Would you rather go for the G3 or a 1-2 generation old flagship gaming laptop? Does the newer CPU/GPU outweigh the other improvements? Intel stuff has been running the same architecture for years now so it seems like an easy decision
@Bartmelo
@Bartmelo 4 жыл бұрын
For the gamer out there I think it depends on the GPU side. Remember the jump from the 9XX GTX series to the 10XX GTX Series? That was massive. In that kind of context I believe the GPU outweights the other improvements and this kind of budget laptops make sense.

I got the exact same specs for $699 during black friday sale. Then I got 144hz monitor for $150. I was able to undervolt cpu and gpu and then I eliminated pl1 throttling using throttlestop. Now my cpu and gpu are not throttled at all. CPU runs at 4 ghz.

2 gen old GPU is horrifically bad compared to Turing. I used a G3 last year for a while, and it was "okay", but I bought the laptop I'm using right now for $999 at Microcenter and it is a much better laptop IMO. I paid that for a Maingear Vector, which uses an aluminum & carbon chassis, and has a i7-9750H, 16 GB DDR4, GTX 1660 TI, 512 GBNVME M.2 SSD, and a 144 Hz 1080P display made by LG. It might not be the very best display out there, but it's much nicer than most in the $1,000 range. It's also a matte display which is fairly uncommon. Not only is the display much better on the Vector, I felt the chassis was of much higher quality, much faster CPU, and the 1660 TI in the Vector is NOT max-Q so it's a much more powerful GPU as well. To compare screens, my Vector's screen is 298 nits, 876:1 contrast, average delta 2.59, max delta 4.33, 95.3% sRGB, 61.1% AdobeRGB. So worse contrast than the G3, but better everywhere else. The real problem is also that 1660 TI Max-Q is much slower than 1660 TI. 1660 TI Max-Q is about on par with 1060, non max-q 1660 TI's like the one in my laptop get about 20% more fps in games.

Don't you love it when your entire team gets backstabbed by a single spy because everyone is laser focused on the enemy team ahead and never checks their back. A week ago, I was playing payload on gold rush and we're at the final point. Enemy is pushing in, there's a phlog pyro behind us who charged up with crits and I had to pop uber and spam so my team wouldn't die. Pyro doesn't even get noticed and charges up another oomph meter because nobody turned around and noticed his flames. Bruh lol

1:20 - Here's the advice which is very important to prevent hinge accident. When opening and/or closing the laptop, I use 2 index/thumb fingers from both hands, one is opening or closing the laptop exactly right in the middle edge only (never use left or right corners more importantly) and one is holding the laptop exactly right in the middle edge as well.

I've had my G3 for about 7 months and use it daily. It hasn't let me down in anything performance-wise. But the hinge on this model is almost guaranteed to break eventually as mine has just recently. There is also a seemingly rare issue with multiple key inputs resulting in a "stuck" key input state. I haven't found any solution to this as it is not a key mechanically malfunctioning, but something on the software side. This leads to some frustrating moments when playing games as your character will continue to take an action until you tap the key again.

@eddihaskell
@eddihaskell 4 жыл бұрын
@@underTheStormIt depends on whether or not you are traveling with this laptop, surge protection, and how often and with what care you are opening the hinge. FYI, I purchase many electronic items, and I have had only 2 items "fry" on me (for lack of a better term). Both happened about 12 years ago. The first was a motherboard on a 55 inch Sony LED television when they were very expensive a few days out of a two year warranty. The second was a motherboard of a 17 inch HP Pavilion laptop i purchased on Ebay used 4 months after the sale. Both items ended up being worthless and too expensive to repair. I am not purchasing an extended warranty on the Dell beyond the one year warranty that it came with because I am not planning on traveling much with the laptop, the credit card I used offers an additional 1 year extension beyond the purchase price, and technology improves such that in two years time what costs $700 now should cost 70% of the price due to improvements in processing power. But if anything is going to break it will be the motherboard IMHP- that is if you not drop it or spill a drink on it. The only other item that "fried" on me was a Gateway desktop that literally was too close to a lightning strike that took out an entire wall outlet (and the surge protector) around 4 years ago here in Florida -- it was unavoidable and covered by a Square Trade Policy. I was lucky not to have been sitting in the same room, but Florida is one of the lightning capitals of the world.

