Dell Optiplex 760. Can $20 bring this 10 year old computer to 2019?

In this video we take a 10 year Dell Optiplex 760 and try to give it a second chance. We clean it up and add an SSD to see if this computer can run in 2019.

It's an old video, I know, but the point you make is still valid. Back in 2015 I bought a refrubished Thinkcentre M58p tower with an E8400 along with a refurb Dell monitor for a reasonable price with a full year warranty (which I never needed, luckily) and it's been my 'daily driver' ever since. Popped in a budget SSD, it boots Linux Mint to fully usable in about half a minute and shuts down in about 3 seconds :D For basic office work, browsing the web (plays back youtube 720p no problem) etc it is still perfectly usable even in 2022. Keep up the good work! I've recently discovered your channel and really like your videos.

No gaming (I'm Old) You tube , Facebook , Movies etc ..is all I use it for .. Replaced the fried power supply 6 months ago with a 400 watt one ..I like this big Case for working in .. Put in new memory 8 gigs.. From 4 gigs didn't notice any difference .. specs show this is a E5300 processor running at 2.59 ghz .. I watch this thru the TV Vizio with a VGA output Input ... I have no complaints but wonder what I could do to Improve? it .. Thanks .. Gonna watch a bunch of your videos and see if I can learn enough to get in trouble ...🙂

​@@liberalforfreedom from what I have read you can, some say its an easy plug and play and some say a bios update is required... I have only ran the q9600 in this model, I have a 780 that i ran a q9650 with no issues but not sure if the mobo was the same. Yea you would need a video card for it. something like a gt 1030 would work well as that what i used on these models. Just read your a retired mechanic!! Awesome I do mechanic work in my spare time and has a second channel where I do mechanic work and small engine repairs. (DLMGarage).

They are still pretty decent for office and media pc's. You can do some light gaming on this but the core 2 duo limits the types of games you can play. I did a 780 build on this channel and that one you can max out the cpu and def get some good gaming going with it. What specs you got on your 760? Thanks for watching!

Just a heads up, that key would have worked with the SSD and a fresh install of Windows 10. It's worth saving the COA sticker and putting it with the machine or even saving for another build if not needed on this system

The onboard video card uses the system ram to run the graphics. If you run a graphics card then you will get the whole 6gb of ram without sharing it with the video. Hope this helps. Thanks for watching and subscribe to help the channel grow.

As a office PC you can def sell them and make about a $80-$100 profit. It is only worth selling if you don't have much invested into it. I sold it for $100 and got the computer for free due to someone throwing it out. I put a $20 SSD and made a $80 profit. It also depends on the market in your area. My area everyone is always looking for a cheap office PC so they are really easy to flip and find for free.

@@josiahsaji I would do a fresh install wiht a windows 10 bootable usb and yes you should have the license with the new install. Its keyed to the system, you would loose it if you changed the board.

@@josiahsaji its automatically linked to the board so it will do it automatically and you should not have to worry about entering it in. If you want the number then search a few searches and their are ways to get the number. I dont know how off the top of my head.

Excuse my noob question but, can I put in the 1tb hard drive from my old alienware into this computer? Already has windows 10 on it, or does windows need to be wiped from hard drive first then installed into this computer?

you can, going from an older to a newer intel should be fine and the drivers should install and update automatically. you might get flagged for the CD key so make sure you have it ready for activation. when you change boards it asks for the key typically. I would pop it in and go for it.

before replacing, make sure all dust is clear from the vents, replace the thermal past and clean the fan and ensure it is spinning. if that does not work then the best thing to do is just replace the fan which you can buy and regular one and get a fan dell 5 pin adaptor from amazon and that will fix the issue. hope this help and subscribe to help the channel! i used rufus to make the boot usb and had it to mbr bios or uefi setting in it. make sure your using the latest version

@@DLMtechgarage got it to work using a usb 2.0 stick i tried to use usb 3.0 xbox ssd and it wasnt giving it enough power I think with 2.0 port? up and running now typing on the 755 its just for a family friend.

