A tiny village located atop the Charmadi ghat in Mudigere taluk of Karnataka, Kottigehara was a mere bus stop on this old route to Dakshina Kannada. Travellers would stop here for a few minutes and if hungry, would saunter off to one of the few home eateries on this remote, narrow strip of highway. And perhaps because its quick batter, water-like in its consistency, required almost no prep when an unexpected guest walked in, the neer dosae (neer meaning ‘water’ in kannada) quickly became the staple offering of this village centered around a bus stand. Whist many neer dosa stalls have mushroomed since, the oldest home eatery here is Anil Hotel, begun by Mrs. Mary 48 years ago and now managed by her son, Baby and his wife, Theresia. Famous for its honestly-priced homestyle curries, tasty preparations and warming hospitality that I first experienced a year ago, I learnt that the eatery was recently rebuilt after being demolished in highway expansion causing untold challenges to the family. In this episode, we revisit this tiny enterprise to not just savour their fare for the day but to also support them as they make a new beginning despite having a legacy of nearly half a century.

Neer dose is not chakuli pitha, its different, same ingredients, but chakuli is thick, neerdose is very thin/transparent

Kripal , I was there 30 days back at night 9.00 pm to finish my dinner while driving towards Mangalore . Best thing is even at night 9.00 pm they served becha beccha neer dose to all 4 of us. I took chutney , veg curry and pulav which very delicious.

Kottigehara is more known place to us to rendezvous during mid 2000's while on the road usually for a sumptuous early breakfast or a late dinner, rarely lunch though.

No idea why none of these restaurants don't serve the Neer dose with spicy green coriander chutney. Once you have that you won't ever look back. Make it at home and you won't need to go anywhere! Of course it goes great with any of the manglorean non veg curries. Have 2 pans cooking the doses at one go and should easily stuff a family straight hot from the pan. Will go great with fish curry made with jarigeda votte instead of tamarind which you should be able to make in 30 mins if you know how. But then the more the varieties of fish / sea food curries the better!
