the prisoner. I think Johnny wanted us to understand why they did what they did, right or wrong. Delia’s Gone’ is the Devil’s deed of daring,” said Cash. “We were talking about ‘Folsom Prison Blues’ - and ‘I shot a man in Reno just to watch him die’ - and I said, ‘I want another song like that.’ So Rick and I started listening and we found ‘Delia’s Gone.’ We realised I had recorded it in the ’60s, but not the way I’ve recorded it on American, and that I should work it up and do it over. So we started working on it and we did it and we came up with this version.” The "murder ballad" style goes waaaay back to the 1700's. It was very popular at one time. Lovers killing their lady down by a river or the woman killing the man at sea such as in "Polly". They are designed as shocking but at the same time strike us as funny. They use the macabre sense of humor which mixes the horrific with the humorous. Kind of like little mini horror stories. Gives the same feeling as when we watch Jason chase the girl down and we laugh about how dumb she is when she stumbles and he gets her. That kind of feeling. No other type songs quite bring that odd feeling and mixed emotions out. Great choice!

Thank You for being the first I've seen to react to this song! You may be surprised to learn that Wyciff John sings (and raps) this song on a Johnny Cash tribute show. It's pretty good! Now, You can be the first to react to The Kendalls! They were a 70s country group who had several hits, "Heaven's Just A Sin Away", being probably their biggest. Outstanding harmonies? Look no further!

Good News Johnny didn't write this song, He performed it for one of his prison concerts, to entertain the inmates. There are other versions of this song Bobby Bare does a somewhat toned down version (no mention of a sub machine). This is a great song for guys just going through a break up and wishing for some revenge. The message is clear "it might feel good in the moment but your actions will haunt you to your dying day.

Johnny Cash: Inspired by the death of Delia Green - ‘Delia’s Gone’ is the Devil’s deed of daring,” said Cash.
