It made it much easier to skip a few discussions, for example, if you wanted to see the discussion for best score, but not best multiplayer or whatever. And that's what I wanted to do. But it was too much of a hassle like this, so I just watched the video at the end.

The most entertaining and divisive debate most definitely had to be the Best RPG. Huber vs Ben. Guns out and blazing! I'm so proud of Huber for defending Dragon Quest because it was one of my top picks for that category personally. Its story and ability to keep you engaged through its narrative is a classic RPG at its core and MHW didn't do that for me. Thanks again Huber for sticking your neck out for DQ11. Though it didn't win, I feel you championed for that game better than anyone could have done and all us Dragon Quest fans are grateful for that!

Monster Hunter has actually always been classed as an RPG of sorts so I really don't see the issue. I'm sure all the counter arguments people can give are similar to Hubers; but if games like The Witcher and Dark Souls class as RPGs. So does MH. Just because it's different, doesn't change what it has in common for progression, grinding, and quest structure.

I do not criticize their tastes and decisions, but it seems strange to me that Vavra and KCD as a game were cut out absolutely from all the tops and awards in the west. And obviously not due to the fact that the game is bad, because some put 10 (in Eastern Europe, for example) and called it a new word in the genre, but it is also a very vivid example of one of the best projects kickstarter. When he wants something to win, he starts critizising stuff about another game he basically has no interest in while pushing for game x with the argument "you know me, I don't like many games but when I do, that game has to be extraordinary". I just think that everyone else is very deliberately restraining themselves to articulate their takes in a giving time window while Ian goes crazy for the four to five games he liked that year. Wow, Assassins Creed nominated as best RPG while Octopath Traveler doesn't get a nomination is an upset. Also, Spider-Man being nominated for nothing besides GOTY is also strange. It had such a great story, voice acting, visuals, gameplay and score.

That stupid squad battle mechanic it made you do halfway through the game I put it down after losing that a few times due to me not leveling up the awful castle building aspect which was also pointless and not fleshed out. Wasn't even a huge fan of the first, the battle and party system/actions were awful but the storyline of the first game was waaay better than than the sequel.

Wow, I would have said the "Everyone is Here" Smash reveal trailer is the best of the year. Everyone goes into any new fighting game just assuming half the characters from the last one will be gone. Everyone assumed that Snake would never return and Cloud probably wouldn't either. The progressive building music as each character gets revealed and you slowly realize how many characters are being revealed, reaching Cloud followed by Snake with the "Everyone is Here" text you are just in disbelief. And then it just keeps going. Right after Snake you see Pichu and you can't believe it, still wondering if "everyone" really means everyone as they all get revealed with further swelling music climaxing with the reveal of the Ultimate title. Hands down the best trailer of the year, don't know why it wasn't even considered.

@@christosphero4893 I enjoyed Ni No Kuni 2, but there were significant shortcomings. It was a significant inconvenience to use the whole party and players tended to use the same 3 characters for the whole game. It's interesting that Octopath loses points because the party never seems to be a team with any purpose, because in NNK2 characters were absent bar cut scenes for the entire game. And ultimately for me, NNK2 battle system was nowhere near as nuanced and rewarding as Octopath.

Sad... you included two non-RPGs in the RPG category, didn't even include three true RPGs you discussed, Octopath, Torna, and Pokemon, and then gave the award to a non-RPG. Really feels like, both here and at TGA, that this award category became a "where can we recognize MHW, because we know it won't win GOTY". ACO and MHW, while great games, are not RPG. They're action-adventure at it's finest, but not RPG. There is so little story in MHW, a key element of RPGs, that it shouldn't have even been a question. Ah well... still love you guys! Yeah I don't consider MHW a RPG at all either. You don't upgrade your character. Sure you get new armour that beef your stats and what not but it's not like you're putting points into yourself. I love MHW... it's one of the best games i played in 2018 hands down. I fell into it bad. Sunk like 200+ hours into it. Definitely don't consider it a RPG though.

Someone told me to watch this after I left a comment on the actual awards video about how I couldn't understand MHW winning best RPG. After watching, I still don't understand. It seems like it only won because most the Allies who loved it knew it wasn't going to win GOTY. They couldn't put their bias aside. But then where do the lines get drawn? Any game from any genre could just hop into a category it doesn't belong in just to win as long as it's the better game. But the question is which is the better game OF THIS GENRE. MHW is an action/rpg at best sure. But it's not more of an RPG than DQ11. And I would argue ACO is more RPG than MHW & I don't understand how that game is on the list either. My original argument was if ACO is on the list how was GoW not on the list? Leveling up? Check. Loot? Cheek. Skill trees? Check. Side quests? Check. This isn't so much about the best games in each genre it's "what's our favorite games & what can we award them?" An Action/Adventure award would have gone a long way here. A online mp AND local mp award would've gone a long way. I have sunk 200 hours into MHW myself, but I know DQ is the better RPG of the 2. And who says only 1 game can win the award anyways? That's always kind of bothered me about these things. You could say" THESE are the best RPGs (or whatever genre) this year" with no singular winner. Why does there need to be 5 nominees per category? Idk maybe it's just me. I just don't understand how you can try to shoehorn games into certain categories just to meet a quota or ax whole other categories simply because there aren't that many.

As a suggestion for next year (or any long stream for that matter); You could keep a timer on your laptop that you turn on the moment the camera starts rolling. Everytime the discussion moves to a new categorie or subject, you could mark the time down with the subject. That way, by the end of the discussion/video, you would already have timestamps. I don't miss them on smaller videos, but when you have an almost 7 hour video with 18 different subjects, it's hard to go without them to be honest. Personally, I'm not really interested in 'Best Multiplayer' for example so it would be nice to skip it easily.

