I was wondering about what people thought of the backlit keys during the day, and my assumption is right in line with yours. It essentially sucks during the day because of the keys being silver. A quick note: Dell's website is now selling this laptop with the 11th gen CPU, MX350, QHD+ (2560x1600) screen, 3200MHz RAM, and Thunderbolt 4 port. Interesting the screen size has been reduced to just 17.0" down from 17.3".

I have this laptop with the 32GB optane. Note, the laptop is 17 inch instead of 17.3", but now the ratio is 16:10 instead of 16:9 like standard laptops. So the screen is taller instead of wider, if you can understand what I mean. The 16:10 ratio is perfect if you are reviewing documents side by side. Also the weight is 4.9 lbs. Doesn't feel that heavy at all. The 2560×1600 screen resolution is definitely an improvement.

Nice review and i also have a question. How stable is the aluminium case? The top of the keyboard flexes when you press it with your finger? Thank you for your answer.

The keyboard seems rock solid, no flexing once a keypress bottoms out. When opened, you can twist the case about 4~5mm and the lid about 3mm. When closed twisting seems impossible because both structures are aligned with the beefy hinge mechanism.

Excellent review, I have had mine for about almost nine months and totally love it. I have a 1786 also and it has black keys and thus the back light is a bit better than the 1791. I keep it attached to the D-6000 hub and run a big screen 4k tv as an external monitor so my gpu gets a bit more of a work out. This machine is really quiet compared to my 1786 and thus I use it more. Rarely get to use the touch screen and tablet mode, but it is nice knowing they are there.

Great video! I just ordered an Inspiron 17 7000 2-in-1 (7706) with some upgrades from this review for $881. Slight bad news is that with the upgraded processor, delivery will take 6 weeks. Interpreting tech specs is a foreign language to me, but the 7000 seems an equivalent laptop to the highly reviewed XPS 17 - equal weight and processor, higher screen resolution, but smaller battery - for $350 lower price.

I'm loving this laptop more more as the weeks go by. It's all about the screen! I order hundreds of systems from Dell throughout the year and 19 out of 20 times they deliver much earlier than their estimated delivery date. If probably ordered 2000 systems over the last 10 years and they've all arrived by the estimated date or before. There was one exception and it just happened two months ago. I ordered a T440 with very unusual options, like casters to roll it around the floor easily. That system took two months. They had given me estimated delivery dates and had to push back on those dates thrice. The final date was given, but at that point it actually showed up 10 days early. I think the delay was simply the whole COVID-19 China parts delay scenario.

If you get tired of waiting I'd recommend keeping an eye on the Outlet for the same or better laptop for possibly better pricing. Also note that the inventory on the Outlet changes hourly, so checking it 3 to 5 times a day can reveal different systems and pricing. I'll make a separate comment explaining the procedure.

I made a mistake. I don't think they're selling this model anymore. I got mine today, it was on the dell website as the Inspiron 17 7000 2-in-1. It doesn't have the bezel below the screen with the dell logo like yours does. It's a 16:10 resolution! I bought this to replace another 17 inch laptop and never suspected that non-16:9 laptops existed. So even though it's "17 inches", anything I watch, including your video, is shrunken down with half-inch black bars on the top and bottom. I feel like I got played. I had been researching the 17-7000 for a while but it was no longer available on dell's website, so when I saw it pop up again I bought it. My model number is 7706

Guys, this laptop can be had on the Dell Outlet. If you are not familiar, I'll explain the short of getting there. www.dell.com/outlet Hover over Products, then Laptops & Tablets, then Inspiron Laptops Then drop-down options, select Screen Resolution, 17" Drop-down option, Touch Screen, Touch Drop-down option, Screen Resolution, 1920x1080 The above should get you down to a handful of candidates. I couple of secrets based on my experience of buying hundreds of systems. The concept of refurbished is not necessarily that the laptop was used & and abused then sent back to Dell for "refurbishing". I find most of the systems are simply cancelled orders that never left the Dell shipping dept. This is true for "Certified Refurbished" systems. If you find "Scratch & Dent" then it's a crap shoot, that it might have a few faint marks, even less likely it'll have a few scratches, and three times in 10 years I actually got dents. And ultimately, if you just regret what you got, you can return it. Regardless of condition, it's sold to you like new with Dell warranty, so there is no risk. When you get your handful of candidates, read very very carefully each component. Simply viewing so many options and so many systems will get you dizzy and you might home in on your pick and order it, only to realize you mistakenly ordered the system without the touch screen or without the Optane memory. Make sure to review Screen Resolution, graphics card, is it new, certified, or scratched, is it the 2-in-1 folding style or a normal hinged laptop, etc. Also, if you want WIndows 10 Pro, and not Home, realize if you are getting great pricing, you can always do an in-place upgrade from Home to Pro for $99. The default warranty is 1yr. Once added to your cart, you can optionally purchase extended warranties, the price may be better than $50/yr which was the price a few months ago for doing a 1yr bump. There have been weeks that you can't find any of these laptops available on the Outlet, so be patient, again, inventory can change rapidly, but if there is high demand by the business community then the Dell sales reps are reserving all the stock and they won't show up here.

