I remember a job I once did when I was running containers out of Felixstowe docks. I'd started in halesowen west Midlands, I collected a small skeleton trailer which had been delivered to the yard before I'd got the job. I'd only been driving a short while and the job was to collect a 20' container from Perry bar containerbase and take it to dairy crest factory near wells in Somerset to load 17 tons of milk powder for barhrain tomorrow morning then deliver it to Felixstowe docks. I actually managed to get loaded in the early evening so I parked up in their company car park. At the time dairy crest had a social club on sight so I looked forward to trying it out later with a few beers etc. I was a little tired so had a little nap hoping to wake up later. However, when I eventually awoke it was after 11pm and pitch black outside, so my treat had to be postponed. I needed a run-out so jumping down stepped forward into the dark and after relieving myself turned to go back to the cab I suddenly realised I couldn't see the cab. Like a blind person I tried feeling for the cab and getting disorientated thought I must've walked further than I'd realised as the cab I'd eventually found seemed too short. Then I realised I'd left the door open, so it'd obviously appear as a short cab and finding the steps climbed back in shut the door. Thinking I was going barmy I decided to turn in properly and setting the alarm for an early start got some shut eye. I was hoping to start at 6am, the alarm woke me and getting dressed put the lights on as it was still pitch black outside, changed the tacho and started the engine and turned on the headlights. Nothing, no lights and couldn't see a thing. I climbed down and went round the front to see if the lights were working. I was surprised and confused I had to press right up to the lamps just to see a glimmer of light from the bulbs. Anyway, climbing back behind the wheel I pondered the situation. It was a short time later that I realised it was fog that was the cause of the blackness, I've never seen fog so thick in my life before or since. It was so black with fog I couldn't even see high or low beam through the windscreen or anything else in the mirrors anywhere. So, I had no alternative but go back to bed as it was far too dangerous to make a move. When it lifted it was well after 9.30am, I decided to head towards the M4 instead of the A303 as I thought this would be the safest route with the pockets of fog still around. Anyway I successfully managed to get to Felixstowe and just as I was going around the island to go into the docks I happen to notice the wheel on the trailer just drop off. The twin wheels had worn themselves over the studs and just fell off. Unbelievable,,after all the miles I'd done with it it decides to fall off just at that particular time, how lucky could one be, thinking the carnage had they broke free at speed on the motorway. How lucky is that ?

Hi Luke, it often annoys me when vehicles park and keep their engines running. I now realize that trucks could be charging air pressure or needing the heat in the cab, but the fumes are not good to breathe for the forklift drivers etc. that is what I like about these vlogs, they educate folk as to the life of a trucker. Thanks for all of it.

I hauled Christmas trees once & never again. They had a conveyor & crew to stack them in my trailer. Was told I would "assist" in unloading at 3 locations. But upon arrival it was me, myself & I who unloaded the trailer. All while having to negotiate tight delivery areas designed for day cab trucks. I was paid $55 for 2 stop offs because the final doesn't count in the US & $200 for unload. I could have made more just driving miles & not wrecking my body on the last half of the trailer.

Luke,I used to deliver "artificial" Christmas trees to garden centres and also Homebase and B&Q forvwhat was the largest artificial tree wholesalers in the UK. Deliveries started in September, after collecting containers from the docks in July and August. When it got the Christmas, my family just couldn't understand why I 100% hated the sight of Christmas trees. We had the same problems at the big DIY stores that you had that day. But we used to have 10 or 11 drops, and our transport office couldn't understand the delays at these places, as their head office always told them there weren't delays at any of their stores 🤣🤣🤣 I've finally got over my artificial tree phobia, and it only took 15 years, and retiring. Keep on trucking Luke C 👍👏

I used to work in a paper mill ...when a lorry came in with a delivery the driver had to hand his keys to the fork lift driver and then go an sit in a cabin until unloaded .at one point a wagon was getting unloaded and the wagon driver moved forward while the fork lift was under the pallet tipping the fork lift over .....so I can understand the it

23:30 Unfortunately Luke some places are stricter than others, as someone that unloads trailers daily we have to follow rules on the backdoor/service yard whether we think they're stupid or not. Because at the end of the day, it's our job that's on the line and not the drivers. As for not getting someone to you as soon as you ring the bell, again as someone that works in a supermarket that unloads trailers of delivery, we're usually tasked more than just unloading drivers (Shopfloor, Warehouse & Service yard) but yeah, getting fustrated with a tipper doesn't help yourself, it's out of our control unfortunately, engine off or keys in the locked box when a trailer is being unloaded, etc etc. Stupid rules that we have to follow, obviously we know drivers wouldn't just drive off being unloaded, but accidents can happen.

All those stores you mentioned will be working with the minimum number of staff possible - a delay in tipping you wont bother the companies (unless of course "you" are late and dont deliver on the expected day). I wouldnt be surprised if the staff in the store dont know which day you are scheduled to deliver

Hey Luke, need your help. I've got a question about truck sat navs. For cars, I've always used Garmin as it's just better. I thought maybe TomTom are better for trucks. But after comparing the specs and reading tons of reviews I wonder if that is the case, as the Garmin has more ram, a better screen, better maps and free lifetime updates, an optional dashcam and reversing camera, Bluetooth and USB C! What are your thoughts as TomTom user for so long, am I missing something?