Thanks for doing this! Currently during GOTY and have been enjoying th ride so far - here are some random remarks: - Geralt got cut too fast, he's on the cover and featured in the storyline of SCVI. Also a LOT of work went into realising the 100+ moves true to his character. - Best Strategy should maybe just be cut if the Allies didn't really play/enjoy any of those games for the strategy aspect. It was kinda hard to listen to and seemed like a redundant category for an expression of the games EZA cared for in 2018. - Best Trailer also felt kinda like a rehash and was a bit slow. - Best Character is a category that every Ally wants to be involved with. Just have more like that one. - Ben giving up Celeste for Astrobot for the greater good was heartwarming knowing how much it means to him. Astrobot does too but well. He's one to really fight for his favorites though so it still meant a lot, I feel. These deliberations would lose a lot without him. - MK11 trailer had a lot of kills felt but not a single confirmed one. Let us hope for the final release. Looking forward for Huber's Review and the full playthrough with Kyle. - I like Kyle's sneakers very much. Also one correction: Damiani is NOT sorry and he DID NOT want to love the music of DQXI !! He had a whole playlist of hand-picked jrpg-soundtracks locked and loaded before he even created the save-file lmao

The Allies, especially Ben and Huber, are responsible for getting me into one of my favorite franchises now with Yakuza, but I'm a lil suprised that the Yakuza OSTs are never brought up when talking about OSTs of the Year. Yakuza 0 had a Top 5 OST in 2017 and had SOOO many incredible and memorable Boss themes and on the other hand a lot other unique tracks that perfectly capture it's Insane spectrum of emotions and unfortunately it wasn't even mentioned once last Year. Yakuza 6 this year was not the absolute best OST in the Series, but I think it aboslutely deserves a mention. There are some really funky and hype tracks that go in another sound direction from previous Yakuza games and I personally really liked the make-up of the Soundtrack. Granted only Huber played Yakuza 6, but I'd love for Blood and the others to check out future entires and hoepfully consider them in furture awards. The Yakuza Spin-off Judge Eyes/Judgment coming out Summer 2019 has again a really good OST overall and most of the tracks really fit the mood of the game nicely.

@@EasyAllies It's a fundamentally broken system and you've done nothing to address it. I get that you can't all play everything, but you should at least all play the nominees. Get the nominees nailed down like a month before hand and then just have all the allies play them. The GOTYs don't have to be announce until months later anyway. Take your time. Make it into an event. Don't just do GOTYs because you feel like you have too.

And probably my fault for assuming pre recorded meant you guys were gonna do all these cool graphics and stuff, but even then this video would be helped IMMENSELY by at least a list of nominees and the category you are currently discussing at the top of the screen. Minor notes on Thronebreaker for anyone interested. You don't play as Geralt, nor is he a real large presence in the story, at least 27 hours in where I'm at. Post-Homecoming Gwent's relation to Thronebreaker is comparable to Hearthstone and it's adventure expansions. A lot of pre-existing cards from Gwent have had their text changed to accommodate Thronebreaker's story and single player mechanics. Interestingly enough, the strengths of Thronebreaker have little to do with Gwent's core battle system. I found myself enjoying the puzzle scenarios a whole lot more than the familiar best of 3 round battles. The main draw for me became the strong characters and the compelling side stories you stumble across as your travel across each map. As a fan of Thronebreaker, tossing it out was the right call; even if more of the allies had played Thronebreaker, it wouldn't really belong.

Monster Hunter World is not an RPG period, DQ11 is and that is what that category was. So for the life of me I do not understand how MHW could win that. If MHW is an RPG so is GOW but that wasn't in the running so why was MHW?

MHW has more RPG elements than GOW. For one, you can literally create your character. You can't do that in Gow. You can craft your weapons and armour out of many. Stats can be more important in MHW than GoW when it comes to taking down Monsters. How is it not an RPG? Cause it's not turn based? Cause it's action? Bullshit. That's the problem with the RPG category, it's too old and needs to be renamed. You literally play a role in every game now.

Apart from the fact that Dragon Quest XI is the superior RPG, I personally don't even understand why people hype Monster Hunter that much as an action game. The world, creatures and coop elements are, grantedly, very well done, but the actual FIGHTING is so clunky and unresponsive. I never really got Ian's argument in hating on the combat in Witcher 3 vs. Bloodborne ... until I played the Monster Hunter demo. That being said, Witcher 3 actually was an RPG (i.e. the fighting wasn't the core mechanic, and hence the somewhat clunky combat wasn't gamebraking).

Poor Octopath :( it has the best soundtrack of the year and the best turn-based battle system in any rpg ever, also a stellar presentation. Yes, the structur is repetetive, but it's great nonetheless. At least Jones liked it! Edit: Smash for Best Music is a pretty good choise though.

The soundtrack of Octopath traveler is insanely good. Personally, I don't think any other game soundtrack this year came close, even Smash with its cool remixes. And like you said, the turn-based gameplay is absolutely awesome.

To be fair that game is more about out building your opponent then shooting. Sure you have to kill the opponent at the end of it, but try just playing that game with only shooting. You will get destroyed. Don't get me wrong... i don't think Fortnite is a masterpiece by any stretch of the imagination, but it does what it does very well.

While I get Hubers argument against Monster Hunter: World in the RPG category, the game does have lore dumps for returning Hunters, if you are new to the series these are easily missed. Nullberries reference the last offical game MH4 with Gore Magala and the frenzy virus. The mohawk Hunter in the intro and at the hub is Ace Cadet also from MH4. Lastly Rotten Vale is in fact a dead Elder Dragon from MH4 called Dalamadur.