Why is it written inspiron 17 7000 on your keyboard instead of 7791 ?

Good Question. The first number represents the screen size. So you could purchase a 17-3000 or a 15-7000. Screen sizes are 11, 13 14, 15, and 17. Series are 3000, 5000, 7000. Not all combinations can be had, for example there is no such laptop as an 11-7000. The series (3000, 5000, 7000) represent various options that you could puchase. For example if you wanted a backlit keyboard or touch screen they're not available in the 3000 series. Want a 4K screen, only in the 7000 series. So what does my "7791" represent? The first digit 7 is the premium model, 2nd digit 7 is the screen size, third digit 9 is the cpu generation, and fourth digit "1" represents the device type "2-in-1" compared with "0" which would mean classic laptop style.

Not sure. I have a Surface Pro 3 with a pen and never used it. On my Galaxy Note 10, I use the pen frequently, but that's just for handwriting.

I got this laptop from BestBuy in Feb 2020, i hardly used it for 2 months, then started getting blue Screens, now the authorised service center says after diagnosis, that motherboard is defective and has to be replaced.. Waiting to ship to US and get the motherboard replaced. My experience with this laptop was just awful.. And I hv not seen a worst ever customer service such as dell.. I regret buying this one

Those diagnostics that Dell has perfected over the decades have been invaluable for saving time and determining if an OS reload is necessary or hardware replacement. It's save me hours of troubleshooting. It's definitely a bummer to have a new product lay down on you. Over the last decade I've purchased $15M worth of Dell products and there is a certain percentage, probably around 1%, that have issues. Probably any company's products are the same. Laptops are probably the most intricate of all computers. And I will say of all the totally awesome protection of foam within the shipping boxes, the laptops are my least favorite, making them more susceptible to damage. Their desktops and servers are the most robust. The mail in warranty is kindof a bummer. The extra hassle and the extra waiting time. I've been spoiled with the servers and business class PC's and laptops where parts are overnighted and a technician shows up to swap it out. This laptop falls into Dells category of home products, so that means the default warranty is a 1 year mail in warranty. You can bump up the warranty to next business day on-site as an option. Also note for overseas, if you purchase from the USA and them move overseas you can transfer your warranty to the overseas database to it can be serviced locally. Note that you must call Dell support to confirm the exact country and city if this option is available. Also note, the warranty must be NBD (next business day) Premium Plus. This is the top of the line warranty. Normally this is a business offering, but for the home products, they can be optionally upgraded to the premium plus. I'm not sure about this, but I think if on-site service is not offered for a specific city, that you would still get the benefit of mail-in service at the closest service center nearest to your overseas location. Also, there is a time frame for the transfer to occur. So if you are traveling overseas for a month or less, probably pointless to do this transfer. You can always call in to support to have them clarify your exact scenario. It took me several weeks of reading and calling in to fully understand how it all plays out.

Thanks for the reply.. The customer care here in india told me that this laptop is not yet launched here and warranty transfer can't be done. So all the services done here was paid by me.. Of course the Customer service is not up to the mark..i requested them to consider this pandemic and hv the motherboard replaced here in india itself but they upfront rejected it. And this laptop is just sleeping inside a bag useless.. 😭 This laptop is kinda expensive and didn't serve the purpose at all. And at the time of purchase BestBuy told me it has international warranty. But after bringing it to India I found that this has only US warranty. I called the CC several times and requested, yelled, pleaded, argued, but nothing worked out. The dell tech team first trouble shooted and told me it's OS issue and so I reinstalled OS. I got again blue Screens, then the Authorised service center told me it's RAM issue and removed a RAM, and told me to try, again got blue screens in few days, then finally they said it's a motherboard issue and has to be replaced. 😒 And a quick que to you if you can answer.. Will this graphic card support softwares like adobe premiere pro or any heavy video editing softwares.. Need your advice here. Thanks again for your reply

The numpad keys look a little skinny, do you have trouble typing on them?

I really don't love just about all laptop keyboards. A laptop that has a numeric keypad is a huge plus over one that doesn't. I find no problem using it, certainly not as fast as a PC keyboard. The bigger problem, as with most laptops, is the arrows, home, del, end, pgup, pgdn keys. 2nd runner up is the size of the print on the function keys. There also needs to be a gap between F4/F5 and F8/F9 as on PC's to help locate without needing to see that micro-print!