So the new 2020 model (the one I have) has an option for a 144hz 1080p, 300nits display which is actually pretty solid, I think the pixel response isn't too bad either. Mine has an RTX2060 with 16GB RAM as well and I was able to get it for £980. I will say the hinge design and keyboard are a flaw but that price point is unbeatable for those specs right now, and I use an external mechanical keyboard+mouse anyway. Thanks for the great review! Edit: the thermals are actually pretty solid, considering its got an i7, I haven't thermal throttled yet. Unfortunately I can't undervolt the CPU because XTU doesn't support comet lake :(((

"A big reason for why I don't generally review laptops under around $1,000 is because they often lack some of the fundamentals of a laptop" Uh gotta disagree with you there bud, I know quite a few sub-$1000 that are of much higher quality and/or equal the G3 in performance! And what does that mean, anyway? What are the "true fundamentals" of a laptop? It can open? Doesn't crack in half? Specify, please
@InfinityLabsTech
@InfinityLabsTech 4 жыл бұрын
I've reviewed a few and have given very positive reviews to some which is why I said generally. The HP Pavilion 15t was exceptionally good for $800 and exceeded many of my expectations. Weaknesses include dim displays, keyboards with shallow key travel and lack of tactile feedback which impacts speed and accuracy, rough and inaccurate trackpads for ultrabooks that are geared for portability. In this case, there are an unusually high number of comments saying their hinges broke after a few months, something I was concerned about but didn't expect to actually be a known design flaw. The reason I call them fundamentals is because you can't reasonably expect the majority of people to hook up external monitors and keyboards to their laptops. That would severely hinder the portability aspect which is the sole reason for buying a laptop. A mouse is fine, it's small and easy to carry, and required for most games. If I have trouble seeing what's on my screen because of how dim it is, that's not acceptable at any price. It would hinder my productivity too much. That's also why I said value is the cheapest option that meets all the fundamentals. When I review laptops, I often compare it against the very best that I've seen. If something is a reasonable compromise for the price or for its intended market, I'll specify. Saying everything is good "for the price" doesn't help anyone. Measuring everything objectively against the very best gives people a much better idea of exactly what they're buying and whether those compromises, if any, are enough to be a dealbreaker.

@@InfinityLabsTech can you help me? I have a Dell G3 3590 with a very similar configuration (it`s nearly the same except it has 24Gb RAM and 525Gb SSD). You`ve mentioned in the video that it is tend to be warm during running games. Could you recommend any kind of cooler pad which is worth to use it with? Secondly, for my previous laptop (Lenovo Ideapad Y510p) I have a vacuum cooler alongside with. One of my colleagues (whom I do not really respect as a computer pro) said it can ruin my notebook`s inside cooler fans. It has a potmeter where you can adjust the power of the vacuum cooler`s fans, but there`s no way to measure the speed of it of course, moreover, there`s no way to determine the speed of the coolers inside the notebook. Therefore he said that if the vacuum cooler`s fans are faster than the coolers inside the notebook, it can ruin the thole of the coolers inside the laptop. What do you say, is it true or it is just a fantasy of his simple mind? And what do you think, is it worth to keep this vacuum cooler alongside with Dell G3? Because in case of the Ideapad Y510p there were blow-holes on the side of the notebook where you can easily fit the vacuum cooler, but in case of Dell G3 it`s not so simple because as far as I see it has a blow-hole right below the hinge and in my view it couldn`t be simple to fit the vacuum cooler there because of the hinge itself....or what is your recommendation at all, what is the best cooler to use alongside with Dell G3 3590? I'm gonna assume you're the artist for that wallpaper, in which case I'd be happy to change the link in the description to your website if available. I can't do reviews without going off a script, otherwise I go on tangents. A script helps me stay concise and I won't be as likely to forget to mention something. Reading off a script on camera is more work than filming an extra minute of footage to compensate because I need to keep eye focus on the camera which means I need to remember paragraphs at a time, and I imagine it takes a bit of practice to look natural on camera. I'll probably have to do it a few times before doing A-roll in a video I'm uploading. Also because of privacy to a certain extent, but I've done a face reveal before. Just don't really wanna be bothered in public.
@DevonConnelly