Maybe a noob question, but my optiplex 760 shows peak usage of the cpu around 90% when opening pages browsing and a constant 65-80% RAM usage. Would adding RAM to my pc make a difference in speed or none at all in my case?

The memory would def help with it. If you have the ddr 3 version then 8gb would be ideal as I believe it maxed out at it. The other is that cpu is a bit weak and under powered. Might have to max out the cpu specs on that model if you plan on using this PC longer. The cpus for it are pretty cheap on ebay

@@asfaltweg Might be very late but indeed a Q9400 would make it more than usable on the web and even 1080p youtube videos without a dedicated GPU . I serviced the SFF version of this computer that had 8GB RAM and a Q9400 and it runs the latest version of Win 10 with no issues still

This is good computer but Windows is buggy on older hardware. Also, there is no support from manufactures for such old hardware. No driver updates for windows. No microcode updates for all OS. On linux you have open source driver that is contributed by intel and others so you will receive support after EOF from vendor.

it def is, i use the default windows drivers, def not a gaming pc but in the past I have sold them for cheap office internet pc's. I stopped going this route and only pick up the sff and turn them in to retro gaming pc's for customers.

honestly without being bottlelekneck and getting a good bank for the buck, i would go with a 750ti LP, they need no extra power and work great with this setup. A 1050ti LP is another good option but you will der be bottleknecked by this cpu and with the gpu not working to full potential you def not getting your monies worth. This card would work good in that computer. I used it in a optiplex 780 and it was decent. Another option would be a 1050ti or even a 1650. for the processor the best thing to do is max it out but you need to find out which motherboard you have. either the T674K Non-Quad core CPU motherboard U562N Quad core CPU motherboard check the service tag number and dells website and it will tell you.

depending on the specs you get with it yes. I know sims 4 and roblox would run fine, minecraft may struggle but should play it. if you can get the higher variant of these, then all you would need is a video card and you would have a decent computer for those games.

not sure if it will support the 1650 due some older bios issue. it may or may not but you can max the ram to 8gb and def use that ssd.

@@ricardofreire311 hard to say with this CPU. its gonna be a major bottle neck, if anything I would just try to get a better cpu and board all together, but if your on a budget get an old 750ti used for cheap and see if that can hold up with what your trying to do. I would not break the bank on this cpu

I tried swapping out the HDD for a HDD I used in a HP Beats laptop but I get a black screen when I try to boot it up. Is this because of the Dell proprietary BS and it being a HDD that came out of a HP? Its worth noting that I'm not a computer pro by no means. Lol

no, with dell you can use any drive you want, you might have an issue with the UEFI boot, since it came from a newer laptop, you would have to format and install a fresh copy of windows, Can you get into the bios with the dirve?

I do have a USB to SATA cable if hooking up the new one with the original drive would make a difference. I want to use both HDD if possible. One for Boot and the other for storage. Is that possible?

@@RebelBreed888 that is weird that the laptop drive would do that never had that issue. I would try the laptop drive by itself and see if that works, if not then maybe its a propietary issue but I have not ran into that. best bet my be using that usb to sata and use the laptop drive that way.

This computer likely first came out in 2008, not 10 or 11 or 12. They are gigantic pieces of crap and if you aren't getting paid to take it off someone's hands, you are paying too much. Have worked with way too many.

yea their nothing special but at the time during the pandemic and increase online learning, I had a bunch of these lying around and was giving them to people who needed a computer. would def not pay for it but def something to give to someone to hold them until they cant something decent.

depends on which Pentium cpu you have and which model optiplex. If its the 760 Pentium then it will run but don't expect much. That cpu is barely scrapping by to run it.

The SSD will be the key for it to run smooth.

depends on the type of 3d game. Older games from that era to include some lower spec modern 3d games like fall guys and roblocks would probably work ok but newer stuff def won't hold up. Def consider a SSD and a better graphics card and it should get you a better playing experience. Hope this helps and thanks for watching!

yes you can. Just get on amazon and get a usb bluetooth adaptor. Their small and work great. I typically get those for customers who want to use an xbox controller for their computers. below is a link to one i typically use.
