Would you rather go for the G3 or a 1-2 generation old flagship gaming laptop? Does the newer CPU/GPU outweigh the other improvements? Intel stuff has been running the same architecture for years now so it seems like an easy decision
@Bartmelo4 жыл бұрын
For the gamer out there I think it depends on the GPU side. Remember the jump from the 9XX GTX series to the 10XX GTX Series? That was massive. In that kind of context I believe the GPU outweights the other improvements and this kind of budget laptops make sense.

2 gen old GPU is horrifically bad compared to Turing. I used a G3 last year for a while, and it was "okay", but I bought the laptop I'm using right now for $999 at Microcenter and it is a much better laptop IMO. I paid that for a Maingear Vector, which uses an aluminum & carbon chassis, and has a i7-9750H, 16 GB DDR4, GTX 1660 TI, 512 GBNVME M.2 SSD, and a 144 Hz 1080P display made by LG. It might not be the very best display out there, but it's much nicer than most in the $1,000 range. It's also a matte display which is fairly uncommon. Not only is the display much better on the Vector, I felt the chassis was of much higher quality, much faster CPU, and the 1660 TI in the Vector is NOT max-Q so it's a much more powerful GPU as well. To compare screens, my Vector's screen is 298 nits, 876:1 contrast, average delta 2.59, max delta 4.33, 95.3% sRGB, 61.1% AdobeRGB. So worse contrast than the G3, but better everywhere else. The real problem is also that 1660 TI Max-Q is much slower than 1660 TI. 1660 TI Max-Q is about on par with 1060, non max-q 1660 TI's like the one in my laptop get about 20% more fps in games.

1:20 - Here's the advice which is very important to prevent hinge accident. When opening and/or closing the laptop, I use 2 index/thumb fingers from both hands, one is opening or closing the laptop exactly right in the middle edge only (never use left or right corners more importantly) and one is holding the laptop exactly right in the middle edge as well.

I've had my G3 for about 7 months and use it daily. It hasn't let me down in anything performance-wise. But the hinge on this model is almost guaranteed to break eventually as mine has just recently. There is also a seemingly rare issue with multiple key inputs resulting in a "stuck" key input state. I haven't found any solution to this as it is not a key mechanically malfunctioning, but something on the software side. This leads to some frustrating moments when playing games as your character will continue to take an action until you tap the key again.

@eddihaskell4 жыл бұрын
@@underTheStormIt depends on whether or not you are traveling with this laptop, surge protection, and how often and with what care you are opening the hinge. FYI, I purchase many electronic items, and I have had only 2 items "fry" on me (for lack of a better term). Both happened about 12 years ago. The first was a motherboard on a 55 inch Sony LED television when they were very expensive a few days out of a two year warranty. The second was a motherboard of a 17 inch HP Pavilion laptop i purchased on Ebay used 4 months after the sale. Both items ended up being worthless and too expensive to repair. I am not purchasing an extended warranty on the Dell beyond the one year warranty that it came with because I am not planning on traveling much with the laptop, the credit card I used offers an additional 1 year extension beyond the purchase price, and technology improves such that in two years time what costs $700 now should cost 70% of the price due to improvements in processing power. But if anything is going to break it will be the motherboard IMHP- that is if you not drop it or spill a drink on it. The only other item that "fried" on me was a Gateway desktop that literally was too close to a lightning strike that took out an entire wall outlet (and the surge protector) around 4 years ago here in Florida -- it was unavoidable and covered by a Square Trade Policy. I was lucky not to have been sitting in the same room, but Florida is one of the lightning capitals of the world.

I will say the hinge design and keyboard are a flaw but that price point is unbeatable for those specs right now, and I use an external mechanical keyboard+mouse anyway. Thanks for the great review! "A big reason for why I don't generally review laptops under around $1,000 is because they often lack some of the fundamentals of a laptop" Uh gotta disagree with you there bud, I know quite a few sub-$1000 that are of much higher quality and/or equal the G3 in performance! And what does that mean, anyway? What are the "true fundamentals" of a laptop? It can open? Doesn't crack in half? Specify, please
@InfinityLabsTech4 жыл бұрын
I've reviewed a few and have given very positive reviews to some which is why I said generally. The HP Pavilion 15t was exceptionally good for $800 and exceeded many of my expectations. Weaknesses include dim displays, keyboards with shallow key travel and lack of tactile feedback which impacts speed and accuracy, rough and inaccurate trackpads for ultrabooks that are geared for portability. In this case, there are an unusually high number of comments saying their hinges broke after a few months, something I was concerned about but didn't expect to actually be a known design flaw. The reason I call them fundamentals is because you can't reasonably expect the majority of people to hook up external monitors and keyboards to their laptops. That would severely hinder the portability aspect which is the sole reason for buying a laptop. A mouse is fine, it's small and easy to carry, and required for most games. If I have trouble seeing what's on my screen because of how dim it is, that's not acceptable at any price. It would hinder my productivity too much. That's also why I said value is the cheapest option that meets all the fundamentals. When I review laptops, I often compare it against the very best that I've seen. If something is a reasonable compromise for the price or for its intended market, I'll specify. Saying everything is good "for the price" doesn't help anyone. Measuring everything objectively against the very best gives people a much better idea of exactly what they're buying and whether those compromises, if any, are enough to be a dealbreaker.