Infinity Labs no I’m definitely not the artist, I’ve just used it in my reviews before. I totally understand your thinking with A-ROLL because it’s something I struggle with. I enjoy your videos a lot and it would just be nice to know who’s doing the review. Keep up the awesome work.
@InfinityLabsTech
@InfinityLabsTech 4 жыл бұрын
Over the past few months I've considered doing A roll for just the opening and closing parts, that way it would only be like a minute of total A roll. The thing is there's no benefit to doing face cam, it doesn't attract viewers. But if people dont like my appearance, then that could make some people avoid my videos. I imagine the percentage of those people is very low, but that was another consideration I made years ago back in mid 2016 on a different channel. Glad you like my videos. I think a lot of creators doubt themselves and will often criticize their own work harshly, even though most people still enjoy it and couldn't care less about the minute details. Kinda nice to get positive feedback every once in a while, particularly those that are a bit longer like yours.

I likely won't make a video because my channel was built on reviews. It wouldn't do well in terms of views. But to answer your question, I have four 1500-nit 5000K LED light bulbs in the ceiling, and two cheap Neewer softboxes off Amazon for $50 pointed at the wall behind the laptop. That's how I light everything consistently without harsh spots. I'm using a Sony A6300 with white balance leaning blue and tint leaning pink. I don't actually white balance properly, it's a look I personally prefer. I don't color correct, it's all done in camera because I'm lazy. Just light everything consistently and the camera will always look good. Here's the page I showed in the video, currently sold out though: www.lenovo.com/us/en/outletus/laptops/lenovo-legion/legion-y700-series/Lenovo-Legion-Y740-15/p/81HE0000US

This laptop seems great. The only bad thing is the screen and the fact its not a Ryzen CPU. Also the reason why the USB-C with DP port is only available on the Nvidia 1650 and better laptops is because the Display Port is a part of the graphics card and therefore connected directly to the graphics card instead of the intergraded GPU like the HDMI and internal display. Also do you mind booting the latest versions of Ubuntu and Manjaro and just letting me know if it boots and if the WiFi works in a live environment. If you can it would be a huge help.

If the G3 is "too cheap" (it, too, often goes on sale), Dell offers the G5 which is basically the first-gen G7 chassis with improved specs, and the G7, and both offer more premium specs. I picked up my 2018 G7 15 7588, back when it was released, for around $1,000, and being subscribed to PC World's deal finder emails I regularly see it and the G3, and G5 discounted significantly. The comparison between a G3 and Helios 300 is an odd one, as the G3 simply isn't designed to compete with the Helios 300.
@InfinityLabsTech
@InfinityLabsTech 4 жыл бұрын
I compared it because the non-sale price of my unit was something like $1160 if I remember correctly. That's essentially in line with the Helios 300's $1200 MSRP. Dell might not have intended for it to compete with the Helios 300, but at the budget end, price is all that matters and the Helios offers better value. In other words, people are more willing to accept a laptop that is geared for a different market as long as its pros and cons align with their use case. Contrast that to me recommending a $3000 gaming laptop with a 4K color accurate display for a content creator. It's viable, but not ideal. For example, the XPS 15 and 16" MacBook Pro offer 8 and 10 hours of battery life each. Most high end gaming laptops reach 6 hours.

Wanted to share my PC stats because it cost me $20 more brand new (last year) with a little bit better specs: ASUS ROG Strix GL531GU I5-9300H, x4 Core, 8GB Ram/DC GTX-1660 TI (Full Graphics Card) 1920 x 1080 120hz 512GB NVMe Samsung M.2 All ports listed + Type-C (No thunderbolt), but can be used for charging and display port. All Plastic except for copper ventilation coils...thermals are great. BTW: Display port capabilities for Type-C is usually, only available for GTX 1650 and above because the newer models of VR are being connected via DP now and VR ready is having at least, GTX 1650 or above.

If you are on market for laptop- gaming but not really for school or you have dont need carry one arround pls consider building a pc, for $960 you can get a really decent build that you can just upgrade later on. I am not a fan of laptop tbh! I would get one if its for school though. (Forget every thing I said if you do not have space for pc etc but I think its a good investment)
