My mom shows you how to make delicious Chinese 5 spice crispy roast pork belly recipe in a matter of hours with a few easy steps and ingredients. The crispy roast pork belly taste so delicious and crispy with a golden color. Enjoy!
Ingredients / Method
In this video we are using 3 pounds of pork belly
cut a few slices into meat for the spice marinate
marinate the meat
- 2 teaspoon salt
- 2 teaspoon Bean Sauce
- 2 teaspoon Chinese 5spice powder
marinate the pork belly skin
- 2 Bicarbonate soda
- 2 teaspoon salt
- cool water
1. marinate for 5-6 hours or overnight for more flavor in the fridge uncovered to release the meats moisture.
2. when ready to roast, boil a pot of water and boil both sides of the meat for 5mins
3. we used a grill with a turntable function, we first roast the meat side for 50mins on high then after we flip the meat around to grill the pork belly skin for 40mins
when ready chop into pieces and enjoy with family

I made this today and it’s awesome. It comes out perfectly seasoned and no unpleasant baking soda taste (you can taste it but it’s not bad), which I’m sensitive to. I might still add a little sugar like I usually do to the meat side and some rice wine.

Very sweet family i tried this method and it didn't work so i believe some steps weren't shown i always use the salt crust method and it works so very well and is faster same day eating I think this was a flop because i got the skin wet when i boiled it and this is why i chose to copy your method to get rid of any impurities i think a good wash with lemon/lime does the same thanks.

Thanks for posting this recipe. It looks simple and delicious. What was the objective of scraping the skin with the knife? When you stab the meat with the forks, how deep should the forks penetrate? Should they go go all the way through the skin or not? In the video, you are using a microwave with a convection oven function. Would a normal convection oven work? Would an air-fryer work? Should a large plate be placed under the rack to catch the drippings to make cleanup easier? Thanks again.

Scrapping the skin to get rid of small skin hairs. We just use and fork to penetrate the pork skin. Not that successful with a normal oven and air fry. It always worked out when we use the grill in our microwave that has a turn table. There is a plate collecting the dripping oils to make cleaning easier

I love the commentary 😂. This is an interesting method for doing this. Normally when I see baking soda in pork belly they also use vinegar. So many different methods for making this dish! I want to give this one a try! What kind of bean sauce? Like the ground bean sauce/ yellow bean? Hoisin?

The jar just says bean sauce. It's like a smooth paste. It's a yellow with blue label on jar you can find in your Chinese supermarket

@@CantoneseFoodRecipes That sounds like a jar of KoonChun. I have ground bean sauce, so I’m going to try it with that since it should be pretty similar (I’m not in the US so I have to make do with what I have).

Its was in the highest temperature on the microwave grill. Not sure as the microwave does not say

I followed the directions and watched this several times and wrote down the step by step instructions but it came out burnt to a dry crisp and melted part of the microwave window and my wife has graciously been cleaning the microwave for quite a while. Yours looks so delicious but do you have this recipie with regular oven baking instructions? Thank you.

Oh no, was there a grill function in your microwave. I will try to test this recipe out in the oven soon. I did try making char siu with pork belly and it burnt so I need to test out the temperature. My microwave grill has a turn table function while the pork belly is grilling

Is it possible to do this in air fryer toaster oven.? I do not cook in my microwave oven. Nevertheless,it looks great.

Depending on the size of pork belly 230-200 degrees on the meat side and 190-180 degree on the skin side. We will try to experiment this recipe using an oven soon

It depends on how much the weight of pork belly that you are roasting. I used 400F for the meat, 40 mins and 450F for skin on boiling function in my oven for 20 mins. It came out good but I haven't tried the bicarbonates soda on the skin yet.

So we leave the pork belly in the refrigerator uncovered so the skin dries out then after that we add moisture back into the skin by putting it in boiling water?

I found your video worst of all the KZbin videos on crispy pork belly. The skin didn't look as crispy as you brag. Boiling the belly to dilute the marinate is dumb. And I feel sorry for your microwave with all the drippings.

lol reminds me of when I was a kid trying to steal a piece when my dad was not looking, I notice that you use bean sauce in place of Nam Yee! I will have to try making it this way! does the bean paste contain MSG? I am MSG sensitive, Ve Tsin as a child I never had a problem with but the amount used was so minimal on the end of a matchstick and scrape of a good amount.
