Whether or not this was actually made by Autechre originally it's still pretty "Autechre-y" certainly similar to anything between LP5 and Quaristice. As someone who reads about them using Max to make their recent music this video is super cool and really informative no matter who made the patch originally. Thanks for the explanation :)

I've been waiting for a video like this for a while! autechre pretty much got me into max msp, so seeing what kind of methods used are really fulfilling. though they might not be actual autechre patches, because they are for the most part much more organized from a picture that they released.

@dude837 Actually, Sean Booth did claim this as originating from autechre. And that it is nothing special, the equivalent of a 'sunday postcard'. and there's quite a bit of interesting things to learn from it.

@@pulsatingquasar4561 Sean confirmed this in the WATMM AAA (ask autechre anything) in 2013. They said it was an experiment in "fractal" use of phasors?? something like that. It comes from the 2001 confield era, and was "heavily modified" by an artist who goes by 'powmod'

@aeko In retrospect that's actually very encouraging. I have a soft but steadfast love for autechre and it was disappointing to think that one of their patches could seriously look like this. I'm making changes to this video now.

As usual, great video. Thanks a lot man, really interesting to see a coder looking at a musicians patching.

@aeko You are correct and I am embarrassed. Honestly I downloaded the patch, the patch was named Autechre, it had a vaguely Autechre sound, that was good enough for me. More research next time.

In art the really important thing is the finished product. pd and Max forums are full of people that know how to program but are unable to make a composition, its like telling Van Gogh that he grabs the brush with bad technique. Beside that, this is not from autechre, right? Anyway, your tutorials are great, thanks!

At 05:07 , why use Delta subtracting 0.5 from the phasor and ommiting the dela object gives the same result , because edge~ still detects zero to non zero transitins

This is so interesting to watch even if I have no idea what the hell is going on for half of it.

Hi, have been watching your video's that are very helpful in creating sound. What I am interested though is analysis of incoming voice for example. To derive a set of parameters like transients, beats, volume changes, pitch following, etc. that can be used to drive other patches, perhaps to generate video. It would be great if this could be added to the todo tut list ;) Thanks for the great tuts so far!

Would absolutely love a tutorial that is exactly this! I’m 6 years late to the party, but I love autechre and attempt to make very, let’s say, quasi/pseudo-generative stuff using ableton’s native effects and some of the max for live presets. But I’m basically trying to do the same thing for a sound installation, using sound/voices (the sounds and voices being the people attending the installation) to manipulate a set of parameters in what will hopefully be a constantly evolving ambient, generative max patch. I hope I can achieve this, no matter how messy it ends up being.

Hey dude 837, why don't you elaborate more on this patch and the sequencing part of it. What it would be cool is to make a tutorial on "composing" something which sounds random, but it is deterministic! Cheers mate!

You might want to post that in the video description/title for the sake of clarity. As complex as this patch appears as first unlock :) emulating Autechre isn't as easy as throwing a bunch of cycle~ modules together with some gain~ objects. The sound synthesis they're doing is a fair bit more complex and would involve keeping their patches much cleaner with subpatchers, etc.

@sus666 cleaning up patches is akin to OCD? I'm guessing you haven't created any patches of much complexity. Because cleaning up patches is part of being able to create anything that actually works. Unless you like trying to re-figure out what the heck is happening every time you open your patch.

you are not informed. They use both, but Max 8 is a core element.

@dude837: Um, this patch isn't by Autechre. AT ALL. This patch is by PowMod and has been thoroughly discussed on the Cycling '74 forums. It also sounds like shit and is incredibly messy, garbage patching. Might want to do more research before you claim to have something from someone who didn't make them.