That wallpaper Looks familiar 🤓 also random question which you might have addressed in the past but how come you don’t talk in front of the camera? Great job as always. 👍🏽
@InfinityLabsTech4 жыл бұрын
I'm gonna assume you're the artist for that wallpaper, in which case I'd be happy to change the link in the description to your website if available. I can't do reviews without going off a script, otherwise I go on tangents. A script helps me stay concise and I won't be as likely to forget to mention something. Reading off a script on camera is more work than filming an extra minute of footage to compensate because I need to keep eye focus on the camera which means I need to remember paragraphs at a time, and I imagine it takes a bit of practice to look natural on camera. I'll probably have to do it a few times before doing A-roll in a video I'm uploading. Also because of privacy to a certain extent, but I've done a face reveal before. Just don't really wanna be bothered in public.
@DevonConnelly4 жыл бұрын
Infinity Labs no I’m definitely not the artist, I’ve just used it in my reviews before. I totally understand your thinking with A-ROLL because it’s something I struggle with. I enjoy your videos a lot and it would just be nice to know who’s doing the review. Keep up the awesome work.
@InfinityLabsTech4 жыл бұрын
Over the past few months I've considered doing A roll for just the opening and closing parts, that way it would only be like a minute of total A roll. The thing is there's no benefit to doing face cam, it doesn't attract viewers. But if people dont like my appearance, then that could make some people avoid my videos. I imagine the percentage of those people is very low, but that was another consideration I made years ago back in mid 2016 on a different channel. Glad you like my videos. I think a lot of creators doubt themselves and will often criticize their own work harshly, even though most people still enjoy it and couldn't care less about the minute details. Kinda nice to get positive feedback every once in a while, particularly those that are a bit longer like yours.

This laptop seems great. The only bad thing is the screen and the fact its not a Ryzen CPU. Also the reason why the USB-C with DP port is only available on the Nvidia 1650 and better laptops is because the Display Port is a part of the graphics card and therefore connected directly to the graphics card instead of the intergraded GPU like the HDMI and internal display. Also do you mind booting the latest versions of Ubuntu and Manjaro and just letting me know if it boots and if the WiFi works in a live environment. If you can it would be a huge help.

@jauffins4 жыл бұрын
If the G3 is "too cheap" (it, too, often goes on sale), Dell offers the G5 which is basically the first-gen G7 chassis with improved specs, and the G7, and both offer more premium specs. I picked up my 2018 G7 15 7588, back when it was released, for around $1,000, and being subscribed to PC World's deal finder emails I regularly see it and the G3, and G5 discounted significantly. The comparison between a G3 and Helios 300 is an odd one, as the G3 simply isn't designed to compete with the Helios 300.
@InfinityLabsTech4 жыл бұрын
I compared it because the non-sale price of my unit was something like $1160 if I remember correctly. That's essentially in line with the Helios 300's $1200 MSRP. Dell might not have intended for it to compete with the Helios 300, but at the budget end, price is all that matters and the Helios offers better value. In other words, people are more willing to accept a laptop that is geared for a different market as long as its pros and cons align with their use case. Contrast that to me recommending a $3000 gaming laptop with a 4K color accurate display for a content creator. It's viable, but not ideal. For example, the XPS 15 and 16" MacBook Pro offer 8 and 10 hours of battery life each. Most high end gaming laptops reach 6 hours.

Actually there are 3 display options : this one and another 60HZ one but much brighter at 300nits and have better accuracy and there is a 144Hz one
@jdspetersgaming4 жыл бұрын
i think he misspoke, but both options cover less than 60% sRGB... so it's still a cheap looking screen. bad for editing and enjoying media.

It depend on how much money you want to spend in, their differences aren't quite big and isn't something that you can't change in the future y'know, anyway I would suggest the first one.

@darkendrandomvids4 жыл бұрын
@@alpdesis805 well it depends what you like, for me it's plenty, but the fps dropping is a little bit annoying yet you get used to it. (I come from an Xbox on a really crappy monitor so this was an upgrade for me to 60hz) Yeah, there are a few fps drops but like I said, you get used to it

I get 144hz locked with my bottleneck being the cpu. This laptop has pretty aggressive pl1 throttling so cpu drops down to about 3.2 Ghz. But I got lucky with -160mV undervolt. I was able to get -185 but I guess motherboard cannot handle it and I was getting blue screen errors.

I not yet use alianware or VR headset. All the option is there. I not really push the machine. I do not regret my choice.
