A few years before leaving Latvia I was invited to a real farm which for me as a city boy was the best experience you can get. Authentic ligo with traditions like sauna, swings, songs, homemade sausages, cheese and beer. Definitely the most beautiful celebration Latvians have as you said - its more about coming together, where strangers become your childern if you are the host. Thanks for the vid.

Important corrections (imho) Tradition is pagan and all rituals are about fertility or related rites from pagan origin. Not much relation to St.John. Ligo is not Latvian word, but Liiv, which is finno-ugric language carriers

This was interesting. It seems odd that St John’s Day would be celebrated in what sounds like a more pagan way. I would think it would be about going to church.

Jāņi in Latvia, Jonines in Lithuania, Jaanipaev in Estonia, Ivan Kupala in slavic nations is a pagan fertility festival on midsummer. The church knew it couldn't eradicate it so made St. John's the Baptists day on midsummer to rebrand it in a more acceptable way.

Līgo name was again an attempt to rebrand the name of the celebration by Latvian nationalists in early 20th century as they thought that the name Jāņi was not a Latvian name for the celebration. The culprit of this - composer Emilis Melgailis expressed regrets for his ill informed actions already in 1928.

So it's all one pagan midummer celebration similar also in Nordic countries with various ideologies trying to bend it to their liking.

@@chris-2496 Since you seem to be from this area of the world, you might know this; I am a Christian in the US and I am wondering if other Christians there refuse to partake of these celebrations because of their pagan overtones? Or is it so ingrained in the culture that it seems benign to them?
