i recently bought one of these for my little brother for $35 and upgraded it to 16gb ram for about 16 bucks and bought a cheap 10 dollar ssd for boot drive and put 2 500gb laptop hdd for storage and games and got a 25 dollar 4gb r7 450 and it runs sons of the forest even

16gb maximum ram is quite weak.I have an older Optiplex 7010 that supports 32gb.

It's a pretty common thing with the 3010, 3020 and now obviously the 3040. I believe that the Oddly enough it seems the comparable 6th gen optiplex that competes with the 7010, 7020, 9010 and the 9020 is now under the 5040 naming scheme going up the generations with increments to the 50(xx) and so on. Anyhow, those all seem to have at least the 32gb limit you mentioned, though they are significantly more expensive.

If you go for a 3050 & stick an M.2 drive in there rather than a 2.5" SSD (making sure you load the latest BIOS, Chipset drivers and Intel Rapid Storage drivers) then you'll have a super PC for many years use.

@@abnermc8689 Afraid not. If the mainboard has an M.2 slot it can only be used for the optional WiFi card. Not all mainboards for the 3040 have the M.2 WiFi slot either. The Optiplex 5040 SFF does support an M.2 drive though so that's the one to go for if you want to add an M.2 drive.

Yes, you can buy another one (or a 2.5" SSD). I'd stick in some more memory too if needed (8GB min) and then install Windows 10.
