I was lucky to get this advice when I was very young - I deliberately practiced learning to learn - I am middle aged now and last year (2022), to prove to my kids that once you learn to learn you can learn anything, starting from absolutely zero skills, I learnt roller blading , ice-skating and skiing all within one year. Needless to say they are sold!

When I was in college, I became really interested in learning new skills and dedicated a lot of time to it, which noticeably improved what I knew and what I could do. After college though, I became very busy with work and haven’t had the same amount of free time to dedicate to learning new skills. After seeing this video, I feel motivated to get back into the mindset I had.

One thing to consider is that you'll never be great at anything if you want to do everything. I've had to really narrow my interests to surpass the mediocre level I had been trapped at for years.

@@Eterrath don't take it personal, I mean its about intent; why are they pointing out your inadequacies, is it because they see a problem that needs to be addressed for the superiority of the group to increase? That should be accepted and understood, leaving the inferiority message to pass by in the river that is a swarm of your thoughts which constantly flow inside your brain. Otherwise is it because of some insecurity that they're projecting or they've had a bad day and are possessed by a negative state so they naturally pass on that negative charge to someone else because then they will feel better having rid themselves of that charge giving it away. You know when you feel hurt , hurting someone else feels kind of like it mollifies the pain. Well depending on what's the intent is if you should take the criticism not personally and ignore it due to its lack of genuine constructiveness. Criticism should only be spoken with the purpose for your improvement & THEN you should happily accept the criticism because its not meant to denigrate you but just means hey you can listen up and learn something you didn't notice or know before. Learning is a privelage we should all enjoy and appreciate how fortunate we are every time we realise we dont know something then it means we have an opportunity to learn something new and that's growth and improvement building a better you. Avoiding criticism is shallow because self education is limited to self perception and we're sooo blind to many things about us.

@@mikhailst.1482 Thank you for your words. I'll keep them in mind when I can actually reach that stage, however. But what I was talking about is that I can't really move past the paywall. I'm a highschooler without a job. And things are a little different in my country. So what I'm basically saying is that I can't access that option, that facility at all. It's on me to point out to myself where my problems are and it can get tricky sometimes and takes the whole process up by a notch. I still haven't acquired any skill, I've only begun narrowing my options down since last year (the lockdowns gave me time separate from studies to realize that it's much more competitive than I thought). That's why I was asking for the other story in detail, because I need something to keep myself going, I need to get good at something so that I can stop blaming my finances and start blaming myself

That's the reason I stopped gaming at all. I still watched movies or TV series for like hours until it was complete but the gaming was too much and after 1500 hours in CS, I just looked back at the time I spend and thought what would had happened if I olayed Badminton for 1500 hours or if I took a bunch of excel courses. So that's what I did. I spend like 100 hours on Excel, got a job. Then spent like 200 hours on learning PHP, got another job. Then spent 500+ hours on learning Java and got a permanent position that I liked.

These clips are the best onramp to the full long form version! I was looking for, "deliberate practice" and this clip has me queue up the whole convo cause this clip makes the guy seem way more interesting than I imagined lol! Also, I feel like all you really need to do is add properly tagged timestamps, chapter titles, annotations or whatever they call them to the original long video and if done right then the direct link straight to the annotations will appear in the search results just like as if that chapter was cut out and is it's own video with Title and description and preview and all... Would save the hassle of having to add these 'Clips' as separate entities in your videography ya know?

Found the cheat sheet boys: What is the one skill worth having? The ability to become good at learning new skills, and to add those skills to your arsenal of skills. Who is a great example of skill acquisition? Tim Ferris. What parallel is Jason Calacanis drawing between basketball and learning? To learn any skill, you must study it through close observation, and correct your form. What should you not do? Do not waste time watching TV shows. All those hours could have been spent on acquiring a new skill. Is it always about putting in the hours? No, it’s about deliberate practice i.e., it’s not just about performing a behavior, but rather the intensity of that behavior within a given time frame. Instead of moving on to play “the next game”, what should you be doing? Reviewing your losses and figuring out what mistakes you’ve made. What is a powerful primal human force worth considering? Competition, the need to win, to have it your way, no matter what.

You cannot learn subject matter in 40 hours, you see it takes a certain amount of years for the brain to develop abstractions to carry out problem solving no matter, currently the world is flooded with the impulse of short learnings (learn graphic design), this is not learning this is superficial knowledge spreading, Lex should know this well, think of reinforced learning.. think of the "rate we learn from mistakes vs a computer" for us humans learning to master takes time. The question is what is the aim of this short term learning.?

If learning is so easy, why do Journalists object to being told to transition to another line of work? The advice, " Learn to Code ", was made into a slander phrase on social Media. Apprenticeship to becoming a journeyman takes time. The worst part when the average slow poke bubba becomes a journeyman, the market is saturated & / or technology has eliminated that need. And folks wonder why so many folks are filing for SSA disability beginning in their 50's. Britain got rid of slavery, not for humanitarian reasons, but so that peasants could get jobs. North American People need jobs. We need to build things here. We need to stop spending all our $$ in overseas markets. Peace.

While I agree and want people to learn ALL the skills, this isn't capitalism... modern capitalism has turned corporations into monopolies who, like Micheal Jordan, will do anything to win - destroy the environment, decimate small communities, and even kill people in 3rd world countries. This whole mindset of win-win is egotistical and unstable. Perhaps we should be developing markets without incentivizing competition and "winning." A place where everyone benefits, instead of just the one 1%. Trade secrets and patents on lifesaving technology are slowly poisoning any chance we have at solving climate change. This misunderstanding of capitalist rhetoric is dangerous.
